DRIVE TEXAS - An All-New Online Highway Information Map

In an effort to give travelers easier access to pertinent road condition reports, the Texas Department of Transportation has launched DRIVE TEXAS, a new mobile friendly Highway Conditions map. Launched June 20th, Drive Texas, at www.drivetexas.org, displays statewide conditions affecting travel, including construction, closures, accidents and live weather feeds to give drivers the tools they need to check travel conditions before they hit the road.

The mobile-friendly site also allows travelers to find a nearby Safety Rest Area or Texas Travel Information Center. In Select Cities, they also can view traffic camera images, messages posted on dynamic message signs and more detailed information for the traveling public. Drive Texas offers a more modern, robust, user-friendly interface that inputs information right at users' fingertips in an easy-to-find format. The application also may be accessed by clicking on the "Highway Conditions" link on the www.txdot.gov home page.

RecipeArticleRECIPE: Firecrackers

Here's a tasty dessert recipe if you want a treat! It's very simple to make and has few ingredients (so you don't have to fill up your RV!). Check here next month for another great recipe. Bon appetite!

Firecrackers
  • 1 box saltine crackers
  • 1 1/3 cups canola oil (no substitutions)
  • 2 Tablespoons crushed red pepper seasoning
  • 1 package dry ranch salad dressing mix
  1. In a small mixing bowl, mix-oil and crushed red pepper seasoning. Stir and let set for 1 minute.
  2. Add package of dry ranch salad dressing mix to the oil mixture. Stir until well blended.
  3. Carefully put all crackers into a large airtight container. Pour or spoon the oil mixture over the crackers.
  4. Seal the container with lid and gently flip the container over three times to let the oil mixture cover all of the crackers. Set the timer for ten minutes.
  5. Turn the container over three more times; let set for another ten minutes. Repeat this step every ten minutes for an hour.
  6. After an hour crackers are ready to serve. Store crackers in an airtight container or plastic bag.

Yields: Approximately one hundred crackers.

TechTipTECH TIP: Recycling Your RV's Dead Battery

Recycling Your RV's Dead Battery

Have you ever tried to get rid of a dead battery? Sometimes a dealer will take them, and sometimes he won't. Few landfills accept them anymore, and it's just not responsible to dump them wherever you may find it convenient. So, what's a dead-battery owner supposed to do?

In a move intended to promote recycling, K-Mart stores recently announced that they will buy any and all old lead/acid batteries for $1 each. Just contact a representative at the customer service counter in the store. While you won't get rich from the sale, you'll at least have the comfort of knowing you've contributed to a noble recycling effort. Old batteries are melted down and used to manufacture new ones.
