Regents Pass Budget, Reduce Tax Rate 
Board Reduces Tax Rate for Seventh Consecutive Year
ACC regents approved the revised annual M&O Budget for the 2009-2010 fiscal year and reduced the total effective tax rate for the seventh consecutive year during a regular meeting on Aug. 27.
 
The revised budget of $23,612,999 represents an approximately 2.08 percent increase over last year. The tax rate was lowered from .199832 to .199830 per $100 valuation. The lower rate includes the debt service for the new Science/Health Science Building.
 
Blind Student Receives HCB Scholarship 
Research Leads to 'Eye-opening' Findings
eddie dixThe Houston Council of the Blind awarded ACC psychology major Eddie Dix (right photo, center) a $500 scholarship at its annual scholarship luncheon on Aug. 15. For the past year, Eddie, who has been blind from diabetes since 2001, has been conducting research projects to help bring awareness regarding the capabilities and needs of blind people. He has a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and is working toward becoming a counselor.  
 
 
Ebert Brings New Vision to ACC CE Programs 
Alternative Medicine Program to Offer Unique Training
massageAs a doctor of chiropractic and certified acupuncturist, using non-chemical and non-evasive methods to help improve people's health is Stacy Ebert's passion. Desiring to share and inspire others with that passion, she was recently appointed as the new director of the Alternative Medicine and Massage Therapy Program at ACC.
 
Although ACC has been training students for careers in massage therapy since 1994, the evolution of the program toward offering different forms of alternative medicine training is new. Examples of courses that are being considered for the future include: traditional Chinese medicine, holistic healthcare consultant, and personal trainer. ADN Program Reaches Record Enrollment 
Nursing Program Opens to 85 Students This Semester
adn eventWith 85 new students enrolled this fall semester, the ACC Associate Degree Nursing program has reached its largest class in history. ACC ADN students and Alvin Nursing Student Association (ANSA) officers (right photo, left to right) Clayton Collins, Caryn Wilson, Tiffany Poling and Shelly Scott are shown answering questions from new students during an orientation event on Aug. 21. The orientation is held each year to help provide information and resources to help ensure success. 
Congrady Honored with Resolution 
ACC Board, College Express Appreciation
cleoIn appreciation of her commitment and dedication to the community and public education, ACC President Dr. Rodney Allbright (right photo, left) presented a resolution to Cleo Congrady on Aug. 25. The ACC Board of Regents unanimously approved the resolution honoring Congrady during a recent board meeting.
 
Ms. Congrady served in public education for nearly 40 years, including 21 years as a faculty member for the English Department at ACC. She has served as president of the Alvin Museum Society for many years and was instrumental in the development and creation of the Alvin Museum Society and the city's historical museum on Sealy Street and Marguerite Rogers House Museum on Dumble. 
ACC Honors Allbright for 40 Years of Service 
Service Awards Presented to Numerous Employees at Workshop
dr. a swordACC President Dr. Rodney Allbright (right) was honored for his 40 years of service during the annual ACC Fall Professional Development Workshop on Aug. 19. Dr. Allbright served as an instructor for 7 years before being appointed the youngest U. S. community college president in 1976. An avid movie fan, he was given a replica of the sword of Aragorn from Lord of the Rings. He was presented the sword by ACC Board of Regents Chair L. H. "Pete" Nash.
 
Numerous employees were honored for their 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 years of service at the event as well.

ACC Partners with UH-CL for Reverse Transfer 
Agreement Helps More Students Earn Associate Degrees
uhcl agreementACC entered into an articulation agreement with University of Houston-Clear Lake to allow reverse transfer credits during a regular board meeting on Aug. 27. Through the reverse transfer program, ACC students who go on to UH-Clear Lake before completing an associate degree will be able to transfer coursework from UH-Clear Lake to ACC to be used as requirements toward a two-year degree.
 
Main Campus Theatre to Open for Fall Play 
Actors to Perform "Lend Me a Tenor" in Remodeled Venue
 
theatre 8-26After a year of closure for reconstruction and remodeling, the ACC Theatre at the main campus will be open for the fall play in October. Celebrate the opening of the theatre and come out to enjoy the Drama Department's "Lend Me a Tenor" Oct. 10-11 and Oct. 15-17.

Volunteers Needed for Ultrasound Scans 
Students Benefit from Practicing on New Volunteers
Monitor your health and help ACC students at the same time. The Diagnostic Cardiovascular Sonography program at ACC is in need of child and adult volunteers for scanning labs for the fall semester. Students perform scans of the heart and blood vessels. The scans are totally painless and non-invasive. To make an appointment, call (281) 756-5625 or e-mail sbutler@alvincollege.edu. Scans begin Sept. 8.
Faculty, Staff Learn How to Better Serve Veterans 
Dr. Lanier Provides Information, Advice at Workshop
dr. lanierDr. Stacey Lanier (right), a staff psychologist for a veterans' trauma recovery program and instructor at Baylor College of Medicine, provided information and advice to ACC faculty and staff on how to serve and assist veterans who attend college after serving in the military during the annual Fall Professional Development Workshop on Aug. 19. The workshop is sponsored each year by the ACC Faculty and Staff Development Committee to help employees grow personally and professionally in order to provide the best quality services, instruction and programs to students and the community.
ACC to Participate in Danbury ISD Grant
Program to Focus on Math Skills in High School Students
To help improve college readiness for high school students, the Danbury Independent School District recently received a $15,000 Greenhouse Grant from the College Board to implement an innovative program focused on math skills. The program will include a math course taught collaboratively between an ACC and Danbury High School instructor. The focus of the first semester will be THEA and college algebra preparation using a college algebra textbook and curriculum. The second semester will utilize an online college algebra course offered by ACC and jointly delivered by the DHS and ACC math teacher.
 
Students who successfully complete the second semester will receive college credit for college algebra in addition to gaining high school credit.

Upward Bound Students Win for Fifth Year in a Row 
Students Win Overall at Regional Competition
ACC Upward Bound students earned their fifth straight overall first place win over other area UB programs during an annual competition held in Galveston recently. The students placed: first in Ready Writing, Algebra II and Pre-Calculus; second in Ready Writing, Algebra I and Geometry, Spelling, PowerPoint, Persuasive Speech, College Bowl and Talent Show; and third in Ready Writing, Algebra I and Geometry, and Power Point. 
 
ACC implemented the year-round Upward Bound program in 2003 to give Alvin High School students who have academic potential the chance to succeed, but lack various resources and skills needed to achieve their goals.

Sustainable Energy, Green Careers Training Offered 
Partnership with ed2go, Gatlin Brings Online Courses
Through a partnership with ed2go and Gatlin Education, the ACC Continuing Education Workforce Development Department will offer new online training programs for sustainable energy and green careers. Training will be available for the following fields: Senior Certified Sustainability Professional, Certified Green Supply Chain Professional, Certified Indoor Air Quality Manager, Certified Indoor Environmentalist, Building Analyst Quick Start: BPI BA Certification, Wind Energy Apprentice, Biofuel Production Operations, and Natural Gas Operations. Motorcycle Safety Course is Back! 
Course Offered for New, Experienced Riders
In addition to satisfying new state requirements for new motorcycle rider licensure, the motorcycle safety course at ACC can help new riders gain knowledge and confidence and experienced riders address bad habits and increase proficiency. This once popular course at the college has been brought back thanks to community and DPS suport.
 
The two-day class, which is offered regularly, includes approximately 5 hours of classroom instruction and 10 hours of actual riding experience on the training course at the main campus. Motorcycles are included. The cost is $195. To register, call (281) 756-3787. 
New Locker Room Created to Help Baseball Players 
New Facility Donated by Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan
new locker roomEnhanced safety, privacy, tremendous time savings and better performance are just a few of the benefits ACC Dolphins Baseball Head Coach Bryan Alexander is expecting the new locker room on Phillips Field to provide his team next season.
 
Construction for the locker room, which was made possible by a donation from Baseball Hall of Famer and long-time ACC supporter Nolan Ryan, was completed this spring and the team has been working to equip it throughout the summer. Much of the equipment was also donated.

ACC Fine Arts Gallery Hosts First Show of Semester 
Exhibit to Feature Artwork of Alumnus Frank Medel
The ACC Fine Arts Gallery will feature the artwork of Frank Medel through Sept. 24. The show will display mask sculptures. An artist's reception will be held Sept. 2, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Instructor Places Eighth at Senior Olympics 
Dr. Child Ranks in First National Competition
childsACC Health and Human Performance instructor Dr. Don Childs (right) placed eighth in the nation for racquetball at the Senior Olympics in Sunnyvale, Calif. recently. This was the first time he has competed at the national level for the sport. He has participated in numerous regional and state competitions. He competed in the 65-69 age category.
