"The time is always right to do the right thing."

-Martin Luther King, Jr.

Ring in the New Year by recycling the old!

The holidays are behind us-a time of enjoying family and sharing in gift-giving traditions.  The old saying comes to mind, "in with the new and out with the old."  What then do you do with your old sweaters, jeans or bathroom towels, especially if you've replaced them with new?  The answer is RECYCLE!

The Plymouth Public Schools has partnered with Bay State Textiles in an ongoing fundraiser and solution to the problem of textile waste.  More than 520 MILLION pounds of usable textiles - including clothing, footwear, towels, bedding and other fabric-based products - are sent to landfills and incinerators in Massachusetts each year-of which 95% could be recycled.  Bay State Textiles has placed a donation box outside of each school in Plymouth.

The focus of the program is to spread awareness to the problem of textile waste, educate about items acceptable for textile recycling while generating revenue for the schools.  Bay State Textiles pays a rebate of $100 per ton for the textiles collected.  Not only do the schools and PTA's generate needed revenue, the program also helps to keep the trash tipping fees down in town.  Textile recycling needs to become as familiar and as easy to perform as bottle, can, and paper recycling.  Having the boxes outside of the schools allows for 24/7 access to the community.

Bay State Textiles will take it all: the good, the bad and the ugly, clothing, shoes, pocketbooks, household linens, stuffed animals and accessories.  They only ask that items be dry and reasonably clean.  Place your unwanted items in a plastic bag to keep the textiles clean and dry on their journey to a new life.

Give your throw-outs a second life.  85% of reclaimed textiles will be reused, and what can't be will be broken down into wiping rags or fibers for insulation, carpet padding, etc. Your unwanted clothes, shoes and household linens are too good for the trash!  For more information visit:  baystatetextiles.com. Remember to Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

Club Invention

Club Invention is coming to Plymouth this summer!  This program will run for just one action-packed week only.  Each day, children will work in teams as they rotate between four fun thematic modules.  Each module brings new challenges to build upon what was learned the previous day.  Your child will:
-collaborate to build prototypes, following the example of National Inventors Hall of Fame inductees;
-upcycle and re-engineer with gears and gadgets, developing critical-thinking skills and creativity; and
-explore STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) enrichment, motivating a group to develop solutions to real-world problems.

The program will run for one week only at PCIS, July 7-11, 2014, from 9:00 am - 3:30 pm each day.  Students entering grades 1-6 are eligible.  The cost of this program is $245.

Penny Wars

The Student Council is sponsoring its annual Penny War competition between the three academic floors. This is a community service fundraiser. Pennies and dollars count positively towards a floor's total and silver coins count negatively when dropped in other floors' containers. Collections will continue through the end of January. All donations will be given to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in memory of Emily Swartz, a student who attended Indian Brook Elementary School.

Holiday Community Service Project

Art students at Plymouth South Middle School hoped to make the holiday hospitalization of patients at our local Jordan Hospital (now Beth Israel Deaconess at Plymouth) a little cheerier at dinner time with Christmas cards placed on trays.  Students made origami Santas and Christmas trees, glued those to cards, and wrote messages to patients.  Students mentioned that some people might be very happy to be in the hospital for Christmas if they were having new babies!  Students from all four grades were eager to participate in this project.

Sixth grade art students made placemats of woven paper that had been painted with holiday colors and presented those to the hospital hoping that the placemats might brighten the dinner trays of employees of the hospital who were kind enough to work on Christmas Day.

Plymouth North High School and Ithacappella Play To A Packed House

On Tuesday evening, the VPA Department presented a night of a cappella to a sold out audience in North's Performing Arts Center.  The concert featured Ithacappella, Ithaca College's all-male a cappella group, who had performed there last year to rave reviews and was greeted by another incredibly enthusiastic audience this week.  Joining Ithacappella were PNHS's three a cappella groups; Northern Lights, Girl Treble and Menergy.

This is a picture of Northern Lights and Ithacappella combining for an encore at the end of the concert.

Winter Sports Captain's Lunch

On Tuesday, January 14th the North and South athletic departments hosted their annual Winter Sports Captain's Lunch.  In attendance were all the winter sports captains, coaches, and administration from both high schools and central office.  The guest speaker was former Patriot Tony Collins, who delivered a very inspiring message to the student athletes about his road to becoming a professional athlete stressing the importance of making good choices and putting time into their academics.

Tony spent nine seasons in the NFL with the New England Patriots and Miami Dolphins. Tony attended East Carolina University until he was selected in the second round of the NFL Draft in 1981.  Although Tony did not complete his undergraduate degree during his initial time at East Carolina, realizing the value of an education, he has since gone back to school to pursue his bachelor's degree in communications.  Through his experience as a parent of eight and his charitable work with the "Tony Collins Foundation," Tony has developed a deep appreciation for the advantages athletics and academics can provide and hopes to spread that message to families around the country.

The G & G/PSHS Female Athlete of-the-Week is senior Holly Sessler.  During January 7th's game Sessler won the High Jump and was part of the winning 4x400 team against Dennis-Yarmouth.  She was also on 3 of Plymouth South's 4 teams that placed on January 11th at the State Relays.  This included the school record setting 4x50 shuttle hurdle relay team that broke the old record of 32.06 by more than half a second in 31.54.  Great work, Holly!  Congratulations!  The G & G/PSHS Male Athlete of-the-Week is junior Quentin Parsons.  During the Boston Holiday Challenge Parsons ran a personal best time of 1:32.9 in the 600.  He has now dropped 9 seconds off his best time last season.  Nice job!  Congratulations Quentin!

The male acappella group "Ithacapella" from Ithaca College entertained Plymouth South High students during lunches on Tuesday.  They were promoting their performance held that night at Plymouth North.  It was a huge success and sold out by the start of the performance.  Many thanks to the VPA department for bringing them to Plymouth for the second year in a row.  Check out their website www.ithacapella.com to read the story of this amazing group of student performers.
