 October Mission Focus:
Operation Backpack

Operation Backpack is a program of the 1st Street Armoury and supported by Monmouth Rotary.  The program provides food to the children in Monmouth-Roseville Schools who need it the most.  Children are identified by school district officials who distribute the number of backpacks needed each week.  Each backpack provides the child with 6 nutritious kid-friendly meals to help bridge the gap at home over the weekend and school holidays. The need continues to grow with 81% of Pre-K through 6th grade students in District 238 qualifying for free or reduced priced lunches.  Last year 186 students were served and the number is expected to grow to 220 this year.  Every little effort makes a child feel less forgotten.  Better test scores, improved reading skills, positive behavior, improved health and increased attendance have all been attributed to the success of Operation Backpack.

Saturday of Service - November 2

Do you have a 3-hour project that needs to be done at your home? Maybe painting, packaging items, raking leaves, moving furniture, working with children, working with elderly, assisting with setting up Christmas decorations, delivering supplies, etc.? Would you like to have a college student(s) perform these services?

Monmouth College is hosting their Saturday of Service program on Saturday, November 2 from 12:30 - 3:30 p.m.  They are looking for requests from community groups  whose members, particularly seniors, have need for volunteer help that can be performed by students as they learn about the importance of civic engagement in their community. All they ask is that you sign up in advance and supply the needed materials such as paint, ladders, brushes, etc.

If you are interested, please contact the church office at 734-5129.  Vicki will put your work request on a list that needs to be submitted to the Office of Student Involvement at the college by Friday, October 25.  There is no cost for the program.

Budget Requests - Due by Oct. 27

The 2014 budget request forms have been distributed to all those responsible for expense line items in the church budget.  Please return these to the church office with your 2014 estimates filled in. Amounts budgeted for 2013 and spent through October 6, 2013 have been filled in  to assist you in making your 2014 estimates.

Completed requests may be placed in the yellow folder marked "2014 Budget Requests" on Vicki's desk in the church office. The Stewardship & Budget Committee needs these turned in by Sunday, October 27.  They can also be mailed to the church at 200 South 8th Street, Monmouth, IL  61462.

Thank you for your help!

Thank You

Two new computers and one new monitor have been purchased for the church office to replace machines more than ten years old, one for the secretary and one for the CE Director/WNL Director.  In addition, the treasurer's computer has been upgraded with added memory. Vicki Briscoe, Ann Phelps, Deb Dingman, and Andrea Crum are ecstatic with the speed and efficiency of their computers and want to express their appreciation to the Session for approving the purchases which were paid for with Memorial Funds.

Thank you!!

Community Thanksgiving Dinner Thanksgiving

The Community Thanksgiving Dinner is quickly shaping up, and turn-out was very good at the October 22 meeting. Timelines are being developed and sign-ups continue. This will truly be a community effort with funding and volunteers from other churches in the community as well as Faith. Posters will be going up, and radio, newspaper, and bank sign publicity will be going out as T-Day approaches.

Here are some donated items needed:

9" Plates

6" Plates

16 oz solo cups

8 oz Styrofoam cups

Napkins

Aluminum Foil

Sugar Packets

Sweet & Low Packets

Creamer Packets

Folgers Decaf Coffee

Instant Tea (jars)

Paper towels

There will be a box located in the Youth Wing next to the freezer where these items can be dropped off.

Lots of delivery drivers will be needed on Thanks-giving Day from about 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.  If we have 30 delivery units of two persons each, each unit only needs to fill and deliver about 10 meals. So, with a work force of 60 delivery folks, we can get the 300 meals packed & delivered hot and on time. The more the merrier!  Following delivery, you are welcome to fill your plates and sit down and enjoy your own Thanksgiving meal at the American Legion with friends old & new.

Next planning meeting:  Tuesday, November 5 6:15 p.m.

Crock-Pot Cook-Off Entry

Yes, it's time again to hold our 4th Annual Crock-pot Cook-off on November 3rd, following worship.

The rules are simple: Select a recipe that is cooked only in your crock. This can include anything from breakfast dishes, to soups, main courses, to desserts. Basically, anything that you can cook in a crock-pot.

Adults, youth, and children will then sample each one, voting on the yummiest dish. The person with the most votes will win a gift certificate to a local restaurant!

The entry fee is $5.00, and it would be helpful if it is submitted along with your name and what you'll be making to the office by Sunday, October 27th.

Taste-buds Needed!
