From the Director:
Kids Too Young for a Library Card? Greetings!
The findings of a recent public opinion study showed that most people in Michigan think the state should invest more in early chilhood education. Governor Rick Snyder, in his State of the State speech on January 16, called for "a major budget commitment" to early childhood education.
Literacy development begins in the first three years of life, and even babies as young as six weeks old are developmentally ready to begin early literacy activities.
Early literacy is one of the cornerstones of KDL.
A few KDL programs that target early literacy: Early Childhood Essentials programs aimed at giving parents and childcare providers tools for success, a monthly Early Lit Bits newsletter packed with practical literacy advice and Babytimes aimed at encouraging childrens' love for reading and imagination at a time when their brains experience such crucial development. And KDLville play spaces, in all our branches, do not have a minimum age restriction.
Children are never too young to get a library card!
Lance Werner, KDL Director

KDL Gives Back -- And So Can You
Did you know there are an estimated 2,900 students in Kent County who currently are experiencing homelessness?
Through February 28 all KDL branches will accept small and travel-size hygiene products that will be assembled into kits and distributed in cooperation with the Kent Intermediate School District.
This program is part of KDL's Happiness Project, an effort to promote happy, healthy, helpful habits throughout Kent County. ___________________________________________________________________ |

Calling Local Authors!
KDL is looking for local authors to sell their books and meet their fans from 9:30 AM to noon on April 27 during our inaugural Book Bash.
The event will include a giant warehouse book and media sale (more than 100,000 items), children's activities and book swap, Fill-a-Bag sale, Zumba classes, a refreshment area and more.
Space for the local author book fair will fill fast, so to be considered for the local author book sale, please send or drop off by March 1 one or two copies of the book(s) you hope to sell to Communications Assistant Morgan Jarema, KDL Service Center, 814 W.
