From the Director:
Libraries: The Gift That Keeps on Giving
Greetings!
I often have the privilege of telling the library's story, but here's one from Beth, a KDL patron, that illustrates how people see our importance to the community:
"Until my son was 18 months old, I was a very busy working mom. I saw time with him slipping away and made the difficult decision to stay home with my baby. I felt suddenly overwhelmed. How could I keep my energetic toddler entertained? What should I be teaching him? Is his development on track? Is he spending enough time with other kids?
The options for Beth and her husband were limited on a single-income budget. And then they discovered Storytime at the Walker branch.
"It's the only opportunity I have to watch his little face light up as he interacts with the same kids each week. It's the best way to learn how to teach him myself, as I often replicate activities at home. It's made me confident in my ability to be a mother to my son, and be his very first teacher. I know what to do with all those hours in our days now and we are both happier. I feel thankful for the library's programs as I watch his development unfold before my eyes. Just this week, at 23 months old, my son spelled his name for the first time and I choked up knowing that our local library helped us get here."
Beth is one of more than 25,000 parents and caregivers who bring their children to Storytime at KDL, one of dozens of programs we offer to kids every season. Your gift to the library makes that possible. Please support our community's children and their families by clicking here. We are grateful -- and so are so very many Kent County families -- for your continued support.

Buy Online, Support KDL
You're going to be doing some holiday shopping online, right? When you buy gifts online this season through select major websites, your purchases could also mean a creative, interactive storytime for your own kids and others. It could mean your branch schedules that Michigan author you've always wanted to meet, or a new program opens up for teens.
Just click on the icon at right, then use the links to continue on to Amazon.com and Schuler Books & Music's websites. By using the links on that page, a percentage of the cost of the purchases made during your shopping session will be returned to the library.
And it's not just about books, friends... For additional shopping options, check out goodsearch's GoodShop program, which includes more than 700 online stores! Just enter "Kent District Library," then use their links to your favorite online shopping sites. (Look at the left sidebar of the GoodShop site for the full list.) A percentage of your purchases will go to KDL. _____________________________________________________________ |
Ho Ho Holiday Programs @ KDL
Celebrate the season with us! This month we are offering an exciting lineup of family programs that are sure to get you in the holiday spirit.
Take a stroll down Gingerbread Lane. You'll enjoy fun stories and craft a simple gingerbread house. Also, the reindeer are returning to KDL this year. Don't forget to bring the camera to this fun opportunity to meet live reindeer.
These are just a couple of the samplings on our menu for a festive December. A complete listing of our upcoming programs, including dates, times and locations, can be found on the Events portion of our website. ______________________________________________________________ |
We Want Your Book, CD, Film
on Our Shelves
KDL has opened the door to independent creative types. Donations are now being accepted for the Local Indie @ KDL collection.
Those who donate one or, better yet, two copies of their work to KDL will see them on the shelves, ready to be checked out by the public. KDL will promote not only the collection as a whole, but tout exceptional work through staff reviews and powerful word-of-mouth recommendations from our librarians.
Interested authors, filmmakers and musicians can either pick up a copy of the submission form at one of 18 KDL branches, or download the form here. Donated materials must be accompanied by a completed submission form. The collection will initially be available at the Cascade Township and Kentwood branches, and will be unveiled in early 2013. As demand increases, other branches will be considered. ____________________________________________________________
