Thank Offering Sunday and Potluck - November 24

There are two ways that you can give thanks this Sunday:

(1) We will be taking the Presbyterian Women 2013 Thank Offering during worship. Since 1888, Presbyterian women have expressed gratitude for God's blessings by sharing their blessings through the annual Thank offering. This offering funds programs that relieve pain, provide clean water, alleviate homelessness, provide educational opportunities, promote health and improve the lives of women and children throughout the world. The 2012 offering funded 36 life-changing projects. Please help Presbyterian women continue to support important work nationally and internationally by giving generously to the 2013 Thank Offering. Please make checks payable to Faith United Presbyterian Church and designate "PW Thank Offering" on the memo line or, if giving cash, you may use the blue Thank Offering envelopes that will be in the pews.

(2) After worship next Sunday there will be a Thanksgiving potluck. Please bring your favorite covered dish and your own table service, as we fellowship together and give thanks for our many blessings.

The Church Office will be closed on Thursday, November 28

WNL Children hold up the Thanksgiving Cards  they individually hand colored to include with delivered meals as their contribution to the Community Thanksgiving Dinner. The group made a total of 300 cards over a three-week period and signed their names to them. Pastor Cunningham wrote a prayer to go on the inside of the cards for recipients to use as a special blessing for their meal.

Wednesday Night Live

November 20 was the last Wednesday Night Live for the fall semester. We had a very successful 1st semester!  "Fruits of the Spirit" continues next spring on January 15, and we look forward to seeing everybody then. There will be a skating party on Feb. 5, as well as lots of other fun things to look forward to.

Thanks to all the WNL children who brought canned goods for Jamieson Center during the month of November. It will be a big help to area families.

Decorating the Sanctuary for Christmas - Nov. 25 - 9:00 a.m.

Come join the Worship Committee as our sanctuary witnesses transformation into a space hearalding the Advent of the Christ.  We'll be putting up the two pre-lit Christmas trees which were new last year and so much easier!  Use your creativity to place the wreaths and greenery for a festive mood. If you have had the experience of helping in the past, or if you would like to try something new, please come one and all for lots of fun.

Community  Thanksgiving Service - Monmouth College Chapel

Students, staff, faculty and community members are welcome to attend these ecumenical worship services on Mondays from 12:10-12:40pm in Dahl Chapel.

Tornado Damage in Washington, Pekin, and East Peoria

The word Monday from Sue Krummel, General Presbyter of the Presbytery of Great Rivers, is that in the immediate future, please do not show up at the disaster areas (East Peoria, Pekin, Washington), as only residents are allowed access.  The Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) will be sending a team to help later this week (Wednesday).  If you would like to donate money, please do so to the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, directly to their office or the Presbytery.  You may give an undesignated gift through their website: www.presbyterianmission.org/ministries/pda/ There is a link provided there for gifts. Or, if you would like to donate through Faith United Presbyterian Church, you may make checks payable to Faith UPC and then designate "Presbyterian Disaster Assistance" in the memo line, and we'll have Andrea send one big check to the PDA.

Sue reports that as of Monday, November 18, no church buildings were damaged and, as far as we know, no church members are in the hospital with storm-related injuries, although there was one death in Washington and multiple injuries.  Community members are helping one another with immediate needs.  Please continue to pray for the people whose homes have been destroyed (the media reports estimates of up to 400 homes damaged or destroyed in Washington, a town of 16,000) and for the leaders of their communities, especially pastors Becki Weltmann and Kristie Peterson.  We also have members of our own congregation who have family members who live in Washington and have been directly impacted by the tornado.

Watch the presbytery web page www.greatriverspby.org and Facebook page for updates on how churches and church members can help. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Presbytery-of-Great-Rivers/159445010769873

Lastly, Sue reminds us to think about what is your disaster drill experience in your church?  She relates that Sunday morning, her husband Frosty, who is pastor at First Federated Church in Peoria, told people at the beginning of the service what they would do if a tornado warning came during worship.  That actually did occur, and people did exactly as he had explained.  She suggests that sometime in the next few weeks, have your pastor and ushers or others who are very familiar with the building figure out where you could put everyone from the sanctuary into a safe place and then have them practice. And especially think about what you will do with the people in your church who cannot manage the steps to the basement.

In closing, she reminds us:

"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.  Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea; though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult...God is in the midst of the city; it shall not be moved; God will help it when the morning dawns." (Psalm 46)

Free Thanksgiving Meals for the Tornado-Stricken Areas

The Presbytery of Great Rivers is hosting two free Thanksgiving meals for the tornado-stricken areas.  One meal will be at Don Shute School in East Peoria and one at First Presbyterian Church in Pekin.

Want to contribute money?  Send it to the Presbytery at 1230 W. Candletree Drive, Ste. D, Peoria, IL  61614

PW Mitten Tree - December 8

PW is sponsoring a mitten tree again this year!  Mittens, gloves, and hats will be collected thru December 8 for the Jamieson Center Christmas Store.  We will collect after that as well for Jamieson Center,
as they have requests throughout the winter for these warm items.  Thanks in advance!  Last year we collected two big sacks full and Jamieson Center was very appreciative.
Christmas Care Packages for Monmouth College students - Dec. 8

We would like to thank the many Monmouth College students who participate in the life of our congregation by giving them a care package of goodies during their finals. We need your help.

Please sign up on the office door if you can donate a homemade baked good, microwave popcorn, candy, hot chocolate, or fresh fruit. Please bring it to the church by 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, December 8. Care packages will be assembled and delivered on that day.

Community Thanksgiving Dinner Update
Thanksgiving

At the planning meeting on Tuesday, November 19, final details were discussed about delivery of the turkeys, storage, distribution, and cooking times.  Foil pans
and cooking bags were passed out to the cooks.  Donna Larson will extend our publicity to the electronic bank signs around town.

Response from the congregation and the community has been awesome!  We are
at a good place with regard to donations, both monetary and material, as well as "hands on deck" and delivery drivers.  Thank you so much to everyone for "catching the spirit" of the event and responding with so much enthusiasm to support this very important ministry.

Remember, if you need meals delivered to your home, call Vicki at Faith United Presbyterian Church at 734-5129 from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday - Friday.  She can take your calls through Wednesday, November 27.  If you decide on Thanksgiving morning that you would like a meal delivered to you, call in your reservation at the American Legion Hall 734-2976 (Thanksgiving Day only) because the church office will be closed.

If you would like to help on Thursday between 8 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., please talk to Krista (309-221-4020) or Brad (309-221-3227) Larson. Also, you may check the latest status on the Community Thanksgiving Dinner event Facebook page.

PW Cookie Exchange - December 15 during the Coffee Hour

Two or three of the church's hearing amplifiers seem to be missing from the Ushers' basket in the Narthex. Last summer we had four or five, but we only have two of them now. (Each costs $140 to replace). Please check pockets and bags in case one accidentally traveled home with you and return it to the church as soon as possible so that others can use it too. Thanks!
