WOW!!

Ice Cream Social - Apple Pie

Preliminary reports indicate that approximately 450 people were served at Faith's Ice Cream Social and that over $2,200 was raised for mission projects. In addition, and perhaps more importantly, over 100 members and friends of our church of all ages elbow-to-elbow did an outstanding job of assisting with the project (wish we had space to list you all). Oh yes, kudos to the weatherman--the 100 degree heat made it easy to sell ice cream!!! (The outstanding outside crews of meat cookers and drive-up servers may not share that tribute to the heat!)

Comments from the public were very complimentary of the food and the friendly, smiling, hard workers. The committee is very appreciative of the enthusiastic cooperation and assistance of the congregation, whether as a worker, ticket seller or hosting a guest. The shadow of Pastor Charles was in evidence as it was he who shook us out of our corporate apathy at this time last year----and boy, did Pastor Kathy pick up that torch with her leadership and energy.

It is evident that Faith United is alive and well -- have you found your area(s) of interest and involvement?  And can you invite an unchurched friend or former attendee of this church to come along?

Again our thanks to all,

The committee:  Bus Kelloggs, Gene Larsons, Darlene Moffet and the Ralph Whitemans

Meals on Wheels

Due to a cancellation there is yet one more opening on Friday, August 29 for someone to help deliver meals to shut-ins in the community.  If you would like to do this, please call Vicki in the church office at 734-5129 and report to Jamieson Center by 10:20 a.m. on Friday.

Thank you.

Family of Faith Sunday - September 7, 2014

graphic-bbq-dad.jpg

There are two things to know about Sunday, September 7, a week from this coming Sunday.  First, our worship service will move to its regular time at 10:30 a.m.  (with the choir) And second, bring your appetites and a side dish + your own table service because we will be providing grilled meat and beverages, and as a congregation we will share one another's favorite sides and desserts.  Come one, come all, and enjoy.  We'll get business done with a very short Congregational Meeting while we munch, and then let the festivities begin!  Bring your friends and neighbors too!

Wednesday Night Live

It is time to start signing up for Wednesday Night Live.   Our theme this year is the Parables of Jesus. I am also very excited to announce it is the 25th year of WNL.

WNL is sponsored by our church and is a program for children in grades 1st through 6th grade.  It is held on Wednesday nights from 3:20 to 6 starting on Sept. 24th.  The "WNL family picnic" is September 10th at 5:15. Food and table service are provided and all WNL children and their families as well as volunteers are welcome to attend. A short informational meeting will be held after dinner and WNL booklets will be available.

Sign up soon.  The sooner I know how many children we will have, the easier it will be to arrange the carpools and prepare for what we need to run this very important program. Registration forms are being sent in the mail this week and are also available in the church office and in the Social Hall after church on Sundays.

We have a good list started of volunteers but we also need more! See me if interested or sign up in the Social Hall as well.  Volunteering opportunities include being on the kitchen team to wash dishes, providing snacks for a week, or desserts for a few of the dinners. We need drivers, table parents, teachers or teacher helpers, or help with recreation, crafts, and music, We can also use monetary donations for scholarships or supplies used at WNL.  Finally, we need your weekly prayers for the success of this program.

Please let me know if you have any questions or know of someone who hasn't come before so I can get them the information.  Thank You!

Gift of the Heart School Kits
 -
Ready to Pack!

To the congregation of Faith Church -- many thanks go out to all of you who made it possible to donate 36 complete school kits to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance so that they can distribute these school kits to places where they are most needed, such as by Syrian refugee children whose lives are in chaos and need to continue their education. Special thanks to Liz Nieman, Marj Phelps, and Ruth Wright for sewing 36 cloth tote bags for each child to carry and keep their school supplies and for everyone who donated items from erasers to rulers to scissors.  We will be packaging the kits on September 7 with the help of our church youth and sending them to distribution points in Little Rock, Arkansas or New Windsor, Maryland.  Monetary donations toward the cost of shipping would be most welcome.

Again, THANK YOU!!!!

Dear Faith UP Church VBS program,

Thank you so much for your generous donation to the Community Care Days Fund.  Your donation allowed us to purchase supplies and fulfill a need for a person in our community.  Once again we thank you for your thoughtfulness and generosity.

2014-2015 Horizons Bible Study Books Now Available

The 2014 - 2015 Horizons Bible Study is "Reconciling Paul:  A Contemporary Study of 2 Corinthians" by Elizabeth Hinson -Hasty.

When the PW/Horizons Bible study committee selected 2 Corinthians for the topic, they requested that the study focus on the following aspects of faith: generosity, grace, forgiveness, living by faith, the image of God, funds development, ambassadors of reconciliation (peacemaking), reconciliation, the ways in which Paul's letters are a response to these themes, what was in the original letters, and Paul himself.

The books are illustrated with traditional and contemporary stained glass designs that are truly beautiful.

Copies may be purchased from Vicki at the church office 8 - noon and 1 - 4 p.m. M-F for $9.00.  Please make checks payable to Faith United Presbyterian Church and write "PW Horizons Study Guide" on the memo line.

The following was posted by Susan Lipp, wife of Irv Lipp, on Caring Bridge on Sunday, August 24:

Hi,

It is with heavy heart that I have sad news for you ~ Irvin passed late Friday afternoon, having fought AML with tremendous courage, hope and a very hearty constitution, since diagnosed in April 2013.

This was after a brief 6-day stay at Sloan Kettering in NYC. As per his wishes, he was not in NYC ~ he had in fact just arrived at Good Shepherd Hospice in Port Jefferson, Suffolk Co., not far from home, when he passed. I was with him, and it seemed there was a commotion of angels' wings as he left. . . I will miss him forever.

Hugs,
Susan
With Sympathy

He had fought a courageous battle with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) since being diagnosed in April 2013.  Funeral Services will be at the Westhampton Presbyterian Church in Westhampton Beach, NY.  Memorial contributions to be made in lieu of flowers to Hope Lodge, American Cancer Society (800-227-2345), or Sloan Kettering, AML Leukemia research (866-815-9501).

Sincerely,
