The office number at the church is 734-5129.

Summer Worship Hours

The time is fast approaching when we need to announce the summer hours.  I plan for the Session to set the time and the date at the next regular meeting (May 28).  I understand that for a while in the past, the summer worship was at 9:30 a.m. Last year the experiment time was 10:30 a.m. If you feel strongly one way or the other, please let one of the Session members know your preference.  June 2 worship will remain at 10:30 a.m.

Blessings,
Pastor Charles

Congregational Meeting

The Session of Faith United Presbyterian Church has called a Special Congregational Meeting for 10:30 a.m. at the start of worship on Sunday, May 19 for the purpose of electing one ruling elder to fill a vacancy on the Session for the class of 2014.  The Nominating Committee has placed the name of Brad Larson in nomination for this office.  The floor will be open for other nominations, but please obtain the consent of any person you wish to nominate prior to the meeting.  Pastor Charles Cunningham will moderate the meeting.

As you know, Rob Hale '14 and his family are moving to Kentucky shortly, and Rob has had to resign from Session.  We thank him for his years of service to our church.

From the Presbytery of Great Rivers:

Pastor Nominating Committee (PNC) Training

Calling all congregations in a search for a new pastor (and there are a lot of you in Great Rivers right now!)  The Committee on Ministry is hosting two workshops for you as you move toward the call to a new pastor. Members of your Pastor Nominating Committee and session are welcome. If you have not yet elected a Pastor Nominating Committee, that is no problem. Send session members and they will be able to pass the information along. The first workshop will be from 2:30 -5:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 19 at the First Presbyterian Church in Danvers. The second one will be Sunday, June 23 from 2:30-5:00 at the First Presbyterian Church of Galesburg.

Please RSVP to Patti Parrish with the number of people who will be attending from your church.  pparrish@greatriverspby.org

Pentecost Offering

On Sunday, May 19 we will be taking the Pentecost Offering. The causes supported by the Offering are the creation of opportunities for our most precious resources, our children, youth, and young adults.

This year, nearly 5,000 youth will come together at Purdue University for the Presbyterian Youth Triennium, an event fostering the development of a lifelong relationship with Christ and the Presby-
terian Church (U.S.A.).

This year marks the expansion of the Young Adult Volunteer program, which enables young adults to experience firsthand the work of a missional church while providing a critical experience (both education and spiritual) in the process. You may recall that Anni Krummel, who served as our guest preacher on April 21, traveled to Mombasa, Kenya, as part of the Young Adult Volunteer program in 2006.

In addition, 40 percent of the gifts to the Pentecost Offering stay with congregations for their youth programming. Last year our congregation collected $237.  Let's see if we can surpass this goal this year.

Christian Education

Sunday School 9:15 a.m.  for preschool through Jr and Sr High.

Adult Bible Study - Meets at 9:15 a.m. on Sunday mornings in the Bride's Room (across from the chapel).  Joyce Hagemann leads the class using the NIV Bible Study series.  Copies of the lessons are available in the grey cabinet in the Bride's Room.  All adults welcome.  May 19 will be the final session for this semester.

Faith & Life Class - Meets 9:15 a.m. Sunday mornings in the Social Hall.  Tom Best continues to lead the class through May 19th on the history of American Abolitionism pre-Civil War.   Class discussion revolves around segments of a PBS film on the subject, and special attention will be given to the role of Christian thought in shaping the movement.

Vacation Bible School - 9:30 a.m. to 12 noon M-F on June 24 through 28.  Ann Phelps, Director.

May 19 will be the last day of Sunday School
until it resumes in the fall!

Isabel Circle - May 23

Members and friends of Isabel Circle will meet at the church at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 23, 2013.  Mary Distin will serve as hostess.  All women are welcome to attend for Bible study and fellowship.

Mary Distin will facilitate Lesson Seven titled "The Children", from the 2012-2013 Horizons Bible Study.  Scripture readings are from 1 John 2:1-15, 2:29 - 3:10 and 5:1-21.  "See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are." (1 John 3:1a)

In this lesson we read that "no other verse summarizes the themes of identity and community better than this one."  We are the children of God's household.

As God's children, we are nurtured and nourished by the Holy Spirit in the pursuit of righteousness.  We are taught to avoid sin and to love one another.  In 1 John, as opposed to Roman literature of the time, references to actual children are positive.  In focusing on children, actually or metaphorically, in terms of the children of God, the author of 1 John emphasizes God's focus on "the least of these."  Children and childlike innocence are important to the human household and to the divine household.

Lesson Seven explores how we can "understand and embrace (our) roles as children of God."

Promise Walk Benefit Lindsay Murdock

The Thumbs Up for Lindsay team raised a total of $2,475 so far for the Promise Walk which was held last Saturday to raise money for the Preeclampsia Awareness Foundation. This was way over their goal of $500, so thank you to everyone who contributed!

To follow Lindsay's progress on CaringBridge.org, Jake has made it easier to access the site by eliminating the site password requirement, so that now all you need to do is to create your own username and password at www.caringbridge.org/visit/lindsaymurdock. You can set up your account to get notifications about new Journal postings either by email or by text. There is an adorable photo of 10-1/2-month-old Easton, and boy, does he have the curls! Plus, Jake has a brand-new post (April 30), giving a run-down on Lindsay's progress in a number of areas. She's doing remarkably well.
