Community Thanksgiving Dinner Thanksgiving

Krista Larson has created a Community Thanksgiving Dinner Facebook Event page where you can indicate if you are planning to come and how you would like to help, or if you just want to show your support for the event.

On the page she describes the Community Thanksgiving Dinner event as "a traditional Thanksgiving Dinner of turkey, mashed potatoes & gravy, green beans, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, dinner rolls and pumpkin pie. Diabetic dinners are available upon request. There is no cost for the meal." The meal will be served at the American Legion Hall from 12 noon - 1:30 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 28, 2013.

In addition to sit-down meals and carry-outs, home deliveries are also available and can be arranged by calling Vicki Young Briscoe at the Faith United Presbyterian Church office (through November 27th) at 734-5129, or the American Legion Hall at 734- 2976 on the morning of November 28th.

HELPERS are needed both Wed. (11/27) and Thurs. (11/28). Call 309-221-4020 or 309-221-3227 to sign up.

Donations in any amount may be dropped off at Security Savings  Bank in Monmouth, payable to the "Community Thanksgiving Dinner" account.

This coming Sunday, Brad and Krista Larson will have a sign-up board for volunteers in the Social Hall of Faith Church. Some of the volunteer positions are delivery meal drivers on Thanksgiving, food preparers the day before Thanksgiving (peeling potatoes, tearing up bread, baking pumpkin pies, chopping celery and onions), food preparers on the morning of Thanksgiving, food servers, delivery box packers, etc. Pick your favorite role, sign up, and be working among friends, old and new!

Look for a press release to appear soon in the Review Atlas detailing how the tradition of the Community Thanksgiving Dinner is being carried on.

Next Community Thanksgiving Dinner planning meeting will be 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday, October 22, 2013, at Faith Church. Open to anyone who is interested.

Crop Walk Logo
               Crop Walk -  October 27

For a second year "Crop Walk" is returning to Monmouth. On Sunday, October 27 at 2:00 walkers will meet at Monmouth College's Huff Center to begin their journey. If you are interested in walking, please see Stephanie Reading in the social hall after church. She will give you a fund-raising packet. If you are unable to walk but would like to donate, walkers will be taking your donations in the Social Hall over the next couple of weeks. Walkers of all ages are welcome!

Read what one pastor wrote to encourage his congregation and ours to participate:

"I walk because I hope to experience the change that Jesus brought forth as he walked from Galilee to Jerusalem transforming the lives of those he encountered. I walk to help others. I walk to change the lives of my children, and to change my life. Let's walk together in our communities' CROP Hunger Walks knowing that we do not walk alone. For just as Jesus walked with the poor, the lonely, the sinful and the hurting, Jesus walks with us. Let's make this the year when we challenge those around us who are looking for a way to be of service to participate in their local Walk. And let them know that they make a difference in the lives of others who are connected to them by our common heritage as the children of God."

(Written by the Reverend Jimmie R. Hawkins)

Crock-pot Cook-Off Entry

Yes, it's time again to hold our 4th Annual Crock-pot Cook-off on November 3rd, following worship.

The rules are simple: Select a recipe that is cooked only in your crock. This can include anything from breakfast dishes, to soups, main courses, to desserts. Basically, anything that you can cook in a crock-pot.

Adults, youth, and children will then sample each one, voting on the yummiest dish. The person with the most votes will win a gift certificate to a local restaurant!

The entry fee is $5.00, and it would be helpful if it is submitted along with your name and what you'll be making to the office by Sunday, October 27th.

Taste-buds Needed!

Karen Gould Manuscript Collection at Monmouth College

October 11 - November 26

There will be an exciting opportunity this fall for people interested in church history and documents.  Monmouth College will be the host for the Karen Gould Manuscript Collection, on loan from the Spencer Art Reference Library of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City.  This newly assembled, significant collection consists of 31  illuminated manuscripts and leaves from early printed books, both religious and secular. Most of the pages date from the 15th century, but the collection includes a liturgical text from Italy dated to the early 12th century.  The manuscripts have been privately held until very recently, and Monmouth College is pleased to be able to make them available to the public in western Illinois.

The exhibit will open on Thursday, October 11, 2013 in Gallery 203 of Hewes Library and will remain open to the public until Tuesday, November 26, 2013.  On Sunday, October 27, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. in the second floor foyer of the library, Bro. Thomas Sullivan, O.S.B., of Conception Abbey in Conception, Missouri, will give a gallery talk on the collection.  Monmouth College student docents will also be available for tours for individuals and school groups by prior appointment from Monday, October 28 through Tuesday, November 26.  The exhibit is open for unguided visits during regular operating hours of the Hewes Library (for times, see http://library.monmouthcollege.edu ).  Admission is free.
