March is National Social Work Month

The 2017 National Association of Social Workers (NASW) theme is "Social Workers Stand Up!" Social workers stand up for millions of people every day. They stand up by comforting people who are experiencing devastating illnesses and mental health crises, to ensure that they receive the best care while on the road to recovery. They stand up and support our brave military personnel, veterans, and their families. They work in communities and with national, state, and local government to provide services and pass legislation to stand with and assist some of the most vulnerable populations.

According to the NASW, social workers are the largest group of mental health care providers in the United States, who work with individuals to overcome depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and other disorders so they can lead more fulfilling lives.

During Social Work Month, the Department of Mental Health thanks our social workers for the talent, skills and compassion that you bring to your work every day!

Metro Boston Area kicks off the 2017 Legislative Breakfast Series!

pictured left to right: Commissioner Mikula, Sen. Dorcena-Forry, Patricia Kenny, Anne Whitman, and Robert Rousseau
The 2017 Legislative Breakfast series kicked off with the Metro Boston Area event last month. Despite an unusually icy start to the morning, it was standing room only in the Great Hall of the Massachusetts State House. Anne Whitman of the Metro Boston Recovery Learning Community (RLC) joined Robert Rousseau, Metro Boston  Director of Recovery/Human Rights Coordinator, as the emcees for the breakfast. Metro Boston Area Director Patricia Kenny introduced Commissioner Joan Mikula. Commissioner Mikula addressed mental illness in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, highlighted the FYI7 budget recommendations, and introduced legislative sponsors Senator Linda Dorcena Forry and Representative Jeffrey Sanchez. The legislators also gave remarks and received awards for their commitment and support of DMH.

The heart of the breakfast is hearing the individuals with lived experience share their personal stories of recovery. Marnie Fougere pictured with Commissioner Mikula shared her journey to becoming a Certified Peer Specialist and a recovery champion for the deaf community. She has played a key role in securing funds from the Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to offer the first Certified Peer Specialist training for individuals who are deaf. Tyler Graham Jackson, a young adult, shared his story of being homeless to securing permanent housing, finding and maintaining a job, and planning his return of going back to school. Ahmad Kashefi provided his experience with the Prevention and Recovery in Early Psychosis (PREP) program of Boston. He has plans to become a Certified Peer Specialist and give back to the mental health community after completing his associates degree.

These individuals are some examples that people can and do recovery from mental illness.

Join us at one or more of the remaining breakfasts.

Women in Mental Health History

In honor of Women's History Month, we are highlighting a few women in history who through their work, advocacy, and /or their own lived experience, have impacted the way we treat and view mental illness.

During the 19th century, local Massachusetts activist Dorothea Dix observed that people with mental illnesses were caged, incarcerated without clothes in the most inhumane conditions. Dix dedicated 40 years lobbying to establish dozens of psychiatric hospitals across the United States and in Europe.

Another Massachusetts native Patricia Goldman-Rakic was a neuroscientist who was credited with having detailed the structure and function of the brain's frontal lobe. Through her work, scientists were better able to understand the neurological basis of schizophrenia and other mental illnesses. Her pioneering studies in the 1970s demonstrated that a loss of dopamine leads to severe disruptions in working memory, and laid the groundwork for understanding a range of mental illnesses and treatments for them.

Marsha M. Linehan, Ph.D. is a psychologist, author, and the creator of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). After her own personal struggles with mental illness, Linehan developed DBT as a treatment for suicidal behaviors and, later borderline personality disorder and other complex mental disorders. DBT combines behavioral science with Zen concepts like acceptance and mindfulness. The therapy model was recognized as an evidence-based practice by SAMHSA .

Mary Elen Copeland, Ph.D. is an author, educator, mental health advocate, and an individual with a lived experience who developed the evidence-based practice Wellness Action Recovery Plan (WRAP). In 1977, she began sharing WRAP with others who, like herself, are on their journeys to recovery from mental illness. WRAP has been used ever since in recovery programs around the world, including DMH

Today's celebrity women have used their fame to help eliminate the stigma that is often associated with having a mental illness. Glenn Close worked on an educational campaign, "Bring Change 2 Mind," which assisted in increasing mental health awareness across the United States. While Close worked as a political lobbyist on behalf of people living with serious mental illness, she gave a voice to those who feel stigmatized.

Model, television host, and new mom Chrissy Teigen has been reducing stigma around Postpartum Depression, sharing her personal struggle after the birth of her daughter last year. She wrote an essay published in the March 2017 issue of Glamour Magazine, and has posted freely on Twitter to her more than 4.5 million followers.

Also vocal about their own recovery from mental illness, Kristen Bell, Halle Berry, Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Lewis, Demi Lovato, and the late Carrie Fisher have become positive role models, shedding light on the fact that mental health issues can affect anyone. Demi Lovato has become a mentor to teens and young adults with mental health challenges and mental illness.

EOHHS Secretary Sudders and DMH Commissioner Joan Mikula are among the many brilliant and compassionate women are leading the way in shaping mental health policy, research, and advocacy. We appreciate the contributions made thus far, and look forward to the next generation of women leaders in the mental health community.
Commissioner Mikula Visits Senior Living on Bellingham Hill in Chelsea

Metro Boston Area Director Patricia Kenny, DMH client at Senior Living, and Commissioner Mikula
Commissioner Joan Mikula, Metro Boston Area Director Patricia Kenny, and Director of Community Services Cindy St. Pierre recently visited Senior Living at Bellingham Hill in Chelsea. Senior Living at Bellingham Hill, owned and operated by MHPI, Mental Health Programs, Inc. is a facility that provides people with mental illness who are elderly, as well, individuals from the community, with housing and supportive services. Services to DMH clients include counseling, support for medical needs via registered nurses, personal care, assisting with errands, connection to community resources, and a range of social and cultural events.

Commissioner Mikula, meeting with Renee, a DMH client.
The visit included meeting with MHPI's President Sheldon D. Bycoff; Vice President and Administrator of Service-Enriched Housing Alice Rose; Project Director for Behavioral Health Beverly Reardon; and Program Director Elizabeth Norton, as well as a tour of the residence.

A highlight of the visit was meeting the clients and hearing their stories. They seemed very happy, well-attended to, and appreciative of their opportunity to live there and receive services.
