Introducing Voyager Express

Over the past 5 years, the Plymouth Public Schools has sent out a weekly newsletter. We've also released the first edition (Spring/ Summer) of the Plymouth Voyager, a magazine intended to highlight in-depth news from around the district. I have decided to integrate the Friday newsletter, formerly known as Friday Notes, as a sister publication of the Plymouth Voyager and reintroduce it as the - Voyager Express. Please Enjoy.
Weekly Quote

"Too often we underestimate the power of a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around."

Science News
Club Invention is coming to Plymouth this summer!  This program will run for just one action-packed week only.  Each day, children will work in teams as they rotate between four fun thematic modules.  Each module brings new challenges to build upon what was learned the previous day.  Your child will:
-collaborate to build prototypes, following the example of National Inventors Hall of Fame inductees;
-upcycle and re-engineer with gears and gadgets, developing critical-thinking skills and creativity; and
-explore STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) enrichment, motivating a group to develop solutions to real-world problems.

The program will run for one week only at PCIS, July 7-11, 2014, from 9:00 am - 3:30 pm each day.  Students entering grades 1-6 are eligible.  The cost of this program is $245.

On Dec. 14th and 15th, the Federal Furnace Treble Chorus will perform with the Plymouth Philharmonic Orchestra at their annual Holiday Pops Concert. One of the songs that they will sing, "Unending Flame" is a beautiful piece of music that celebrates the beauty and joy of the Hanukkah season. The chorus was thrilled to Skype with the composer of the piece at their rehearsal this week. First, students sang a section of the piece and Mr. Carey gave a few constructive pointers about how to improve their performance. Singers were a bit nervous, but Mr. Carey quickly made them comfortable with his positive feedback. Students asked Mr. Carey many questions about his life. They wondered what he did in his spare time, where he was born, and how he became a composer.  Students asked him questions about how he got his inspiration to compose "Unending Flame" and how long it took to write. The students at Federal Furnace are grateful to Mr. Paul Carey for spending some time with us and making our rehearsal so meaningful and fun!

Indian Brook Elementary School News

Indian Brook News

On Monday November 25 one hundred and twenty 4th graders from Indian Brook snuggled up with pillows, blankets, and their favorite books for an entire day of reading.  The day was dedicated to the children of the Philippines who lost their homes, schools, and towns because of Typhoon Haiyan.  The week before the Read-A-Thon IBES 4th graders collected pledges from parents, relative, and friends who sponsored students a flat donation or an amount of money per page read.  When all the money was collected they had raised an amazing $3000.00!!!  All the money will be donated to UNICEF Philippines specifically earmarked for the children.  Congratulations 4th graders you should be very proud of your efforts.

Sarah Morton Comes to Life

Monday morning, Sarah Morton's Day by Kate Waters came to life as Ella Atchison was transformed from her 2013 self to a Pilgrim girl from 1627. Ella is a volunteer at Plimoth Plantation. Ella was assisted by her parents as she gradually dressed in shift, skirt, waistcoat, coif, apron, pocket, hat and shoes. Ella was able to answer her classmate's questions about daily life. She also shared her clay marbles and demonstrated how to play this Pilgrim game. Mr. Atchison has been a blacksmith at Plimoth Plantation for years and was able to clarify some concepts from Waters' book. Many children in Room 23 were ready to sign up to volunteer after Ella's demonstration!

A Traditional Visit

South Elementary was fortunate to continue a Thanksgiving tradition involving a visit from the PSHS Football Team, Cheerleaders and Dance Team Members on Monday.  The PSHS students read to many classrooms and even stayed around to work with some of our students.  Here at South Elementary, these talented high school students are considered to be "famous superstars" so some autographs were even given out to many of our aspiring elementary students.  Miss Mary's preschool really enjoyed spending time with these outstanding high school students!

ART SHOW AT THE LIFECARE CENTER

The students of South Elementary School created Veterans' Day artwork that was displayed at the LifeCare Center in Plymouth. Student artwork was selected for display to celebrate and honor our Veterans. The show was organized and maintained by Mrs. Cristani, our art teacher.

Hedge Elementary News
Students and staff gathered together last Wednesday to celebrate Thanksgiving as one large Hedge School family. The gymnasium was converted into  a large dinning room with rows of decorative tables. Under the direction of chefs Mr. Smith and Hedge dad Tim Cleland, retired staff worked as prep cooks in the kitchen to prepare the feast. The entire staff in addition to Superintendent Dr. Maestas, served the children this delicious sit down meal. The event included a head table for honored guest and performances by first and fifth grade groups. The lovely event concluded with a Thanksgiving story read by Principal Wilson.

West Elementary News
Pod 1 at West Elementary gave thanks by giving back to the community.  To create their bulletin board for November, students were asked to bring in canned goods and dry/non perishable items that would be donated to a local food pantry. For each item a student brought in, they got a feather to decorate as they wished which would then be placed all around a roly-poly turkey.  The students exceeded all expectations and brought in enough canned goods to fill multiple boxes and create plumage 3 rows deep for our turkey.  Way to go Pod 1!  You certainly understand the meaning of Thanks and Giving.

Cold Spring Elementary School News
Students in Mrs. Williams' fifth grade class practiced their persuasive writing skills this week.  Each student "dressed" a paper turkey so that it was disguised as something or someone else.  They then wrote a persuasive essay to convince others that they are indeed not a turkey, and should not be stuffed for Thanksgiving.  Some of the disguises included Santa Claus, a Red Sox player, a kangaroo, ghost. a superhero and others.  Students enjoyed this piece of creative writing!

Federal Furnace Elementary News

In late November the Federal Furnace fifth graders displayed their talents in the 30th Annual Gym Show! This show is unique each and every year and is brought to us by our very talented team of specialist teachers: Kathy McMinn, Music; Lisa Whynott, Art, and Chris Pratt Gym. Chris Pratt started the show, and this was her 30th year facilitating it--thank you Mrs. Pratt!

In honor of Thanksgiving last week, the fifth grade staff facilitated a special luncheon. They included the fourth grade this year too, as they share a lunch period. Thanks to Mr. Pinto for cooking some of the food, and the entire team for coordinating a unique lunchtime experience for our students! The staff enjoyed the leftovers as well.

Federal Furnace Elementary School teamed up with Plymouth's DPW Water Department to help educate students on different tools and how they are used. Fifth grade students from Mr. Pinto and Mrs. Greenwood's classes enjoyed a hands on experience at their annual Tool Show. Using the Plymouth's DPW Water Department as a resource helped prepare students to meet the Massachusetts state standards in Science and Technology/Engineering.

Manomet Elementary School News
Manomet 5th graders gathered along a very, very long table to enjoy a "Thanksgiving" lunch with principal, Dr. Fraine, Mrs. Kotce (secretary), Mrs. Cavicchi and Mrs. Hatch (5th grade teachers), Mr. Flattery (custodian), Mrs. Manfredi (Title One Director), and Mrs. Steele (MSN teacher).

Manomet Elementary conducted its Annual Wellness Fair recently. Stations were set up throughout the school which taught a variety of health topics by hands on experiences, such as: exercising through yoga and dance, sugary drinks, oral hygiene, ambulance care, fire safety, bike safety and more!

Mrs. Richard from Jordan Hospital grabs students' attention by displaying drink cups with accurate amounts of sugar present in popular drinks. The kids were dismayed to see just how much sugar they may be consuming.

Mrs. Rich shows the kids how exercise can be fun with some current dance moves!

A representative from Polished brought huge props to excite the kids to learn about the importance of proper brushing and flossing!

Mrs. Yergation shows how yoga can be a powerful yet calming exercise routine.

Officer Kurt Saunders explains the rules of the road during his bike safety presentation.

Third graders at Manomet Elementary presented handcrafted dioramas to classes and family members. The students displayed their knowledge of their chosen habitats by talking to their visitors while showing them their creative displays. The dioramas included the following habitats: rainforests, woodlands, deserts, grasslands, as well as, freshwater and saltwater systems.

this Saturday
for the big game! The students at Manomet Elementary enjoyed another wonderful visit from the team and cheerleading squad, as they read some favorite books to students here of all grade levels. The students love to have the "big" kids come and spend time in their classrooms and the staff is always amazed at how they grow up so quickly!

PCIS News

PCIS Students Skype with Students in Plymouth, UK

Mrs. Farrell's 6th grade Visual Art students at PCIS just finished creating successful postcards that highlighted Plymouth, MA.  Each student needed to create a postcard that would persuade their viewer to want to visit Plymouth, MA through imagery that is eye catching as well as informative. While students learned to correctly pair imagery and text they were informed of the career in the Graphic Arts. Students struggled with keeping their message simple and clear, by focusing on one main idea and text to match. One of the specifications for this project was, "If this postcard was sent to a student in Plymouth, UK would they feel persuaded to visit Plymouth, MA based on your imagery and text?"

After the postcards were completed, Mrs. Farrell informed her 6th grade classes that their postcards went on a plane to the United Kingdom for students to view. They were also told that they would be involved in a Skype session with these students.

When the day finally came for the Skype session between these two schools, students at PCIS one by one held their artwork up to the camera while students in Plymouth, UK had to answer the question, "After looking at and reading about this postcard are you now persuaded to visit Plymouth, MA?"  Students both in America and the United Kingdom thought this was a lot of fun and look forward to sharing more artwork with each other in the future.  Students also had time to ask questions about culture, art, technology, and entertainment.

Students and staff involved walked away learning more about an area of the world that was easily accessible through Skype. This experience allowed students at PCIS to meet and understand a little bit more about the students in Plymouth, UK.

The learning and fun doesn't end here.  These students will continue to work on artwork to share and possibly send in the mail to each other.  If time allows, we may even be able to have another Skype session.

On Wednesday, December 4th, the PSMS 6th graders attended a K9 demonstration by the Plymouth Police Department.  Officer Glowka, along with his K9 "Shirley", displayed Shirley's abilities for detecting narcotics with staff and students participating in the activity.  Officer Glowka explained Shirley's abilities and how she performs her duties while partnered with him.  An extensive question and answer period followed and all appeared to have a great time learning about the Police Department's K9 program.

Seas and Greetings Frosty Plymouth!

The PSMS Decorating Club decorated a tree at the Council on Aging this week.  The tree has all kinds of representations of our town: garlands of popcorn and cranberries to show off our state fruit, ropes to represent Plymouth Cordage, pictures of schools, churches, temples, museums, pilgrims, seagulls, Wampanoags, turkeys, and blue candy canes for our beautiful blue Atlantic.

The Decorating club consists of ten girls from 5th through 8th grades: Bryce Cavicchi, Colleen Egan, Olivia Halpin, Kayla Halpin, Alissa Kane, Kayleigh Kearney, Michelina Larson, Katie Mullen, Paige Simard, and Rose Vallas.

The council has a very special winter Gala this Friday, and now our seniors can "rock around the Christmas tree" complete with a small version of our Plymouth Rock in place!

French Exchange
The first half of the French Exchange came to a conclusion last evening at Logan airport in Boston. Our friends from France arrived on Sunday, November 24th and the nervous greetings exchanged by the 20 Plymouth students and 21 students from Valbonne had already begun to transform into comfortable smiles and excitement by the beginning of the school day on Monday. All 41 students attended a Welcome breakfast in the North cafeteria and were greeted by Ms. McSweeney and the administrative team at North, as well as by Mr. Campbell.

The French students shadowed their American partners throughout the day on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and had the opportunity to tour the building. They were received most graciously by all teachers and staff and many participated fully in classes, even taking exams in some cases and singing with the chorus in others. Many of the French students participated in Spirit Week, dressing in pajamas on Monday, Hawaiian shirts on Tuesday, and wearing blue and white on Wednesday. The students and teachers were in awe of our Thanksgiving pep-rally and one student said, "It's like being in a movie!".

Most of the students attended the Thanksgiving Day football game at South and had the full New England experience, including some frigid temperatures. The students spent Thursday, Friday, Saturday and most of Sunday with their host families and most everyone had the opportunity to visit sites ranging from the Freedom Trail, Faneuil Hall, Frog Pond, Copley Plaza and Harvard Square in Boston, Plimoth Plantation and the Mayflower, the Plymouth waterfront and the Braintree mall. Students and host families arranged some group outings to go bowling, play laser tag and go to the movies. On Saturday, the French students and their host families attended a Farewell brunch at North with some excellent potluck dishes contributed by each host family. One set of parents brought a crepe griddle to the brunch and made delicious crepes for everyone! A couple of the other host parents put together some souvenir gift bags for the French students which included Plymouth t-shirts, a "1620" rock, typical American candy, photos of Plymouth, and a Christmas ornament signed by all of the Plymouth students and French teachers.

Throughout the brunch and at the airport on Sunday, parents were heard commenting on how wonderful the experience had been and how well the French students had assimilated into their families. They reported that the students were happy to participate in everything the family did, from preparing dishes for Thanksgiving to helping clean up after meals. One mother said that her only complaint was that it was too short. Many host parents and students from Plymouth and Valbonne exchanged tearful goodbyes last evening in the airport. Students and parents alike were amazed at the close relationship that had been formed after just one short week.

The hosting experience was a true success! Our students have formed some excellent relationships and shared in authentic cultural experiences. The students will stay in touch at least through April, when our group will travel to Valbonne to stay with the families of the students we hosted. Many will likely have formed relationships that will last even longer and will utilize the various technologies that make staying in touch quite easy.

Thank you for helping to make this opportunity possible for our students! The Plymouth host families must also be thanked for providing such welcoming homes and arranging some wonderful experiences for the French students. It has been an incredible experience for us all!

Northern Lights A Cappella  Plymouth North's A Cappella group "Northern Lights", performed at an afternoon concert for the Council on Aging as a way of giving back to the community. One local senior citizen was so excited by the performance that she hugged the group after each number.

If you are interested in seeing Northern Lights A Cappella, they will be performing Friday, December 6th, 7:00 p.m. at 1749 Courthouse as part of the Plymouth's Tree Lighting Ceremony. They will also be performing at the "PNHS Winter Concert", Thursday, December 12th at Plymouth North High School.

PNHS Math Team  Wearing their new shirts, the PNHS Math Team placed second at the SMML in Middleboro.

Plymouth North Physical Education

The start of winter sports inevitably leads to a tired and sore student body as many of our students are adjusting to their new practice schedules and workout regiments. This week for Fun Fitness Friday the Phys. Ed staff at North worked on a much needed component of fitness: flexibility. With much attention given to the more obvious aspects of muscular strength and cardiovascular endurance, it is easy to undermine the importance of a proper stretching routine. On Friday, students began class with a 4-5 minute jog in order to warm up and loosen their muscles followed by 4-5 minutes of structured group stretching. We discussed the reasons that stretching is important for everyone, not just athletes, and demonstrated proper technique. Overall, it was a great (and much needed!) workout for all the students in PE!

On Tuesday, December 3, 2013, the Metalfab/Welding class of 2014 visited the Local 537 Pipefitters Union.  The students met with training coordinator Timothy Gilligan, who explained the basic education standards of a certified pipefitters training schedule.  The students then proceeded to the welding booths to demonstrate their talents.  Everyone at the Pipefitters Union was very impressed with the quality of the students from Plymouth South High School and invited all of the students to return to the Union for possible employment after graduation.

In conjunction with the Tutoring Program run by National Honor Society in the IMC on Tuesdays and Thursdays, we will be launching the PSHS Writing Center.  The Writing Center is designed to provide assistance to all students on their written assignments (both formal and informal).  Students may utilize the Writing Center for assistance in (not limited to below)

1) Proofreading   2) Thesis Development    3) Organization and Structural Problems

Similar to the Tutoring Program, there will be signs at the tables in the IMC to show where students can seek out help if needed.  The Writing Center will begin providing services after Thanksgiving Break.  Many colleges provide this service for its students and we hope to see students take advantage of this, especially within the Freshman Academies. Attached with this email is a flyer included that gives more specifics for you to share with your students.  Please do not hesitate to see Mr. Sorensen or Mr. Fust with any questions.

The short week before Thanksgiving, the student council worked very hard filling and organizing donated food into baskets that were picked up by needy families at PSHS...  The Monte Christo restaurant in Manomet donated and delivered ready to "go" the baskets in the picture below.

Members of the football team, the dance team and the cheerleaders went on a field trip to local elementary schools to read to the students.  All the students seemed to enjoy have "big" people come to their room to read!!!
