AMONG THE FIRST IN THE REGION TO OFFER 3D TOMOSYNTHESIS BREAST SCREENING TECHNOLOGY
Women who undergo mammograms at St. Joseph Hospital and Milford Medical Center now have the latest screening and diagnostic technology available to them.
The Breast Care Center at St. Joseph Hospital is one of the first women's centers in New Hampshire to offer 3D Mammography, also called Tomosynthesis, for breast cancer screening. Breast tomosynthesis helps radiologists see breast tissue better by decreasing the effect of overlapping areas.
Breast cancer screening with Tomosynthesis, when combined with a conventional mammogram, has a higher cancer detection rate than conventional mammography alone. Studies show that this technology improves detection of breast cancers with a significant reduction in recall rates.
During a tomosynthesis exam, multiple, low-dose images of the breast are acquired at different angles. These images are then used to produce a series of one-millimeter thick slices that can be viewed by radiologists as a 3D reconstruction of the breast.
By offering women the latest technology in mammography, St. Joseph Hospital hopes to increase the number of local women who will be routinely screened. Statistics indicate that one in eight women will develop breast cancer sometime in her lifetime. The stage at which breast cancer is detected influences a woman's chance of survival. The American Cancer Society states that if detected early, the five-year survival rate is 98%.
St. Joseph Hospital is committed to the fight against breast cancer. In offering breast tomosynthesis digital mammography, St. Joseph Hospital provides the latest in imaging quality. If you would like to schedule a mammogram or have questions about this important breast health procedure please contact the Breast Care Center at St. Joseph Hospital at 603.595.5700 ext. 2, or visit us online at www.stjosephhospital.com .
