Due to the bad weather on Sunday, January 4, the Officer Training & Examination has been rescheduled for this Sunday, January 11, following worship. A light lunch will be served. We will therefore wait until Sunday, January 18 to ordain and install the new ruling elders and deacons after they have been trained and examined.

In addition, the Session meeting that was cancelled due to extreme weather last Tuesday night will take place this Sunday, January 11 at 2 p.m. following the training.
Congregational Meeting - Sunday, January 25, 2015

There will be a Congregational Meeting on Sunday, January 25, 2015 following worship for the purpose of (1) receiving the budget, (2) voting on church by-law changes, and (3) electing remaining officers.  The by-law changes are mainly minor in nature, and copies of the by-laws with the proposed changes will be available in the office well in advance of the meeting.

2015 Pledges

Your Session is hard at work to compile our 2015 Budget.  If you haven't made your financial faith commitment for 2015, now is the time to make this prayerful, faithful decision. Maybe you can't find, or didn't receive, your pledge card?  Not to worry: additional pledge cards are available through the church office.

Isabel Circle - Thursday, January 22, 2015

Isabel Circle will meet at the home of Lolla Ballard at 119 South 7th Street at 7:00 P.M. on Thursday, January 22, 2015. Deb Dingman will facilitate the Bible study which will be followed by the business meeting and fellowship. Bible Study Guides are available for $9.00 in the church office. All interested people are welcome to attend.

Lesson Four from the 2014-2015 Horizons Bible Study, Reconciling Paul: A Contemporary Study of 2 Corinthians by Elizabeth Hinson-Hasty, is titled, "Carrying In Our Bodies Jesus' Acts Of Healing, Reconciliation, And Love." The Biblical Focus Text is 2 Corinthians 4:7 - 5:10. Lesson Three explored the meaning of Paul's reference to "old" and "new" covenants in 2 Corinthians and considered how these ideas relate to our contemporary understanding of Christian relationships with people of different
faith traditions. Lesson Four focuses on Paul's understanding of how the community of faith, the "body of believers," carries Jesus' death within it by continuing acts of healing, reconciliation, and love.

What Goes Up Must Come Down

A dedicated group of four came together in December to put up the Christmas trees, wreaths and greens around the Sanctuary, which resulted in a beautifully decorated Advent and Christmas season for our church.  But, the specialness of the season is only made more so by the fact that it is one of many seasons in the liturgical year. This coming Sunday we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord, and you will see the paraments changed to white, as we go into the green colors of Ordinary Time, followed by the purple of Lent.

This Saturday, January 10 at 9 a.m. there will be an assembly of people to help take down the Christmas decorations and ready us for the seasons to come.  Many hands make light work - so please come and join the transformers.

Thank You

We want to thank the Deacons and all at Faith Church for the unique surprise on Sunday.

All the Santa's were so appreciated and such a wonderful, caring expression of kindness.  We will treasure each and every one of them.

God Bless everyone.

Christmas 2014

Dear Partners in the Gospel,

Thank you, thank you for gifting me with a share of a water well through the Presbyterian Giving Catalog.  I'm thrilled to be a part of such a life-giving life-saving project!

Every day I thank God for the privilege of counting you as colleagues. The life and work of Faith UPC are so much richer because of your labors on behalf of the Gospel. Bless you!

Thanks again.

God bless,
Kathy Stoner-Lasala
Tree of Hope Keeps on Giving

Many thanks to the members of our congregation who gave gifts to others throughout the world through the Tree of Hope project. There were 35 gifts given that have been hung on the tree, some from individuals and some from groups. Some gave gifts because they are farmers and understand the importance of farm tools and the value of crops. Others chose gifts to honor the special interests of a loved one studying a foreign language or a child who loves animals:

1   Young Adult Volunteer Spanish Lesson to help alleviate the challenges that come with communication barriers when serving in Spanish-speaking countries

6   Bags of Seeds filled with rice, corn, millet, or sorghum to give communities sustenance and hope

10  Families of Chickens for eggs and more chickens to provide a continuous source of  food and nourishment

6   Sets of Farming Tools to make it possible to grow and harvest a fruitful crop

1   Bag of 225 tilapia fingerlings to start a fish farm

1   bag of Moringa tree seeds (5.5 lb) with enough seeds to start a small nursery

2  shares of a Community Water Well to provide clean water for drinking, bathing, washing, and irrigation to an entire community, giving them a reliable and convenient source of water

7  School Kits - for children who have had their lives disrupted by war or natural disaster to enhance their sense of stability and to keep up with their education

1 Community Garden - For many urban areas, healthy and affordable produce is hard to find.  Educating individuals on cultivating their own neighborhood gardens can provide balanced nutrition, income, meaningful employment, and a sense of community.

-------------

It's easy to see that Faith United Presbyterian Church cares about and been making a real impact on the world community outside its doors.

We are a community of faith that strengthens itself in Christ
by worshipping together, serving each other,
and reaching out to those in need, both in our church family and the world at large.

2015 Directory Information

It will soon be time  to publish the 2015 church membership directory (white book) for new church officers.  PLEASE, if you have changed your telephone number (perhaps you've dropped your landline) or have moved to a new address during 2014, call the church office or email at faithup@maplecity.com so that Vicki will have your most current information.  We'd like our directory to be as up to date and as useful as possible.  The only reliable way to get this information is for you to tell us!

We want to have the new directories available for all of our church officers at the beginning of January. (NOTE:  This is not to be confused with the pictorial directory coming out in April or May.)  Even if you have given the Hottles your new information for the pictorial directory, the church office will not have access to that in time for the January 2015 directories, so please let the office know your most current information.

New Officer Training

Are you a new Deacon or Ruling Elder on Session?  In addition to the Officer Training & Examination of Officers on Sunday, January 4, 2015 at our church, the Presbytery also offers training sessions for new Deacons & Elders on your choice of one of five Saturdays, each held from 8:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. with lunch served at noon. The training is taught by Rev. Richard Johnson, Pastor of the Biggsville United Presbyterian Church.

WHAT IS TAUGHT?

During each training event participants will
  1. Examine and explore the significance of their personal faith to their call to ministry.
  2. Examine the core beliefs of the PCUSA through the confessions of the church.
  3. Look at each part of the Book of Order and how each applies to their work, and spend some time learning just how amendments and overtures, creeds and confessions become part of the Constitution.
  4. In addition, attendees will tiptoe through the minefield of decision-making and the various ways decisions can be made
  5. Give special attention to addressing controversial issues and conflicts when they arise within the life of the congregation.
  6. Time will be given to help both ruling elders and deacons understand the ministry and role deacons play in the life of the church as well as consider the breadth of the deacons' ministry
  7. Ruling elders will be introduced to the many facets of their office as they seek to lead their congregations and shape their ministries.

Time for Annual Reports

Session Committee Moderators and other group leaders -- as 2014 draws to a close, it will soon be time for Vicki to publish our Annual Report to the congregation to be distributed at the next Annual Meeting in January. Let us know who was on your committee and what your committee did during the year to support the overall vision and mission of our church.

In addition to keeping the congregation informed about church life, these reports are invaluable to new moderators coming on as they learn their responsibilities.

Reports from the following committees, boards, and groups have usually been included: Pastor, Clerk of Session, Finance & Stewardship Committee (includes Audit, Investments, Budget, Memorials), Board of Deacons,  Worship, Personnel, Outreach, Washday Ministry,  Fellowship, Sewing Circle, Mission, Thai Circle, Nominating Committee, Music, Christian Education, Wednesday Night Live, Youth Ministries, Fillman Fellowship, Presbyterian Women, Presbyterian Women Finances, Bereavement Committee.  Added to the Annual Report will be the 2014 Profit & Loss Budget vs. Actual, Profit & Loss Budget Overview for 2015, and Pledges for 2015.

If you have questions about what to cover in your report, there are some copies of last year's Annual Report in the office.
