From the Director:
Thrilled Just to be Nominated -- Really! Greetings!
Exciting news: KDL has been named a finalist for the Excellence in Business award from the Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce. The EPIC Awards (Entrepreneurial, Progressive, Innovative and Collaborative) recognize those who support community, demonstrate growth, show innovation and have worked as mentors and collaborators. Award recipients will be announced on Wednesday, May 15.
We're thrilled just to be nominated. Why? We're committed to making every effort to operate like a well-run business and get the greatest return on investment for our taxpayers. That the Chamber recognizes our efforts is a huge vote of confidence.
We strive to make our collection and programming valuable and relevant to your lives, have been and will continue to be dedicated to being a vital partner in the community, and, awards or not, will continue to play a significant role in lifting Kent County by making this a better place to live.
Lance Werner, KDL Director

Summer Reading @ KDL:
Programs and Prizes for Everyone!
The school year is winding down, and that means we are gearing up for Summer Reading @ KDL. With programs for kids, teens and adults, we are inviting the whole family to get Grounded in Happiness @ KDL. And if discovering some great books isn't enough of an incentive to participate, we have also got some awesome prizes up for grabs, including gift cards to nearly 20 different stores, a John Ball Zoo membership, iPads, a NOOK eReader and more!
Summer Reading @ KDL kicks off on Saturday, June 1. Stop by your local branch to sign up, and don't forget to pick up a program guide while you're there. Our summer line-up includes dinosaurs, magic, animals, food and music, just to name a few!
Dig into reading, dig into fun!

Teen Crew:
All the Cool Kids Are Doing It
Planning to spend your summer chillaxin' with your friends, interspersed with a few fun activities, some music and food? Teen Crew lets you do all that, and your parents will even like it!
Branches are now taking applications for volunteer Teen Crew members, who get to do stuff like sign kids up for -- and sometimes plan and even run -- youth and teen programs and activities. Crew members get a cool T-shirt, a pizza party at the end of the year and may earn school community service credits.
"Plus you get to hang out at the coolest place ever all summer long," said Greg Lewis, a teen parapro at the Kentwood (Richard L. Root) branch, who is pretty cool himself, for an old guy.

You Do a Good Thing; We Do Good Things
Research has shown how important it is for children to stay mentally engaged over the summer, and KDL works hard to provide programming, activities and a mountain of books, eBooks and magazines to keep minds of all ages active.
KDL offers the most popular summer reading program in Michigan, and we need your help to keep it great! Your gift ensures that we can continue providing programs and materials that make Summer Reading @ KDL a success.
