Notice of Congregational Meeting

 September 7, 2014

   11:30 a.m. - during the potluck

The Session of Faith United Presbyterian Church has called a special Congregational Meeting for the purpose of officially dissolving the Pastor Nominating Committee (PNC), as their work is so beautifully completed.  The meeting will be held in the Social Hall following worship during the "Family of Faith" BBQ & potluck dinner.

Family of Faith Sunday - September 7, 2014

graphic-bbq-dad.jpg

We will come together at 10:30 a.m. as a Family of Faith joined around the communion table as we celebrate the Lord's Supper in worship. We'll sing together with the choir.  We'll get business done together in the Social Hall in a brief Congregational Meeting to officially dissolve the Pastor Nominating Committee, now that its work is done. And finally, as Presbyterians inevitably do, we'll eat together.

So, please be here at 10:30 a.m. to get started and bring hearts open to the Holy Spirit and to the presence of Jesus at the Table.

After worship, bring your appetites and a side dish + your own table service to the Social Hall because we will be providing grilled meat and beverages, and as a congregation we will share one another's favorite sides and desserts.  Come one, come all, and enjoy.  We'll get business done with a very short Congregational Meeting while we munch, and then let the festivities begin!  Bring your friends and neighbors too!  The Family of Faith has lots of room.

Wednesday Night Live

It is time to start signing up for Wednesday Night Live.   Our theme this year is the Parables of Jesus. I am also very excited to announce it is the 25th year of WNL.

WNL is sponsored by our church and is a program for children in grades 1st through 6th grade.  It is held on Wednesday nights from 3:20 to 6 starting on Sept. 24th.  The "WNL family picnic" is September 10th at 5:15. Food and table service are provided and all WNL children and their families as well as volunteers are welcome to attend. A short informational meeting will be held after dinner and WNL booklets will be available.

Sign up soon.  The sooner I know how many children we will have, the easier it will be to arrange the carpools and prepare for what we need to run this very important program. Registration forms are being sent in the mail this week and are also available in the church office and in the Social Hall after church on Sundays.

We have a good list started of volunteers but we also need more! See me if interested or sign up in the Social Hall as well.  Volunteering opportunities include being on the kitchen team to wash dishes, providing snacks for a week, or desserts for a few of the dinners. We need drivers, table parents, teachers or teacher helpers, or help with recreation, crafts, and music, We can also use monetary donations for scholarships or supplies used at WNL.  Finally, we need your weekly prayers for the success of this program.

Please let me know if you have any questions or know of someone who hasn't come before so I can get them the information.  Thank You!

CWS Tools & Blankets Offering - Sunday, September 21

This past week, Church World Service shipped material goods to the Sisters of Hope Charitable Community and Disaster Relief Outreach in Garrett, KY. Floyd County, Kentucky was flooded August 23-24 by drenching rains, and the Sisters of Hope are responding. CWS is shipping 360 CWS Emergency Cleanup Buckets, 240 CWS Hygiene Kits and 300 CWS Blankets to the relief agency. These materials are provided to survivors in the communities of Prestonsburg, Allen, Martin and other nearby towns.

In Indonesia, after being dormant for more than 400 years, the 8,530-foot Mt. Sinabung volcano on Sumatra Island, Indonesia, erupted in August 2010. Since then, more than 200 eruptions have displaced 30,000-plus people from 34 villages. The last major eruption, on Feb. 1, 2014, killed 14 people, including seven members of the Indonesian Christian Student Movement, known as GMKI, who were trying to save people from the fast-moving currents of hot gas and rock that can reach speeds of up to 450 mph and temperatures of 1,830 degrees F.

Since February, volcanic activity has decreased and some of the displaced have returned to their homes and villages after authorities declared it safe to do so. However, many others are unable to go home. Their homes and villages are destroyed and covered under lava and ash.  There are still 14,382 displaced -- 4,105 households in 28 shelters and 370 families in temporary housing.  CWS is focusing on the ongoing humanitarian needs of the displaced still in camps/shelters and on providing non-food item packages to those in the camps, including hygiene kits, baby kits, sleeping mats, and blankets to 1,502 households (and 162 babies) in nine camps.

Gift of the Heart School Kits
 -
Ready to Pack!

We will be packaging 37 Gift of the Heart School Kits at 9:15 a.m. (up in the Youth Room) on September 7 with the help of our church youth and sending the kits to distribution points in Little Rock, Arkansas or New Windsor, Maryland.  Monetary donations toward the cost of shipping would be most welcome.

Again, THANK YOU!!!!

Discover a Season of Peace

Season of Peace
is a four-week pilgrimage spanning five Sundays developed by the PCUSA which is designed to deepen the pursuit of peace for congregations, small groups, families, and individuals. Through daily peace reflections, family activities such as peace cards, Bible studies, and other online resources, you are invited to define and deepen your calling as a peacemaker.  This Season is a time of encouragement, challenge, inspiration, and education.

All of these resources are designed to culminate in the Peacemaking Offering, traditionally received on World Communion Sunday, the first Sunday in October.  The Offering gives us a concrete way to contribute locally and nationally to the work of peace enabling the Presbyterian peacemaking Program to:
  • Inspire new approaches to active peacemaking;
  • Equip God's people to be compassionate, prophetic peacemakers; and
  • Connect communities of peace in accompaniment, mutual learning and shared action for the transformation of the world.
What are the opportunities Faith Church is offering for you to participate in this pilgrimage?
  •  Providing a link to subscribe to Path of Peace Daily Devotions for this four-week period. The 2014 Path of Peace Daily Devotions were authored by Presbyterians who travelled to Israel and Palestine in April/May of 2014 for the Peacemaking Program conference, Mosaic of Peace. Conference participants reflected on scripture readings from The Biblical Witness to Peacemaking and were guided by stories and experiences shared by our Israeli and Palestinian church partners, who live with military occupation as the backdrop of church life.  To receive these daily devotions go to http://www.presbyterianmission.org/ministries/peacemaking/path-of-peace-daily-reflections/.  You can subscribe by email or by RSS.  If you would like to preview by taking a look at last year's Daily Peace Reflections, click on that link on the page above.
  • Incorporating parts of the five-session Bible study that helps us in recognizing peace, finding peace, practicing peace, extending peace, and living peace.
  • Use of a special hymn that was written by Carolyn Winfrey Gillette to support the work of the Presbyterian Peacemaking Program and its annual special offering called "O God, the Things That Make for Peace." The hymn is based on the Bible study mentioned above.
  • A special interfaith "Prayer for Peace" event honoring the International Day of Peace will be scheduled for Wednesday, September 17, in conjunction with Monmouth College to include the civic and campus community in front of the Intercultural House at 727 E. Broadway at 5:30 p.m. Following this half-hour service, all will be invited to a Group Soup Meal in the Social Hall at Faith Church starting at 6:00 p.m. We will be asking the congregation to bring one vegetable, broth, bullion, or a bread to church on September 14, the Sunday before, and these food offerings will be brought forward during worship.  The Mission Committee will prepare the soup a day ahead on September 16 during their Mission Committee meeting.
  • Pastor Stoner-Lasala will lead a weekly series of discussion groups on Eboo Patel's book Acts of Faith on Wednesday evenings at 6 p.m.  Dr. Patel will be speaking at Monmouth College on October 28. His topic will be "Interfaith Leadership in a Time of Global Religious Conflict." The book is available for sale ($10) in the church office. More copies will be ordered if needed.
  • Denominational bulletin inserts on Anti-bullying and International Peacemaking during the month of September.
  • A Season of Peace will culminate in World Communion Sunday and the Peacemaking Offering on October 5.
You will be hearing more about the components of this program as we travel through A Season of Peace.
