From the Director

Greetings!

It's the end of a year that for KDL meant another record-breaking Summer Reading Program and statewide, regional and national recognition for our customer service, business-mindedness and technological forward-thinking.

We are always changing as you help us understand your library needs.

We've got big plans for 2014, including being selected along with a handful of U.S. libraries to explore how we can better use new technology to attract more people by reducing the barriers to use. The coming 12 months also will bring seeds of change at many branches, and there's even something on tap for those of us who revel in our area's Beer City USA designation.

Here's hoping everyone has a great holiday,

Lance Werner, KDL Director

Understand the Affordable Care Act

stethoscope_dr_pad.jpgDue to the overwhelming response to programs offered in the fall, Priority Health and Kent District Library are teaming up again this month to present this informational program aimed at those age 64 and younger who are responsible for purchasing health benefits for their family. Topics include reasons to get health insurance, how you can get covered and when and how to enroll for coverage in the Healthcare Marketplace. Registration is not required.

Craft Away Your Winter Blues
for Teens and Adults

Oh, it's coming, friends: cabin fever brought on by cold-weather inertia-ness. Jennifer Ackerman-Haywood, crafter extraordinaire, is coming to the rescue. At select branches, she'll demonstrate a craft to make and take home, including holiday ornaments, printmaking, English paper piecing and 3D snowflakes.

Pre-registration is required and participant spots are limited. Click on the links below to find the program and location you would like to attend, or call Patron Services at 616-784-2007.

holiday-themed programs will be held:

Polar Express Party
All aboard! Hop on the Polar Express and enjoy a magical storytime train ride. Play games, make a reindeer ornament, enjoy an edible train and more at this cozy holiday party. Sponsored by Karl Orthodontics.

Gingerbread Lane
Enjoy tasty stories and make a simple gingerbread house. Oh, that we actually could caulk our windows with frosting. Pre-registration is required and participant spots are limited. Sponsored by Karl Orthodontics.

The Reindeer Are Coming!
Traveling all the way from the North Pole (via Rooftop Landing Reindeer Farms), these antlered holiday shingle-landers will be visiting the library. Dress warmly, and don't forget the camera!

Winter Blast
Cold weather-inspired fun. Crafts, snacks & more.

Mush!
Tun-Dra Kennels owners will talk about sled dogs, mushing equipment and the Iditarod. Families can meet the dogs and watch a demonstration outside, if the snow does its, um, snow thing.

Not Just Shopping - Philanthropizing*

While shopping online all year long at Amazon and Schuler Books & Music, you can make a donation to KDL without spending extra cash! The key is making KDL your starting point. Click on the image at right or this link, shop on the sites as usual and make your purchases. And BOOM -- you're a donor!

Amazon and Schuler Books will contribute a portion of their profits to KDL on any purchases you make (not just books!). The proceeds help us continue to offer the resources for loan and programs you tell us are important to you.
