Introducing Voyager Express
Over the past 5 years, the Plymouth Public Schools has sent out a weekly newsletter. We've also released the first edition (Spring/ Summer) of the Plymouth Voyager, a magazine intended to highlight in-depth news from around the district. I have decided to integrate the Friday newsletter, formerly known as Friday Notes, as a sister publication of the Plymouth Voyager and reintroduce it as the - Voyager Express. Please Enjoy.

"At one magical instant in your early childhood, the page of a book-that string of confused, alien ciphers-shivered into meaning. Words spoke to you, gave up their secrets; at that moment, whole universes opened. You became, irrevocably, a reader."

Harvest Fair at Mount Pleasant Preschool
Mt Pleasant students and their families were treated to a perfect autumn day to meet new friends and their families. All families, new and returning, were invited to the 9th annual Harvest Fair sponsored by the Mt Pleasant Parent's Advisory Council. Rose and Vicki's Bakery from Manomet donated sugar cookies for the students to decorate. The Parent's Advisory Council provided healthy snacks, popcorn and various arts and crafts activities for all. Best of all, preschool students enjoyed coming to school on a Saturday to get in some extra playground time with their friends.
A group of students from Plymouth Community Intermediate School's Falcon Pride volunteered to help with face painting, parachute and various other activities. Their assistance made set up and clean up the easiest yet !

Amazing Applesauce
Children in Mrs. MacCune and Mrs. Hoagland's classes have been observing seasonal changes. As part of their unit on Fall, they made homemade applesauce using a simple machine.....a food mill. After reading numerous books, both fiction and non-fiction about apples, the children tried their hand at making this tasty treat. The children sketched the machine as they noticed how it operated. The children washed and chopped the apples. They simmered the apples in the classroom for many hours. After the apples were soft, the children put the peels, pulp, seeds and stems in a food mill where the sauce was squeezed through tiny holes into a large bowl. They then added sugar and cinnamon....yummy!

Mr. Williams has lunch with students on Fridays! On Friday, October 25th, he visited Correia Cafe in third grade, where he enjoyed coffee, tea, and a beautiful table setting. Thanks for hosting boys and girls, and Mrs. Correia!

This week I took a walk around our wonderful West School and the following sights abound. I saw Mr. Young's class' Flat Stanley Project, Mrs. Kotakas' " Art is Important" mural, Ms. Lungren's Jack-o-lantern adorned door, Ms. Reid's leaf creature creative writing and Mrs. Routhier's "Guess Who" writings. Take a peek at West World.
Ms. Cluff's Class Creates Spooky Stories Starring Mr. Williams' buddy "George". "George" is a special chair that Mr. Williams' shares with classes he has caught displaying appropriate hallway behaviors throughout the week. Ms. Cluff's class had the honor of hosting "George" for the week and he became the star of their spooky stories with his counterpart/alter ego "The Pumpkin". Kids read their stories with the glow of a flashlight illuminating their faces in the dark of the classroom.
The 2nd graders at West welcomed Mrs. Babini to Pod 2 last Friday to share a story, "Cake Girl," and talk about the service learning project they are involved in this year. Students are very excited to help make sure that children in difficult living situations will have birthday parties. West students in Mrs. Cormier's, Miss Reid's, Mr. Ozelius' and Mrs. Haynes' classes have partnered with Birthday Wishes, an organization that provides parties to children in shelters. In September, West donated balloons and candles. This month the collection boxes are overflowing with cake mixes and frosting. Students have participated in activities such as graphing, journaling and creating birthday cards.

Jessica Sherman and Ms. Shirley's morning class have joined classes for Big Friends/Little Friends. We met for the first time on Friday, October 25th. Mrs. Sherman's class practiced reading with fluency all week to prep. They also placed post-its to help the kindergarteners stop and predict (a skill that Ms. Shirley's class practiced in reading workshop)! Another post-it was placed for another question. After the fourth grade class read, Ms. Shirley's students got to show off their reading skills to their big friends. The students enjoyed meeting each other for the first time!

Third Graders from Manomet Elementary traveled to Cape Cod to visit the Brewster Natural History Museum. The field trip began with a looped hike across the marsh, lowland brush and beach. Along the way, a tour guide showed examples of native versus invasive plants. Students gained a better understanding of why preservation of marshland areas is extremely important to the water supply quality in our coastal areas.
After enjoying a picnic lunch, the students were allowed to explore the museum in small groups. A working beehive captured the attention of many. Native wildlife and fish were wonderful to view up close. Students particularly enjoyed the hands on activity, exploring the idea of biomimicry, by making mini paper helicopters which resemble the seed pods of oak trees.

Students in Miss Rosen's fourth grade class created pumpkin likenesses as part of their character unit. Students identified character traits from the book they chose and used evidence from the text to support their thinking. They also created blue prints for their pumpkin character and decorated them in school.

Bridgewater State University
Grade 8 students from Plymouth South Middle School recently visited Bridgewater State University. The trip was planned as part of the school's efforts to encourage college and career preparedness. In addition to having the chance to experience a day on an actual college campus, students had the chance to reflect on different characteristics they should consider when thinking about their own college experience, including academic majors, campus location, student population, costs, and financial aid.

PNHS Student Volunteers
Student volunteers helped out with the Hedge Elementary School Halloween Party, this past Friday night.
Eight Plymouth North High school students, representing the National Honor Society and the Interact Club joined in the fun.
North students stepped up to the plate with a level of maturity and dependability that is a credit to the school and the community. The night couldn't have been a success without them.
The Interact Club also put together a "Halloween Costume Drive" and sent over 30 Halloween costumes with Tim Lynch to donate to the Boys and Girls Club. Krystle Favreau, the club advisor, stated "I'm very happy with our early success as a club!"
