Stewardship Commitment Sunday - November 10

Stewardship letters and pledge cards were mailed out last week.  Each fall the Stewardship Committee asks the congregation to make a financial commitment to the ministries of the church for the upcoming year.

This Sunday is Commitment Sunday, and you have been asked to reflect and pray about the use of your resources in the context of God's providing love.  The committee will compile the response in order to assist the Session in determining the scope of ministry that will be possible for the coming year.

2013 Stewardship Committee:  Mary Distin, Scott McClintock, Rod Lemon, Joyce Patterson, Sally Bowman.

If 100 people could each give $6 more per week, this would add more than $30,000 to the current annual budget and help preserve our reserves well into the future.

Crock-Pot Cook-Off

There were eight delicious entries in our 4th Annual Crock-Pot Cook-Off.  The first prize of a $25 gift certificate to Rovi's was awarded to Martha Whiteman for her Chicken & Noodles. She has kindly shared her recipe with us:

"This is my "Old Family Recipe" that I got from my Quilt group this fall," says Martha.

Crockpot Chicken and Noodles - Submitted by Martha Whiteman

2 cans chicken broth

2 cans creamed chicken soup

2 large boneless skinless chicken breasts

½ stick butter

Cook in crockpot on low setting for 6 hours

Remove chicken breasts and shred them or cut in chunks, return to crockpot with 12 ounces of frozen noodles  (dry noodles or homemade noodles [my preference!] also work).  Continue cooking for 2 more hours.

The Youth are going to be assembling a brand-new cookbook featuring all of the recipes from the past four years of Crock-pot competition to sell as a fund-raiser. The recipe above is a freebee, but we hope (and strongly encourage) that you will want to purchase the whole cookbook for the complete set of delightful recipes!

Thank You

Thank you to all who submitted a crock-pot recipe for the Crock-Pot Cook Off!  With the support of all who came to taste and vote, it was another fabulous success.  The voting was hard with so many wonderful entrées, appetizers, and desserts to choose from. The winner was Crock Pot # 7 -- Chicken & Noodles made by Martha Whiteman.  A big thank you once again for supporting the Jr & Sr High Youth Group's fundraiser for the 2013-14 Youth  Missions.

Organist Yun Kyong Kim - Sunday, November 10

Concert organist Yun Kyong Kim will perform at 3 p.m., Sunday, November 10, at the First Presbyterian Church, 400 E. Carroll Street in Macomb.

Sponsored by the Western Illinois University Chapter of the American Guild of Organists in cooperation with the WIU School of Music, the recital is free and open to the public.

Kim is in great demand as a solo organ recitalist, and is passionate about bringing engaging programs of diverse musical styles to her audiences. Concert reviewers have described her as "a splendid keyboard soloist" and as playing "with great sensitivity and with great élan."

Her program in Macomb will open with traditional music by Louis Vierne and J. S. Bach.  Next she will perform an organ transcription of Prokofievʼs virtuoso Toccata in D minor for piano. The remainder of the program will consist of 20th century music new to Macomb audiences.

Community Thanksgiving Dinner

Thanksgiving

Donated items still needed:

16 oz solo cups

8 oz Styrofoam cups

Sugar Packets

Creamer Packets

Folgers Decaf coffee (small can)

Paper towels  (10-12 rolls)

39-gal. garbage bags

2 packs of thank you cards/envelopes

stamps

There is a box located in the Youth Wing (where the freezer is located) where these items can be dropped off.

Lots of delivery drivers will be needed on Thanksgiving Day from about 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.  If we have 30 delivery units of two persons each, each unit only needs to fill and deliver about 10 meals.  So, with a work force of 60 delivery folks, we can get the 300 meals packed & delivered hot and on time.  We have a quite a few delivery units signed up, but could still use some more. Following delivery, you are welcome to fill your plates and sit down and enjoy your own Thanksgiving meal at the American Legion with friends old & new.

Update from Nov. 5 Planning Meeting:  Brad Larson conducted a planning meeting with 17 present.  The agenda covered turkeys (22), who will cook them and where, when they will be delivered by the vendor, storage of frozen turkeys, distribution to cooks, carving procedures; delivering and preparing the deliveries; the WNL children's cards; Wednesday tasks & workers; supplies needed; a blessing from Pastor Charles before the food delivery; publicity, Brad & Krista's podcast on WMOI radio Tuesday morning, poster placement, bank signs; logistics & schedules.

UPDATE FROM KRISTA LARSON: (Also posted on the Community Thanksgiving Dinner Facebook page)   After last night's meeting, we determined help is needed: Wednesday (evening only-6pm) - assembling meal delivery boxes, and could possibly use some help carving a few turkeys. (Just need a few people here.) The biggest need is Thursday from 11:00am to clean-up (approx. 2:30). If a few who are confident in their cooking skills wanted to volunteer, we could use a point person Thursday morning to make gravy, green beans and yams. Otherwise, the biggest need for help remains to be Thursday 11:00-2:30. We need a large number of helpers during that time to: pack delivery meals; replenish food from the kitchen; serve food; serve drinks; cut & serve pie; clear tables (and probably misc. things). I do not need to know right now, but if any of those work, we'll be happy to have more people at those times.  THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!

NEXT MEETING:  Tuesday, November 19 - 6:15 p.m. (final planning meeting)

What to Give for Christmas?

We have received copies of the new Giving Catalogs from the Presbyterian Mission Agency.  Some have been placed in the Social Hall and some on the Welcome Table in the Narthex. These catalogs are full of interesting gift ideas--everything from a mule for transport to clean-up buckets for disaster areas; an emergency life pack to school kits, just to mention a few. Some are priced low enough to be gifts from individuals; others are better suited for a group or family gift. Think of what a difference you can make in the world by using a little creative thinking in your Christmas (or anytime) gift giving!

"The new Presbyterian Giving Catalog will provide Presbyterians with examples of how their generosity can help make an impact around the world. With examples like goats, chicks or new wells providing clean drinking water, the catalog will help Presbyterians make a direct connection with those on the receiving end of their gifts."

An online version of the catalog will be available next month on the PCUSA.org website
