YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

We have close to 30 students we interact with in communities throughout Sheboygan County. Don't you want to help light that spark for someone?

Words from a virtual volunteer:

Volunteering is a lifestyle choice, no matter where we happen to be. In this case, the Chicago area. Over the years, I have come to know that we are all connected, every living creature, sharing this experience we know as life. In some cultures this is reflected as Ubuntu: I am what I am because of who we all are.

Life has shared much priceless abundance in so many ways: family, wise friends, adventures, education, the most baffling sort of luck and so much more. I feel very called to serve others privately because I observe so much suffering. Also because the strongest pet peeve I have is indifference. It is important to be a part of the solution. I also know personally and professionally just how incredibly powerful mentoring is.

Horizons4Girls addresses many of the challenges my own teen daughter sometimes struggles with. As a long time former member of the Sheboygan community and parent, I feel especially called to help Horiozons4Girls to help our young women. Instead of increasing the focus on the negative perceptions of teen challenges, Horizons4Girls focuses on the positive, the promise within their students. One of their philosophies that resonates with me very strongly is:

"Each student is "at promise", not at risk... and we inspire their internal promise to fulfill their academic and personal goals."

Remote or online volunteering is a growing way to help others. It removes the roadblocks of challenging schedules, location, transportation issues and more.

So how does volunteering work from a distance? If you have a computer, a phone and internet access there are so many ways to pitch in it's tough to list them all. Here are just a few: web development, mentoring, bookkeeping, language translation, fielding calls, business plan development, marketing including social media, grant writing and so much more.

Virtually or in person, Horizons4Girls needs you because we are all in this together. No matter where we happen to be, as a community we can make a difference! Please consider volunteering by visiting the Horizons4Girls at United Way. Also visit us online to learn more about Horizons4Girls.

  The 'torch' has been passed!

Christmas 2013, Gizmo flew from Hartford CT to help us deliver cookies to Rocky Knoll Nursing Home.  And we delivered 52 dozen cookies room-to-room.  Gizmo has officially passed the torch to local celebrity Gidget and owner Barb.

You can help us make this another successful service project.

Sponsor a dozen, or two to be delivered by the girls and Gidget this Christmas.

Gizmo will be proud of how Gidget is carrying the torch forward.  Last year:

T'was two weeks before Christmas and throughout the land,
the smiles, they were missing. No smiles were at hand.

Horizons4Girls said, we must create smiles on young & old faces
With Christmas so close we need to put smiles in all the right places

The girls as they thought, they put out a call
"Gizmo, fly in and spread cheer to all!"

And it came to pass with the help of many
That smiles they were spread to all
With books at the library, sweets to elderly
Good cheer and smiles were shared with all.

As Gizmo flew home his wish could be heard,
Merry Christmas to all and to all a Good Night.

And, as always you can make a difference for one of our students!

When one links job satisfaction to financial compensation alone, they're never paid "enough." Yet, when they see "work" as a way to dance with life, meet new people, and unleash the creative tiger within, they become very rich, indeed.

Enjoy the dance!
