Students, Staff Head to Austin       
Texas Community College Day Set for Feb. 4
ACC students, along with several faculty and staff memebers, will travel to Austin to join thousands of other community college students on the steps of the capitol for Texas Community College Day on Feb. 4. The event, sponsored by the Texas Association of Community Colleges, is held each year to give community college students an opportunity to talk with state legislators and officials regarding the importance and needs of two-year institutions.

An Evening of Big Band to Raise Funds for Scholarships
Big BandDance and enjoy the exceptional music of The Kurland Street Band at the 10th Annual An Evening of Big Band on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 7 p.m., at the Nolan Ryan Center in Alvin. Tickets are $10 each and include admission to the dance and light refreshments throughout the evening. Proceeds from the event will benefit ACC Music Department and alumni scholarships. Music Student Chosen for Texas Community College All-State Band
Hrynczyszyn to Play at TMEA Convention Feb. 11-14
Amber Hrynczyszyn, an ACC music major, was chosen for the Texas Community College All-State Band recently. As part of the band, she will perform at the Texas Music Educators Association 2009 Convention in San Antonio Feb. 11-14. Hrynczyszyn, whose instructor is Pat Singletary, is a 2007 graduate of Alvin High School and plans to eventually transfer to Sam Houston State University. She auditioned against approximately 40 other community college students for the honor.
Theatre Presents 'Snoopy!!!' at Pearland Center 
Spring Musical Full of Humor, Music and Dancing
The ACC Speech and Drama Department will present its spring musical performance, "Snoopy!!!" created by Charles M. Schulz, on March 7-8 and March 12-14 in the ACC Pearland Center Theatre. Peformances on March 7, 13 and 14 will be at 8 p.m., March 8 at 2:30 p.m. and March 12 at 10 a.m. To reserve tickets, call the ACC Theatre Box Office at (281) 756-3606. ACC Alumni Make Headlines
 
Michelle Alderete - ACC graduate Michelle Alderete and ACC Speech and Drama Department Chair Dr. Jay Burton are spotlighted in a two-person photography show at the Freeman Library in Houston, located at 15515 Diana Lane. The exhibit, which is in the Conference Room, opened the first week in January and runs through the end of March. 
 
Tony Andrade - As the result of a new opportunity with Solutia, ACC Process Technology graduate Antonio Andrade became the first new hire from the company's internship program and will begin full-time in February. Tony, who just completed his third associate degree at ACC with a GPA of 3.6, worked for the U. S. Postal Service for the past 15 years.
 
Nathalie Holmes - ACC graduate Nathalie Holmes has recently joined the cast of Ester's Follies, a very popular vaudeville performance group in Austin. She is also active in commercials and independent film and is doing voice-over work.
Regents Approve Audit, Aluminum Roof for
Building E at Regular Meeting on Jan. 22 
Auditor Calls Report 'Close to Stellar'
ACC regents unanimously approved the annual independent audit by Mir, Fox & Rodriguez during a regular meeting on Jan. 22. Mir, Fox & Rodriguez principal and certified public accountant Elissa Posway called the audit "close to stellar." The audit process begins each summer and lasts several months. This year, two single audits were also required as the result of the college obtaining more than $500,000 from federal and state funding.
 
In other matters, board members voted to replace Building E's tar and gravel roof with aluminum sheeting. In December, regents approved funds for $1,195,000 to reroof Buildings A, B, C, D, E, I, which were all damaged during Hurricane Ike, and Building F. Work on Buildings A, B, C, and D has been ongoing for several weeks. Regents also denied a tax abatement request from the Economic Development Alliance of Brazoria County on behalf of Artland Louisiana, a real estate holding company for Performance Contractors, Inc.
 
During the meeting, regents also approved: adjunct faculty for spring 2009 semester; appointments of Julie Brake as the Student Activities Coordinator, Allison Tate as a counselor, and Melinda Wallace as a vocational nursing instructor; purchase of two new ultrasound systems for the DCVS program totaling $80,000; replacement of the baseball batting cages that were destroyed by a tornado during Hurricane Ike in the amount of $53,943.46; changes ot the policy manual; educational benefits for seven TSCM employees; financial report for December 2008; and the check register.
Campus Police Acquire New Patrol Car 
ACC Officers Add Dodge Charger to Fleet
New PD CarTo replace its 10-year-old, 160,000-mile Crown Victoria, the ACC Campus Police Department recently acquired a Dodge Charger - with the generous assistance of Rogers Dodge in Alvin. The new vehicle recently was retrofitted with a flat light bar, graphic vinyl detailing, a center console and radio. Once the camera and mobile data terminal are installed, the vehicle will be used for patrols, which is expected in February.
Dolphins Baseball, Softball Seasons Begin 
 
Join in the fun and support ACC students! The ACC Dolphins Baseball Team will play their first home game of the season against Navarro College on Feb. 7 at noon. The Lady Dolphins Softball Team will their first home game against Grayson College on Feb. 14 at noon and 2 p.m. For a schedule of home games, visit www.alvincollege.edu.
Free Credit Information Seminar Offered 
Learn About Credit Scores, How to Repair Them
Your credit history can impact numerous areas of your life, such as your ability to rent or purchase a home, apply for a loan, acquire utilities, buy a car and much more. It is important to understand what credit socres are, how they are caluculated, how to repair your report and various other associated topics. To help provide people with the information they need to make good decisions regarding their credit, ACC will offer a free seminar on Thursday, Feb. 19, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Registration is required for planning purposes. Learn About Careers as Voice-over Talent 
Use Your Voice as Part-time, Full-time Business
Learn how to turn your voice into a part-time or full-time business with the introductory seminar, "You're On the Air...How to Really Make It in Voice Overs," presented at the ACC Pearland Center on March 10 from 7 to 9 p.m. The cost is $45 or $50 at the door. Seating is limited to 40. The event is co-sponsored by ACC and the Friendswood Independent School District. A one-hour Webcast introducing the course will also be held on Feb. 11 at 8 p.m. for people who cannot make the live event. The cost of the Webcast is $25 per person. Healthcare Job Fair Hosted for Students, Alumni 
Meet with Potential Local Health Care Employers
ACC's 2009 Health Care Job Fair for students and alumni only will be held on Wednesday, March 11, from 1 to 3 p.m., in the Science/Health Science Building. The job fair provides the unique opportunity to meet and create contacts with healthcare professionals. Potential employers will be searching for CNAs, sonographers, RNs, LVNs, EMTs, respiratory care and polysomnography professionals. If you need help developing a resume before the event, contact Career and Job Placement Counselor Diana Stiles at (281) 756-3534.
