Fifty Years Ago This Month...

   1964 - 2014

I got a little ahead of myself last week and mistakenly put the May 6, 1964 Minutes of the Congregational Meeting and Special Session Meeting in the April 27 newsletter, instead of the April 29, 1964 Minutes.  Thus, here are the April 29, 1964 Minutes that you were expecting last week.

SESSION MEETING - APRIL 29, 1964 (condensed)

Elders Present: Morrill, Wells, Patterson, Marshall, Armstrong, Royer, Rhea, Keating, Connell, Kritzer, Manley, Allison, Wallace, Lipes, Hallam, White, and Ebersole and the moderator, the Rev. H. D. Finley. Also present were Moffet, chairman of the Board of Trustees and Stated Supply pastors Ayoub and Phillippe. Excused: Beveridge, Parsons, Thompson, Carlson, Simpson, and Rankin.

Clerk of Session: Transfer of church letter requests: Steve McCutcheon to College Avenue UP Church of Aledo, IL; Mr. and Mrs. James Niebuhr to West Side UP Church of Monmouth, IL; Mr. & Mrs. Howard Hayes to Trinity Methodist Church of Beaver Dam, WI; Mr. & Mrs. Clifford Van Tine to Nisswa Community Church, Nisswa, MN. All requests granted.

Deacons' Report: The Women's Association is to be responsible for the securing of flowers for worship services and the Deacons will then distribute these to shut-ins and the ill. Report approved.

Facilities Committee: Because of his plans to leave the community, Elder Morrill, chairman of the Facilities Committee, resigned his office. Motion made and carried to name David Turnbull as head of the Facilities Committee. Agreed by the Session that the report from the Facilities Committee be presented at the Congregational Meeting on May 6 by Wallace and Manley.

Worship Committee: Hallam reported that Deacons not yet ordained and installed be ordained and installed by Dr. Finley at 9:30 Service on May 10 and that infants be baptized by Mr. Phillippe at the 11 o'clock Service on the same day. Moved and carried that this report be adopted.

Christian Education: Motion passed to approve the purchase of Recognition materials for use in various areas of the church school.

Stewardship & Mission:
  • Motion passed that a special offering for Race Relations Projects, as authorized by the General Assembly be taken on May 24 and that special notice of this offering be made in Focus on Faith, that envelopes be available in the pews on that day, and that mention of the offering be made from the pulpit.
  • Motion passed that it become the policy of Faith Church that no fund raising projects be sponsored by any adult organization of Faith Church and that no Faith Church building shall be used for any fund raising purposes. For purposes of this policy an adult is defined as anyone past high school age.
The Rev. W. F. Ayoub tendered his resignation effective June 15, 1964 in order that he may accept a call to become pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, Nashville, Illinois. The resignation was accepted and words of appreciation for the work done by Mr. Ayoub were expressed.

Rev. Mr. Phillippe requested permission to be out of town May 18 through 28. Approved.

The next regular Session meeting is to be held at 8 p.m. on May 13 with a possible special meeting to be held preceding or following the congregational meeting on May 6.

A Rare Treat - 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 2, 2014

Renowned Finnish composer Jaakko Mantyjarvi will meet with students at Monmouth College and Knox College and give two public lectures about his work during a six-day residency, Monday April 28 through Saturday, May 3.
The lectures will take place on Wednesday, April 30, at 7 p.m. in the Barnes Electronic Classroom of Monmouth's Hewes Library and on Friday, May 2, at 4 p.m. in Jay Hall in Knox's Ford Center for the Fine Arts.  Both are free and open to the public.

On Saturday evening, May 3, a concert, also free and open to the public, will be presented at 7:30 p.m. at the Central Congregational Church located on the Public Square in Galesburg. Choral groups from the two colleges will perform a combined concert, featuring the world premiere of a new work by Mantyjarvi commissioned by Knox and Monmouth colleges. The concert will include nine works by Mantyjarvi.  Choral groups will include the Monmouth College Chorale, Monmouth College Chamber Choir and Galesburg Community Chorus, all directed by Tim Pahel, assistant professor of music and director of choral and vocal activities at Monmouth.  Also performing will be the Knox College Choir, the Knox College Chamber Singers and Nova Singers, all directed by Laura Lane, professor of music and director of choral activities at Knox.

This is a historic event, in that it is the first time that Monmouth and Knox have come together to form a unified choral ensemble, and the first time that they have jointly commissioned a choral work.
