ACC Board Voices Concerns of Shared Service Area with Texas Sen. Jackson, Rep. Weber
Regents Express Desire to Consider Partnership With San Jacinto Without Wasting Tax Dollars
jacksonThe ACC Board of Regents voiced concerns and opposition of a shared service area with San Jacinto College District to Texas Senator Mike Jackson and Representative Randy Weber during a special meeting on March 27.

Sen. Jackson filed a bill (Senate Bill 1857) on March 11 requesting that the Pearland Independent School District be allowed service from San Jacinto College, as well as ACC. According to ACC Presidnet Dr. Rodney Allbright, service areas were created by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and added to the state's Education Code by the legislature in 1995 to prevent duplicated expenditures of local and state tax funds. There are currently no shared service areas in Texas.

Regents told Sen. Jackson and Rep. Weber of their desire to provide the best education opportunities for students and ability to do this through partnerships, even with San Jacinto College if it was beneficial for students. Board member Mike Pyburn said creating a shared service area "just doesn't make sense" since everything can be accomplished with interlocal agreements without wasting tax dollars.

ACC Students, Alumni, Employees Help Make Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Great
Their Work Literally Touches Millions of People

rodeoThe Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (HLSR) is the "world's largest livestock exhibition and world's richest regular-season rodeo" - and ACC students, alumni and employees play their part to help make it happen every year. This year, ACC's impact was literally seen by millions of people who attended the rodeo in person and watched it on various television venues.

This was the first year that the HLSR provided internship opportunities for ACC students exclusively to provide video footage throughout the show and produce a video series aimed at young people that was broadcasted throughout the rodeo grounds. Fourteen students participated in the video internship program and gained valuable experience. ACC students involved in radio broadcasting with KACC were involved in other aspects of the rodeo, as well.

As one of the professional cameramen working in Reliant Stadium during the rodeo, ACC alumnus and ACC Broadcast Communications instructor Jason Nichols took footage that was seen by millions. This was Jason's 10th year working for HLSR.

This is the seventh year that ACC Court Reporting graduate Kimberly Haley has been providing closed captioning services inside Reliant Stadium for the rodeo performances. Although she is an official courtroom court reporter in Victoria, Kimberly said she travels to Houston each year because she enjoys providing the services for the rodeo.

ACC EMT Department Chair Douglas Stevenson serves as a paramedic for the HLSR Safety Team each year and ACC Media Technician Kyle Marasckin has volunteered for the rodeo for 15 years on the Horspitality Team.
