Greetings!

Kent District Library is honored to welcome award-winning author Jacqueline Woodson to help us wrap up KDL Reads, our community reading program centered on her book Brown Girl Dreaming.

Come hear this wonderful speaker read from her powerful coming-of-age memoir and learn how she found her voice to tell her story through beautifully rendered poems steeped in memory and rich with family ties.

Jacqueline Woodson's presentation is open to all ages and will be followed by a book sale and signing.

A Sweet Tail
A special donation came in a few weeks ago for the Ruff Readers program from Darby Trapp Eland and Bob Eland. The handwritten note attached read, "... in memory of the best dog in the world, Polo Trapp."

Polo, a Portuguese water dog with a tendency to get into mischief, trained vigilantly to become a therapy dog specializing in working with children. Upon graduation from Doggie School, his family enrolled him in the Ruff Reader Program, a special summer reading event that encouraged kids to practice reading aloud to a friendly, non-judgmental canine.

The Ruff Reader Program was an instant hit and grew into an important perennial program that builds reading confidence and improves skills in beginners.

"He would always get really excited when he got his vest on," said Sally Jo, Darby's sister-in-law and Polo's mom who laughingly recalled one of the children asking if Polo could understand Spanish.

The support of donors, like you and local businesses like Bissell, is key to KDL's engagement with the community. You fund the programs that really make a difference, like the Ruff Readers Program. For more information on how you can help grow impactful programs at KDL, volunteer or become a sustaining donor, check out our donate page for details.
