Hundreds Graduate from ACC in May 
Over 580 Students Receive Degrees, Certificates This Year
The commencement ceremonies in May are highlights for everyone at ACC. It's the time when students, faculty and staff see the rewards of hard work. This year, over 580 students received degrees and certificates.
 
Among these were three high school students (Kyle Gaddy, Shauna Humbird and Suzanna Sanchez) who received an associate degree and the college's youngest graduate Marshall Smiley who received a degree at the age of 17 in December.   
 
In addition, over 60 people earned a GED during the academic year, including a mother and her son (Debbie and Steven Barlow). Congratulations new ACC graduates!
Regents Approve Agreement with BCHD 
ACC to Serve as Emergency Medication Distribution Point
ACC regents approved an interlocal agreement with the Brazoria County Health Department to serve as a distribution center for medication in the event of a public health emergency during a regular meeting on May 28.
 
In related matters, board members also approved a mutual aid agreement with the City of Alvin Police Department. The agreement provides for "mutual aid and protection of life and property in the event of high risk and critical incidents of criminal and non-criminal nature."
 
During the meeting, the board selected regent 'Bel Sanchez to serve as an ex officio board member of the Northern Brazoria County Education Alliance contingent on requested information on service areas from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. The NBCEA offered an invitation for the position to ACC, as well as San Jacinto College, in a letter from Chairman Mike O'Day in May.

Allbright Speaks at PISD Meeting 
Discusses Partnerships, Services, Amenities for Pearland
pisdACC President Dr. Rodney Allbright addressed Pearland Independent School District trustees during a regular meeting on May 26 regarding various partnerships, services and amenities available through the college to benefit Pearland students.
 
The presentation was made in response to an initiative led by the Northern Brazoria County Education Alliance to encourage Texas legislators to change state law to allow the San Jacinto College District to share a service area with ACC.

Rep. Weber Honored as 'Distinguished Alumni' 
Allbright Presents Honor at Commencement Ceremony
weberDistrict 29 Texas Representative and ACC graduate Randy Weber was honored as a "Distinguished Alumni" by ACC President Dr. Rodney Allbright during the college's commencement ceremony on May 12.
 
The Distinguished Alumni Award is presented to a graduate who has excelled in his or her profession, demonstrated a history of commitment to education and ACC, displayed genuine compassion and integrity toward others, and made significant contributions to the community through service.

Symposium Focuses on Future of Texas's Workforce Development 
Guest Speakers to Discuss Needs, Actions at All-day Event
brazellAs Texas faces rapidly evolving technology, expanding global markets and fiscal challenges, workforce development must rapidly evolve as well if businesses, organizations and governmental entities are to prosper and maintain an edge in the services and products they provide.
 
To address these issues, Texas State Technical College, in partnership with ACC, will host the Inaugural Horizon Technologies Summer Symposium on June 4 at the Pearland Center. Shown (right) is guest speaker Jim Brazell.

ACC Hosts Process Tech Open House 
Learn About Career, Educational Opportunities
To give people an opportunity to learn about well-paying careers in the processing industries, ACC will host the fourth Annual Process Technology Open House on June 9, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the new Science/Health Science Building. 
 
The event is sponsored by a grant from the Shell Oil Company. Representatives from Shell will discuss the various aspects and benefits of working in this field. ACC faculty and staff will be present to provide information about educational opportunities to prepare for such careers at the event, as well.

Softball Skills Camp Set for June 22-25 
Event Open to Girls Ages 7 to 14
skillsThe ACC Athletic Department will host its 10th Annual All-Skills Softball Camp June 22-25 from 9 a.m. to noon. Basic softball skills, including catching, hitting, throwing, base running, stealing and sliding, will be covered.
 
The camp, which will be held at the ACC Ruth Ryan Softball Field, is designed for girls ages 7 to 14 of all skill levels. The cost is $65 and a T-shirt will be provided. Summer Job Program Available for County Youth 
Program Targeted for Ages 14 to 24
Designed for individuals between the ages of 14 to 24 from low-income families, a Summer Jobs for Youth Program is available for residents of Brazoria County from June 8 through early August. Participants who qualify will have the opportunity to earn money, receive job skills training, attend personal development workshops and work with a mentor to help ensure success throughout the program.

ACC Gives Offenders a Chance for Success 
Over 40 TDCJ Inmates Graduate from ACC this Year
Over 40 men incarcerated in Texas Department of Criminal Justice prisons were awarded associate degrees from ACC during a commencement ceremony at the Stringfellow Unit in Rosharon on May 18. In order to earn a degree while in prison, students must meet the same entrance and degree requirements and attend night classes.
 
ACC was the first community college in Texas to offer higher education opportunities to TDCJ inmates in 1965.

89.7 KACC Debuts New Morning Show 
Students Tackle Morning Drive Radio Slot
Two of the most familiar voices of the Gulf Coast Rocker 89.7 FM KACC are combining forces this summer on a new morning show called "The Morning Drive with Joseph and Paula." The show debuted Monday, May 25.
 
The show combines the entertainment styles of Joseph Lopez with the professional delivery of longtime air personality Paula Guidry. The show will air Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m.
 
Joseph and Paula are ACC students pursuing degrees in the Broadcast Communications Department.  
New Studio Art Classes Available for Kids 
Kids Ages 8 to 14 Can Learn Various Skills During the Summer
Kids will have the opportunity to participate in summer art studio workshops during sessions held June 22-25 and July 20-23. Kids can choose to learn skills in printmaking, photography, pottery or painting. Each four-day session will be held Monday through Thursday, 1 to 4 p.m. The cost is $85 per child and supplies are included. Class size is limited and registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration will be held June 1-4 from 9 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. in the new Art Building. Art Department Hosts Enrichment Workshop Studios for Experienced, New Artists 
Artists Benefit with Use of Professional Studios
Experienced and new artists can have the opportunity to utilize art studios and learn about ceramics, sculpting, jewelry making, printmaking and painting with enrichment workshops at ACC June 9 thorugh Aug. 13. ACC Counselor Sworn in as New City Councilmember in Alvin 
Cross Wins May 9 Election
 
crossACC ADA Counselor Eileen Cross was sworn in as a new Alvin city councilmember during a meeting on May 21. Eileen won an election on May 9 against two other candidates.
 
As the ADA counselor, she does everything in her power to help students with disabilities succeed at the college, including acquisitioning new equipment, talking with instructors and parents and making sure the campus is ADA compliant. Cross has been employed at ACC since 1983.
ACC Makes First-time Registration Easy with 'Super Saturday' Event on July 18 
New Students Can Complete All Steps for Admission in a Day
To make registering at ACC easy for first-time students, Advising Services will host its fourth annual "Super Saturday" event on July 18. New students will be able to complete all steps for admissions in one day, including: submitting an admissions application, placement testing, meeting an advisor and registering for fall 2009 classes.
 
Placement testing, which is normally $39, will be offered free of charge for students planning to attend ACC. Testing space is limited, so make your reservations early. Registration opens on July 1. Go to www.alvincollege.edu and click on "Super Saturday" to make a reservation or call (281) 756-3531 and mention "Super Saturday."
New Dental Assistant Program Available at ACC 
Orientation Events Offered on June 9 and June 11
Learn about the new dental assistant program at ACC, including prerequisites, externships and financing options, during an orientation event at the Nolan Ryan Center in Alvin on June 9 or at the ACC Pearland Center on June 11. Both events will be held 7 to 9 p.m. and guests will also be able to meet instructors.

ACC Summer Children's Theatre Presents 'Charlotte's Web' in Pearland 
Performances Held June 22-25
The Alvin Community College Speech and Drama Department will present the first show of the Summer Children's Theatre Festival season, "Charlotte's Web" by Joseph Robinette, June 22-25 at the ACC Pearland Center Theatre. City Hosts Fourth of July Event 
Community Band to Perform at ACC Prior to Fireworks
fireworksThe Alvin Parks and Recreation Department will host its annual Fourth of July fireworks display adjacent to ACC on Saturday, July 4.
 
The Alvin Community Band will perform from 7:30 p.m. until dusk (approximately 9 p.m.) in front of the flag poles of the ACC main campus. Fireworks will immediately follow. For more information, call (281) 388-4299.
Project Controls Training at ACC Begins in June 
Partnership with TTMC Offers New Classes
Due to a partnership with The Turnaround Management Company (TTMC), ACC will offer a new Project Controls Program that covers training for planning, scheduling, and cost engineering in June.
 
TTMC will be using the "refining industry as the backdrop for teaching the disciplines of project controls as they relate to turnaround, maintenance and capital projects." The courses that will be offered are The Fundamentals of Turnaround Management, Fundamentals of Cost Engineering and Basic Primavera.

escAs part of the renovation project from Hurricane Ike, the entrance to Building A is being converted to the new Enrollment Services Center (ESC) which will provide a wide range of services to credit and continuing education students in one convenient location. Shown (right) is the progress as of May 28. 
ACC Team Participating in Relay for Life 
Donations Being Accepted for Cancer Research
A team from ACC will be participating in this year's Relay for Life on June 12 at Manvel High School. The event lasts from 6 p.m. until the next morning at 6 a.m. If  you would like to join ACC's support and fundraising efforts, visit ACC's station at Relay for Life or contact Lynn Johnson or Claudia Pouncey at (281) 756-3644. The team's theme for the event is "ACC Rocking for a Cure."
