After-Worship Gathering - June 16, 2013
Working on a New Future
Ten people joined Pastor Charles and Janet Cunningham for the weekly after-worship gathering in the church library last Sunday. One could say that our theme is "working on a new future" and that we are called to "heal brokenness in the world." Like those in the early Christian Church, people are hurting because the world has broken them. Think about the many ways in which that is true.
Everyone has a picture in their mind of what the church should be and should be doing. The personal vision of many individuals evolves into the shared vision of the whole church, and then the particulars are figured out about how to do it.
In the after-worship discussions we will begin by talking about the strengths of the church, meeting first in a large group, and then breaking up into smaller groups to encourage everyone to speak.
The group discussed creative ways to get folks together to ask questions for the development of our future. Pastor Charles sees the congregation in terms of concentric circles, with the outer layers being those who have just recently left and might respond to personal invitation. An every-member visit campaign was discussed, with Pastor Charles being willing to call on people, but also willing congregants going out in groups of two to visit all members of the church. If people are going to come back, it will be because we are putting together a new future different from the past.
We want as many people involved in the discussion groups as possible, so in order for people to access a discussion group, they will be offered at a variety of days and times: Wednesday evenings at 5:15 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. and Tuesdays or Thursdays at 10:00 a.m. Two other rules: the meetings will have a clear ending time and someone in the group will be a recorder, so that there will be a record to refer to at later meetings so that the ideas expressed can be built upon.

JUNE MISSION FOCUS - TEDDY BEAR CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER
Gary and Denise Pullen wish to express their thanks to Faith UP Church for allowing them to rent the former C. E. wing for the past 24 years and for the love and support this congregation has blessed them with.
Teddy Bear Child Development Center & Preschool is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization. As a United Way agency, they provide a valuable service to our community. Being a non-profit organization means just that. There's never any money left over at the end of each month. After 24 years, items wear out and need replaced. Prices on everything keep going up.
If you would like to make a donation to TBCDC, you may designate TBCDC on your pew envelope (or check) this Sunday, June 23, or next Sunday, June 30. Your old cell phones, ink jet cartidges, and prayers are also needed.

PW Annual Meeting and Salad Supper - TONIGHT
The Presbyterian Women's annual salad supper and business meeting will be held on Thursday evening, June 20th, at 6:00 p.m. in the Social Hall of the church. Jan Sprout, Executive Director of Jamieson Community Center, will be the guest speaker. All women and friends of the church are invited to attend. Guests are welcome.
The business meeting will follow Jan Sprout's presentation. Agenda items will include dedication of the Birthday Offering, a memorial service, and presentation of proposed changes to the Constitution of the Association of Presbyterian Women of Faith United Presbyterian Church of Monmouth, Illinois. There has been a need for changes to be made to the constitution for several years. This year's nominating committee has not been able to obtain a slate of officers for nomination. Therefore, the Coordinating Team has discussed making changes to the constitution to make it more relevant to the lives of the members of our congregation. Input will be welcome. To receive a copy of the proposed constitution by email, please email Sharon Graham at sjgraham6227@yahoo.com.
Attendees are asked to bring a salad to share and their own table service. Beverages will be provided.

Save the Date! - June 30
The Deacons are busy planning a special birthday party on Sunday, June 30, during the coffee hour immediately following worship, to honor our wisest and most experienced members 85+ years young.
We want to make sure we don't miss anybody! If you are new to the 85 and over milestone group (or know someone who is), please call the church office so that you may be added to the invitation list. Also, if you have failed to get an invite in previous years and should have been included (or know someone who has), please let us know. So many of you wear your age so well - nobody has a clue - so please forgive us if we thought you were much younger and help set us straight!
- Getting older is simply the price we pay for living a long time! -

Bible School June 24 - 28
I will be at Faith before and after church this Sunday to meet with anyone interested in helping this year. Right now I especially need people of any age willing to paint and cut out cardboard props and make decorations.
As part of the international flavor of this fun fair, children will learn about a different country every day. England, Australia, Mexico, Japan and Zimbabwe are the countries covered. We need to create a small display for each country. The VBS books have ideas and simple backgrounds for each country. If a couple of people would be interested in organizing this, I would really appreciate it!
The donation sign-up was posted last Sunday. The following donations are needed for snack time (specific amounts and details are on the sign-up sheet): Cool Whip, dried cranberries, raisins, graham crackers, white frosting, colored sprinkles, fresh strawberries, gold fish crackers, mini pretzels, honey graham cereal, plain M&Ms, string cheese, tortilla shells, grated cheddar or Monterrey cheese, baggies, napkins, small snack plates, 7 oz cups. Some categories may have been filled, so please re-check each week.

Congratulations
Chloe Larson, along with three other area girls, Carolyn King, Tori Babcock, and Kim Jensen, have been sponsored by the Marion B. Fletcher Auxiliary Unit #136 of Monmouth to attend Illini Girl's State at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston June 16-22.
The Department of Illinois American Legion Auxiliary has sponsored Illini Girl's State for 72 years. It is a simulation patterned after the State of Illinois and follows their governmental procedures as closely as possible. During the week the girls, all rising high school seniors, will be experiencing how Illinois government functions, from the two-party system to party caucuses & conventions, holding primary and general elections, and electing city, county, and state officials. In addition, they will do the work of legislators--introducing, debating, and passing bills. They will become familiarized with not only the legislative branch of state government, but also the executive and judicial branches. They will learn about enforcing laws and hold mock trials as part of their experience. When the girls return they will attend an Auxiliary meeting and make a report on what they have learned.
So, if you want to know what's going on in Illinois government these days, just ask Chloe!
