New survey shows impact of values on immigration support and importance of pivoting to secondary frames
No message is an island. Most advocacy happens in a contested space with frames and counter frames flying. Nowhere is that more evident in current public discourse than on the topic of Immigration!
In a new survey experiment of 8000 registered voters, FrameWorks explores how various values frames interact - with what consequences for pro-immigration policies and attitudes. Sponsored by the MacArthur Foundation, this innovative design allows advocates to play out the frame contest and to be more strategic in orchestrating their rebuttals. The conclusion from "DON'T STAY ON MESSAGE" is that immigration advocates lose ground when they stay on message. Pivoting to secondary frames is key if they are to weather assaults from anti-immigration frames. Find the executive summary at our website. This report is part of a year-long suite of qualitative and quantitative research designed to document how people think about immigration and proposed reforms and how advocates and experts can best reframe the discussion.
