ACC regents unanimously approved a new Associate in Applied Science Degree in Pediatric Echocardiography during a regular meeting on Nov. 18. The ACC Diagnostic Cardiovascular Sonography Department introduced training for an advanced technical certificate in the field in 2007. The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education will release new pediatric echocardiography accreditation standards in the next year or two and the DCVS department would like to have an associate degree option available when the standards are implemented. With equipment, supplies, clinical sites and faculty already in place, there would be no additional cost to the college for implementing the new degree plan.

Allied Health Programs Hold Intraprofessional Drill
Students from Different Fields Work Together in ER, ICU | To give students enrolled in the Emergency Medical Technology (EMT), Associate Degree Nursing (ADN), Respiratory Care and Diagnostic Cardiovascular Sonography programs at ACC another tool to gain real world experience and be able to have a positive transition into their careers, faculty held an intraprofessional training drill on Nov. 19. The drill consisted of two sessions and involved volunteers, simulating various traumas, illnesses and emergency conditions, placed throughout the campus. The first stage involved EMT students arriving by ambulance to the scenes to assess and stabilize the patients for transfer. The patients were then transported to the training emergency room of the ACC Science/Health Science Building where nursing and respiratory care students were waiting to assist. EMT students were required to provide vital information to the nursing students and help in the bed transfer. Nursing students were then required to work with respiratory care students to meet the patient's needs. ACC instructors served as doctors for each situation. Following the drills, ACC ADN instructor Susan Priest held a debriefing session to give participating students another opportunity to learn more from each other and provide feedback to staff to plan for future training drills. |

ACC Hosts Food, Toy Drive to Help Area Families
By Coach Gary Coffman | For approximately 25 years, ACC, ACC Student Activities, and the ACC Church of Christ Student Fellowship have been sponsoring "ACC CAN Feed the Hungry" to help provide sacks of food just before Christmas for families who have unfortunate circumstances. Over the years, this service has grown tremendously and last December we helped around 50 families in the ACC service area. This year, the food distribution and the Breakfast with Santa will take place on Saturday, Dec. 11 from 9 to 11 a.m. The ACC Student Activities sponsors a toy drive, "Toys Thru Us," in conjunction with this service project, so during the breakfast toys are given by Santa and his helpers to the children of the families in need. Last year, Alvin Elementary joined in this service project by combining the Shellie Garza Memorial Food Drive with ACC CAN Feed the Hungry for the food distribution on the day of the Breakfast with Santa. This year, Alvin Primary and Alvin Junior High will join in the Shellie Garza Memorial Food Drive as this wonderful project continues to grow.
Non-perishable food items can be dropped off at the ACC main campus through Dec. 11. Collection baskets are located in most of the buildings. New toys can be dropped off at boxes throughout the campuses and in Building E through Dec. 9. A collection box for toys will also be located at Hometown Bank of Alvin. You can also help support the event by eating at Chili's on Dec. 7 and providing them with a flyer that you can get from me. Chili's will donate 10% of the sales on those evenings to the food drive. All help will be appreciated. For more information, call (281) 756-3693. |
