Welcome to Our New Members

We are very pleased to welcome new members Douglas and Sarah Torrance and their son Gabriel, who recently celebrated his first birthday.  The Torrance family comes to us by Transfer of Letter from First Presbyterian Church of Moscow, Idaho.  Doug finished his PhD earlier this year at the University of Idaho and is now Visiting Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Monmouth College.  Sarah is a stay-at home mom with a Master's in flute performance.  A musical couple, Doug also plays the clarinet.  They are excited to be here and very enthusiastic about getting involved at Faith United.  Please give them your warmest welcome when you see them. They were publicly received before the congregation last Sunday, January 26.

This Sunday, February 9, Doug & Sarah will be providing Special Music for us during the prelude and offertory -- Doug on clarinet and Sarah on flute.

Youth and Adults of the Presbytery Honor Dr. King's legacy through Mission Work

On this past Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, 68 members of the Presbytery of Great Rivers decided to take it as a day on, not a day off. These members were engaged in projects in Rock Island as part of the Presbytery-Wide Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Weekend of Mission and Celebration.

On Sunday, January 19, 60 youth and adults took to the slopes for an afternoon of skiing at Ski Snowstar in Andalusia, IL. After skiing we all headed to the Broadway Presbyterian Church in Rock Island, IL for an evening of fun activities, pizza, and ice breakers.

On Monday, all 68 of us split into mission teams to accomplish different projects around Broadway Church and the surrounding neighborhood. Our projects ranged from helping sort the clothing donations that Broadway gives away every month to playing games with the elderly at a nursing home to helping a group home deep clean their kitchens. Most importantly, it gave the youth a chance to meet new people and break out of their comfort zone.  All in all, the trip was an absolute success and everyone had a great time.

On the first Sunday of each month, there will be copies of this kind of monthly financial report in easy-to-read format to show how our income stands in relation to our budgeted expenses for the preceding month and year-to-date. These reports may be found in the back of the church on the table.

Card of Thanks

Dear Faith Church Members,

Thank you for the beautiful basket of flowers sent at Mother's passing.  She loved flowers and she loved the Faith Church Choir.  She sang in the church choir here on and off for many years beginning in 1932 as a freshman at Monmouth College!

Sincerely,
Jane, John, Alis & family

Need Your Piano Tuned?

Dick Griffiths tells us that Glen Core, our church's piano technician, has retired, and he is trying to entice John Duda, from Bettendorf, to consider a trip to Monmouth occasionally to tune pianos in the area. So far there are 7 pianos lined up for John to tune, but it would be nice to have even more to make John's trip worth the drive.

When was your piano last tuned?  Cost is approximately $75 for a normal tuning.  Mr. Duda is more than a tuner; he rebuilds Steinways. His clients include Augustana College, Knox College, and the Orpheum Theatre.  If you would like to be included in the Monmouth-area tunings, please contact Dick Griffiths, either after church or by calling him at 734-3467.

Valentine Luncheon - Sunday, February 16

All are welcome to the Valentine Luncheon after church on Sunday, February 16, in the Social Hall.  Hosted by Isabel Circle, the menu will feature your choice of vegetable or broccoli cheese soup, and egg salad or ham salad sandwiches, with poke cake for dessert. There will be PB&J sandwiches for the kids.  While you are eating, you can look forward to musical entertainment by various members of the congregation.  Donations will be accepted. Please sign up on the RSVP sheet on the office door if you are planning to attend, so that we will know how much food to prepare.  See you then!  Nothing to bring. Just come and enjoy!

Fifty Years Ago This Month...

   1964 - 2014

In the January 30th "Golden Jubilee" article, I talked about how I observed, from reading the early Session Minutes, evidence of attempts at assimilation, reconciliation, and balance in the formation of the new Faith United, as it transitioned from four separate churches into one new church. So, I have reproduced for you here the lists of nominees, and subsequently the elected officers, of the new Faith United Church.

The magic numbers are 24 and 12 -- divisible by four churches and by three classes. Each of the four churches presented its own slate of six nominees for Session and Deacons, respectively, and three for the Board of Trustees.

By the way, it is interesting to note how the women were listed. In 1964 it was still customary for a married woman to be identified by her husband's name, rather than by her own given first name.

Community Care Days - Report from January 28 meeting

In an admirable example of ecumenicalism, a group of local churches are sponsoring Community Care Days.  The initial idea was initiated by Fairview Center Methodist Church and Monmouth First United Methodist Church.  These churches are now inviting other area churches to join the group.

The group of men and women, through cooperative effort, ministers to deserving community residents in need of basic home repair or maintenance.  The collective group of volunteers is known as the Good Samaritan Parish and it typically designates a two-day period each year when pre-approved projects are undertaken.

There is a structure of a board chairman and site committee chairs.  The sites are referred by Jamieson Center, Strom Center, 1st Street Armoury, Mother to Mother, and individuals in the community.  Site committees will consider yard work, light construction, selective heavy construction and painting.  Rob Pierce of Fairview Center Church is the current chair.

At a recent organizational meeting of invited churches, representatives of the Lutheran Church, Sugar Tree Grove United Presbyterian church and Faith Church were also represented.  Additional churches may also be participating.

Any interested member/attendee of Faith is asked to contact Ralph Whiteman (734-4641) to volunteer or to seek specific information regarding this worthy and ecumenical opportunity.  No special skills are required.  Ralph will be present at the Social Hour on Sunday.

The next meeting of Community Care Days, which will be open to all, is February 20 at 6:30 p.m. in the community room of Security Savings Bank.

2014 Elder/Deacon Training Workshops

Congratulations for saying "yes" and accepting the Elder or Deacon position in your church. You heard the call to you from the Holy Spirit and you trusted Him to help you lead the way.

Whether you have been an Elder or Deacon before or this is your first time, these are new times and God has a new vision for you as a leader in and for a congregation that is being challenged to find ways to speak the truth in love...promote peace...work for justice...and much more.

Part of preparing to be ordained and installed is being trained in what is involved in serving a congregation as an Elder or Deacon in the PC(USA). The Presbytery of Great Rivers will be offering five Elder/Deacon Trainings, each held on a Saturday from 8:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.with lunch served at noon

There will be plenty of opportunity for small group conversation along with games... prizes... laughter... serious reflection... and prayer.

The training will be taught by Rev. Richard Johnson, Pastor of the Biggsville United Presbyterian Church.
