Introducing Voyager Express
Over the past 5 years, the Plymouth Public Schools has sent out a weekly newsletter. We've also released the first edition (Spring/ Summer) of the Plymouth Voyager, a magazine intended to highlight in-depth news from around the district. I have decided to integrate the Friday newsletter, formerly known as Friday Notes, as a sister publication of the Plymouth Voyager and reintroduce it as the - Voyager Express. Please Enjoy.

On October 31st Federal Furnace fifth grade students from Mrs. Greenwood's and Mr. Pinto's classes went on their annual field trip to the historical Burial Hill Cemetery and 1749 Court House in Downtown Plymouth. On Burial Hill, they participated in a historical scavenger hunt and enjoyed tales told by Mrs. Greenwood about the King Philip's War and of the Plymouth Harbor shipwreck of the Benedict Arnold. Inside the 1749 Court House, students looked at artifacts of Plymouth's past. Upstairs in the Court House's replica of an old colonial courtroom, students performed a reenactment of a colonial trial. Later in the afternoon the classes walked past the Jenny Grist Mill and enjoyed their lunch at Brewster Gardens.

Ms. Friedmann's students create a musical pumpkin patch. Learning About the Pilgrims and Wampanoag Through Primary Sources
Students in Miss Learning and Mr. Young's third grade classes this week began their unit on the Pilgrims and Wampanoags by studying artifacts that both groups used almost 400 years ago. Small groups of students were handed baskets filled with artifacts such as feathers, rope, arrows, squash, fur, leather, corn, salt, buttons, cranberries, and the Mayflower Compact. Students were given very little guidance in determining and recording the name of the artifact, what it was made of, and what it may have been used for.
From the minute the baskets were placed on their desks, students were filled with excitement, sharing their observations, questions, connections, and theories about each object. "I loved trying to solve what each item was, it really made us have to think hard but it was still a lot of fun," explained Shaun, a third grader in Mr. Young's class. Many students were fascinated by the differences between the tools of today and those used by the Pilgrims and Wampanoag. "It was very interesting to learn about what items the Pilgrims and Wampanoag used in their daily lives," explained Matthew, a third grader in Miss Learning's class.

Each class will continue their study of the Pilgrims this month by learning about their reason for coming to America, researching, and reenacting, the voyage of the Mayflower, and taking a virtual field trip to Plimoth Plantation. These future lessons should continue to make learning about Massachusetts history educational and enjoyable. |

On Wednesday, November 13th, Mrs. De Santis' fourth grade class took part in a "Mystery Skype" with a third grade classroom in Navajo, Arizona.
"Mystery Skype was awesome because we learned a lot about Massachusetts and the other states beforehand." said Kayleigh, a student in Mrs. De Santis' class. "We first learned facts about our own state so we would be ready to answer questions from the other class. We reviewed the climate, region, neighboring states, time zone and famous landmarks of Massachusetts. Next we learned the location of all 50 states and which states were in each region. As a class, we practiced asking questions with a map in front of us. On the day of the Mystery Skype, we were nervous but excited. We had no idea which state they were from!"
Both classes enjoyed the Skype session and even had time at the end to ask some other questions. The students shared information about the weather, school size, class size, and the field trips that the kids participate in.
"We thought it was amazing that their class could drive to The Grand Canyon in just one hour! They thought it was cool that we could visit the Mayflower II replica and that the Pilgrims founded Plymouth," said Ella.
"It was interesting that it was 2:00pm here in Plymouth, but 11:00am in Arizona," added Tommy.
Both classes agreed that the Mystery Skype was something that they would like to do again. Many thanks go to Amy Kneller, South Elementary media specialist for organizing and coordinating the Skype session.

PCIS News

On November 14th the world celebrated World Diabetes Day. The type 1 diabetics from PCIS joined school nurse Debbie Day on a field trip to the State House in Boston. During their trip the students were able to see a State Proclamation that Governor Deval Patrick signed to name the week of November 10th 2013, as diabetes awareness week. The students had a chance to see the interior of many of the offices and the House Representatives Chamber where they had their picture taken. The students also had the opportunity to meet with the Senate Minority Leader Bruce Tarr, and tell him about their lives with type 1 diabetes. As the sun went down on the city of Boston that night the golden dome that is a trademark of the statehouse was was glowing blue to help raise diabetes awareness.
Veteran's Day activity
Holiday packages are being assembled by the family of one our students which will be sent to soldiers serving overseas. To honor these veterans, our students created heartfelt greeting cards to be included in those packages. It was a wonderful way for students to express their gratitude to our soldliers.
Mrs. Daly's classes conducted experiments in the science lab last week where they used air pressure to crush a soft drink can. To prepare for this lab, students identified a variable and formulated a hypothesis about the effects of that variable. The follow-up activity will be a formal lab report.

War of the Worlds Activity
After a night of candy-gathering and possibly even some tricks, students on the 3rd floor 8thgrade team were given a different kind of treat this past week. The 8th grade team of Hanley, Hall, Joyce, Runyon, Johnson, and Hanlon changed up the courses for the day to make room for a special "Team Day," where students learned about 1930s radio broadcasts and the panic resulting from Orson Wells' "War of the Worlds" broadcast from October 30, 1938. Students attended a presentation outlining the basic science and history behind radio waves and broadcast transmissions, detailing the early years of radio. Special attention was paid to the early radio shows and their connection to vaudeville plays, as well as how radio was essentially the sole source of information and entertainment for people of that time. The presentation also included segments on Foley artistry, which was the art of creating sound effects for radio (and later film), using everyday objects. The presentation ended with specific information regarding the "War of the Worlds" radio play produced by Wells, detailing how and why it lead to mass panic. Following the presentation, students engaged in a quick-write activity which asked them to imagine what it would be like to not be in possession of all of our current technology, relying solely on radio, newspapers, and second-hand sources for information. After a brief discussion of their answers, the students listened to the entire broadcast as it originally aired in 1938. During the broadcast, students used active listening strategies to write down and sketch out things they were hearing, so they could be used later in the day. Once the broadcast was completed, students had to complete a R.A.F.T assignment. R.A.F.T. stands for "Role Audience Format Topic." Students were assigned a specific Topic (the resulting panic) and asked to choose from a predetermined list of Roles they could assume as the author, an Audience they could be targeting, and a Format they would use, all while maintaining the selected topic of describing the panic. Once the writing assignment was completed, students were given a chance to flex their artistic skills and create a "movie poster" for the radio play. Artwork such as this allows students to better connect the auditory experience of the radio play with the more visual experiences with which they are more familiar. Lastly, students finished up the day with a short documentary video which further explained the mass panic resulting from the ill-timed radio broadcast, and the fallout that took place in the immediate aftermath.

PSHS Technology in the Classroom
by Jacqui Frongello, Technology Integration Specialist, PSHS
Integrating technology in to the classroom has become the goal of many teachers here at Plymouth South this school year. Teachers have been embracing and using technology with their students to promote hands on learning, collaboration and creativity.
Mrs. Kelly, Mrs. Troland and Mrs. Dias have all started the school year with the goal to use technology more with their students and try new ways of learning. Mrs. Troland, Mrs. Kelly and Mrs. Dias have been using the ipads to create ebooks and story videos allowing the students to strengthen and practice their verbal and writing skills in the language they are studying. Students have produced visually creative and academic driven works on the themes they have learned in the classroom in collaboration with the ipads.
The apps that were used were Explain Everything and Book Creator. Both of these apps allow students to be creative in their own way as well as reinforce and strengthen speaking and writing skills in the language of study.
