The ESC provides a wide range of services, including registration, admissions, financial aid, course additions and withdrawals, data requests and changes, transcript requests, graduation applications, Business Office transactions and more, to credit and continuing education students in one location. It is located at the entrance of the college in Building A.

Students Can Now Accomplish Numerous Tasks in One Location
Taking advantage of the substantial damage caused by Hurricane Ike in September 2008, ACC used the opportunity to renovate the affected buildings with students in mind. The new Enrollment Services Center provides a wide range of services, including registration, admissions, financial aid, course additions and withdrawals, data requests and changes, transcript requests, graduation applications, Business Office transactions and more, to credit and continuing education students in one location!
 
Regents Introduce Proposed 2009-2010 Budget 
Congrady Honored with Resolution for Service
The ACC Board of Regents introduced the 2009-2010 proposed budget during a regular meeting on June 25. At a total of $23,930,941, this year's proposed budget represents a 3.45 percent increase over last year. For years, administrators, faculty and staff have been instructed by the board to develop an annual budget that does not increase more than 4 percent than the budget before. A budget workshop has tentatively been scheduled for later in July.  
 
During the meeting, board members also unanimously approved a resolution expressing appreciation to Cleo Congrady for her commitment to the community and public education. Ms. Congrady served in public education for nearly 40 years, including 21 years as a faculty member for the English Department at ACC. She has served as president of the Alvin Museum Society for many years and was instrumental in the development and creation of the city's historical museum on Sealy Street.

ACC Partners with Brazosport College for Bachelor's Degree Program 
Agreement Allows Seemless Transition
 
brazosportTo give students another option for earning a bachelor's degree, ACC signed an articulation agreement with Brazosport College during a ceremony on June 11. The agreement allows ACC students to transfer up to 75 college-level credit hours toward a Bachelor of Applied Technology (BAT) degree in Industrial Management at Brazosport College.
 
 
City Hosts Fourth of July Event 
Community Band to Perform at ACC Prior to Fireworks
fireworksThe Alvin Parks and Recreation Department will host its annual Fourth of July fireworks display adjacent to ACC on Saturday, July 4.
 
The Alvin Community Band will perform from 7:30 p.m. until dusk (approximately 9 p.m.) in front of the flag poles of the ACC main campus. Fireworks will immediately follow. For more information, call (281) 388-4299.
ACC Makes First-time Registration Easy with 'Super Saturday' Event on July 18 
New Students Can Complete All Steps for Admission in a Day
To make registering at ACC easy for first-time students, Advising Services will host its fourth annual "Super Saturday" event on July 18. New students will be able to complete all steps for admissions in one day, including: submitting an admissions application, placement testing, meeting an advisor and registering for fall 2009 classes.
 
Placement testing, which is normally $39, will be offered free of charge for students planning to attend ACC. Testing space is limited, so make your reservations early. Registration opens on July 1. ACC Summer Children's Theatre Presents 'In One Basket' in Pearland 
Performances Held July 27-30
The Alvin Community College Speech and Drama Department will present the second show of the Summer Children's Theatre Festival season, "In One Basket" by Shirley Pugh, July 27-30 at the ACC Pearland Center Theatre. Performance times are at 10 a.m. July 27-30 with a second performance on July 30 at 7:30 p.m. For more information or to reserve tickets, call the ACC Theatre Box Office at (281) 756-3606.
Symposium Addresses Texas Workforce Training 
Speakers Talk of Trends, Education's Role
symWorkforce training needs of industries continuously evolve. Those needs are impacted by numerous factors, such as changing technology, sociological and economic regional, state, country and global influences, demographics and much more.
 
Speakers at the Inaugural Horizon Technologies Summer Symposium on June 4 at the ACC Pearland Center addressed current and future workforce training needs in Texas and how higher education can meet those needs.

Studio Jeweler Offers Classes at ACC 
Falkenhagen Brings Extensive Experience to Classroom 
jewelyTo help artists -- or aspiring artists -- learn how to make jewelry, 30-year studio jeweler and new ACC instructor Diane Falkenhagen will offer introductory and advanced courses at ACC this fall.
 
Her work has appeared in The New York Times, American Craft, Metalsmith, Southwest Art, Ornament magazine and several books, including some from the popular Lark Books series, 500 Brooches and 500 Necklaces
 
 
ACC Students Help with Digital Switch at KPRC 
Digital Transition Offers Opportunity to Gain Experience
The switch from analog to digital signals for the television industry in June was a historic event -- and eight ACC students were part of it.
 
ACC students who manned the Channel 2 DTV Phone Bank from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. included: Katie Briza, Marcus Cook, Amanda Culver, Juan Guerra, Gina Keel, Joel Moreland, Elias Thompson, and Isaac Trevino. The digital transition, which was approved by the U. S. government several years ago to "free up space for emergency services" and upgrade technology throughout the nation, required people with older televisions to purchase newer sets capable of processing digital signals or acquire converter boxes.
 
 
New Student Orientation Slated for July 30 
'Road to College Success' Gives Important Tips
ACC will host its annual new student orientation, "The Road to College Success," on July 30, from 8:30 a.m. to noon in the ACC gym. Speakers will provide tips and advice for making the most of college, advisors will be available and tours of the campus will be given. This event fulfills requirements for mandatory orientation for first-time students. For more information, contact ACC Advising Services at (281) 756-3531.
 
Art Department Offers Studio Classes for Kids  
Children Ages 8-14 Can Learn Numerous Art Skills
studioThrough the ACC Art Department, kids ages 8-14 can learn skills in printmaking, photography, pottery or painting with art studio classes offered July 20-23. The weeklong session, Monday through Thursday from 1 to 4 p.m., costs only $85 per child and supplies are included. Class size is limited and registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Spanish Classes Offered for Adults, Kids in Shadow Creek Ranch 
CE Starts New Foreign Language Program
The ACC Continuing Education Workforce Development Department will offer new enrichment classes for adults and kids in Conversational Spanish beginning in September at Mary Burks Marek Elementary in Shadow Creek Ranch.
 
More classes are being planned throughout the area and in French, Hindi and Mandarin Chinese. To learn more, call (281) 756-3787. 
Kids' College Sessions Offered in July, August 
Numerous Fun, Exciting and Educational Classes Available
csiIn July, Kids' College will be held at the ACC main campus July 13-16 and at the Pearland Center July 20-23. Classes will be offered at Mary Burks Marek Elementary Aug. 3-6.
 
Registration is held at the new Enrollment Services Center in Building A, Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Deadline to register for each session is four working days prior to the first day of the session. Registration must be done in person.
 
The cost per child is $95 per session and T-shirts can be purchased for $10 each while supplies last. Students will wear a name tag and be escorted to and from classes. For more information, call ACC Special Events Coordinator Rhonda Myers at (281) 756-3729 or rmyers@alvincollege.edu.
Governor Appoints ACC Instructor to Council 
Gutheinz Will Service Until 2015
gutACC Criminal Justice Department instructor Joseph Gutheinz was recently apppointed to the Council on Sex Offender Treatment by Texas Governor Rick Perry. According to the governor's office, the "council develops and implements education policy concerning effective interventions and managmeent of sex offenders."
 
Gutheinz is retired from the NASA Office of the Inspector General as a senior special agent. He is also an attorney and certified fraud examiner.

Youth Attend 'Dare to Dream' at ACC 
Nearly 300 At-risk Students Learn About Career, Education Opportunities
dreamNearly 300 youth, ages 14 to 24, participating in the Summer Jobs for Youth program and Brazoria County Communities in Schools attended "Dare to Dream College and Career Day" at ACC on June 25.
 
The students toured the main campus and experienced demonstrations by departments involving radio/television, criminal justice, court reporting, nursing, process technology, emergency medical technology and more. In addition, the students got to tour a LifeFlight helicopter that landed next to the new Science/Health Science Building and watched the Alvin Fire Department perform a "jaws of life" demonstration.
PTech Department Hosts Open House 
Guests Learn About Opportunities for Careers, Education
ptTo give people an opportunity to learn about careers in processing industries, the ACC Process Technology Department hosted the fourth annual Process Technology Open House on June 9. The event was sponsored by a grant from the Shell Oil Company. Representatives from Shell were present and ACC faculty and staff provided information about educational opportunities to prepare for such careers. ACC was the first community college in Texas to offer the process technician curriculum.
 
The El Orbits to Perform on KACC 89.7 FM July 2 
KACC Live to Feature Well-known Houston Band
The El Orbits, considered "one of Houston's most fun and best variety bands," will perform live on KACC 89.7 FM on July 2 at noon. The band highlights swing and "mellow lounge" tunes from artists such as Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, Herb Alpert, Dean Martin, Tony Bennett and many, many more.
 
The event is part of the KACC Live series, which brings in bands to play in the radio station's own studio. KACC is an educational laboratory for the communications students of ACC.
 
 
Smiley Becomes Youngest ACC Graduate 
17-year-old Earns Second Degree in May
 
smileyIn May, when most 17-year-olds were looking forward to ending their junior year or graduating from high school, Marshall Smiley was graduating with his second associate degree from college.
 
Homeschooled by his mother from the beginning, Marshall became ACC's youngest graduate, with a degree in Radio Broadcast Communications, 10 days after his 17th birthday in December. In May, he earned his second associate degree in general studies at ACC and has been a student at Houston Baptist University since January.
