College Welcomes New Student Ambassadors
New Program Aimed to Promote Student Recruitment, Involvement |
To promote involvement and enthusiasm for higher education opportunities and possibilities, 10 ACC students will serve as ambassadors throughout the fall semester. The new Ambassador Program at ACC, sponsored by the ACC Foundation, will feature the students at events throughout the community. The ambassadors will also perform many duties, such as call prospective students, provide campus tours, serve as new student orientation guides, greet state officials, assist campus recruiter at functions, and much more.

Regents Provide Direction on Proposed Budget
Board Waiting on BCAD for Effective Tax Rate |
The ACC Board of Regents provided direction to administrators to complete the 2009-2010 Maintenance and Operations Budget at a regular meeting immediately following a budget workshop on July 23. The proposed 2009-2010 budget of $23,930,941 represents a 3.45 percent increase over last year and will include funds for two new instructors, to address the growth in dual credit courses at local high schools, a salary step adjustment for eligible employees and a two percent salary adjustment only for approximately 76 full-time employees who have no more step increase options due to their long length of employment and qualifications.

Texas Radio Hall of Fame to Induct Forsythe
Ceremony Scheduled for Nov. 8 |
Cathy Forsythe, who served as the Broadcast Communications Department chair at ACC for nearly 30 years, will be inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame posthumously during a ceremony on Nov. 8. Cathy made a tremendous impact on the Houston radio and television broadcast industries and many of her former students work at nearly every radio and television station in southeast Texas.
Some of Cathy's former students include: Tom Fontaine of KILT 100.3; Wendy Miller, formerly of KIOL; Fox Sports Net anchor Kevin Eschenfelder; David Trumbull, a former student from the early 1980s who has spent over 20 years in radio and television at stations like KRBE, KGOL, KILT, KTMD (Telemundo) and KPRC Channel 2; and many others. As a radio broadcaster for numerous stations, such as KTRH 740 AM, KILT 100 FM, KRBE 104 FM and several others, and voice talent for video, commercial and other productions, Cathy was also a professional and used her experience to help ACC students reach their goals. Cathy passed away after battling cancer for 5 years in October 2007.

ACC Law Enforcement Staff Receives TASER Training Certification
Officers Desiring Certification Can Now Train at Main Campus |
To provide another valuable service to the law enforcement community, ACC Criminal Justice Department Chair Maurice Cook and Law Enforcement Training Coordinators Jeff Gambrell and Ronny Phillips became certified TASER instructors recently. As part of the certification process, the three men completed online and classroom instruction and practical training at the main campus on July 20. Although not required, Maurice (a retired Texas Ranger), Jeff and Ronny agreed to be "tasered" at the completion of the course.
As TASER instructors for the M26 and X26 models, they will be able to train officers desiring certification to carry the device. Due to its reputation and indoor firearms range, the ACC Law Enforcement Academy serves as a training location for many local, state and federal law enforcement agencies. Dean Experiences Military Leadership Training
Ft. Knox Course Provides Insight into ROTC Program |
 To be able to provide ACC students an inside view of military life, ACC Dean of Students JoAn Anderson attended a U. S. Army ROTC (Reserve Officers' Training Corp) Leaders Training Course in Ft. Knox, Ky. July 8-11. As part of the course, she received instruction in rappelling, rock climbing, combat water survival, leadership development, teamwork and various ROTC training practices.
Since partnering with the U. S. Army and U. S. Air Force ROTC programs at the University of Houston in 2007, ACC has been able to help students interested in a military career or gaining leadership skills reach their goals. For more information about the ROTC programs at ACC, call (281) 756-3531. |
Klentzman's Work Earns National Recognition
Publication Wins Rachel Maynard Award |
Wendy Klentzman, a senior administrative assistant for the Assistant to the President at ACC, was recognized for her role as editor of the TESA Connection at the National Association of Educational Office Professionals national convention in Bloomington, Minn. July 20-25.
The TESA Connection won first place and received the Rachel Maynard Award for Excellence in Communication. The TESA Connection is a magazine published by the Texas Educational Support Staff Association (TESA) four times each year. Wendy served as its editor last year and was recently sworn in as president-elect of the organization. TESA is "the only professional association for educational support personnel" in the state.

Wheeler, Garrett Retire from ACC

ACC Math and Science Division Chair Dr. Steve Wheeler (right photo) recently announced his retirement after 37 years. Dr. Wheeler, who began at ACC in August 1972, has been chair of the department since 2001. ACC instructor Dwight Rhodes was selected to be the new chair of the division.
Faculty member Lew Garrett retired from ACC after 30 years of service in July. Lew was responsible for many ACC programs offered at Texas Department of Criminal Justice prison units for offenders earning a certificate and/or degree. |
KACC 89.7 FM Offers Live Performances On-air

To give listeners a unique opportunity to hear live music on the radio, KACC 89.7 FM began broadcasting the live performances of Texas bands in 2007. To date, KACC Live has featured such artists as Ruby James, The El Orbits, Sonny Boy Terry, B. B. Aeroplane, Romeo Dogs, The Texas City Revelators, The Fondue Monks, Blowtorch Repair, Orange Is In, Sisters Morales, The Mighty Orq and more. KACC's most recent guest was The Brad Absher Band (right photo) on July 23.

 Over 220 new students attended ACC's new student orientation on July 30. In addition to learning about the services, programs, organizations and activities offered at the college, participants toured the campus and attended workshops. Reconstruction Project Making Big Changes at ACC
Buildings E, H Now Under Construction |
The final touches (furniture, decor, etc.) are currently being made to the counseling offices and library in Building A. The library will feature a student lounge and new seating areas surrounding a center island of book shelves.
In Building E (Student Center), students will be able to enjoy the new office of Student Activities, an expanded College Store, and new study area once the work is complete. Building H will eventually house part of the Continuing Education Workforce Development Department. Drywall is currently being placed over the old brick walls of the 40-plus year old building.
