Introducing Voyager Express
Greetings!

Over the past 5 years, the Plymouth Public Schools has sent out a weekly newsletter. We've also released the first edition (Spring/ Summer) of the Plymouth Voyager, a magazine intended to highlight in-depth news from around the district. I have decided to integrate the Friday newsletter, formerly known as Friday Notes, as a sister publication of the Plymouth Voyager and reintroduce it as the - Voyager Express. Please Enjoy.

West Elementary School News

Miss Grattan's fourth grade class is studying the Northeast region of the United States. Students worked together in cooperative groups to create large scale maps of the region that included the states and capitals, as well as a key identifying the New England and Middle Atlantic states.

Mrs. Jones' second grade student, Michaela Malaguti, was a big help to Mrs. Kotakas during yesterday's dismissal. Thank you Michaela for directing all the children safely to their buses.

Pod 1 students worked on completing a glyph this week which created an individual picture representation of themselves.  This activity was used to help students develop positive attitudes towards themselves as unique and worthy as well as acknowledging that while people can have many things in common, each is unique in their own way.  Pod 1 students worked on completing a glyph this week which created an individual picture representation of themselves.  This activity was used to help students develop positive attitudes towards themselves as a unique and worthy as well as acknowledging that while people can have many things in common, each is unique in their own way.

Manomet Elementary School News

Manomet School celebrated International Walk-to-School Day today by encouraging any of our students who were able to walk instead of ride to do so. Instead of the typical 12-13 students who walk, we had a whopping 98 students who were able to get a little bit of exercise while enjoying the walk to school. This effort was part of the Department of Transportation's 'Safe Routes to School' program. All students involved were given some special tokens for their participation.

Grade 8 Trip to Washington, DC

The initial deposit for the Grade 8 trip to Washington, DC is due on 10/17/13. Parents should have received an email reminder about this upcoming deadline. Information about setting up a payment plan with the tour company, Close Up, can be found at www.closeup.org. Students were given IDs and passwords to log into that system.

Massachusetts Maritime Academy

Mercury grade 8 was the second PCIS group to go to Massachusetts Maritime Academy.  This opportunity gave some of our students the first glimpse at life after high school.  PCIS students were excited to meet and visit with professors and students from the college.  The hope of this trip is to inspire our students to continue their learning beyond high school.

Student of the Month

On Wednesday October 9th PCIS held their first grade 6 Student of the Month Ceremony.  Each month our teachers nominate students based on three categories: effort, citizenship, and improvement.  Both the students and the families in attendance enjoyed hearing the wonderful things their children are doing in school that inspired their teachers to nominate them.  Each student received an student of the month t-shirt, certificate, and a special letter from their teachers describing the reasons they were nominated.  Great job September Student of the Month recipients.

Hispanic Heritage Month

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, Ms. Carle's Spanish classes had the opportunity to interview two visitors from Argentina. The visitors, Gabriela and Jorge, spoke to the students in Spanish about the geography and climate of Argentina, as well as about the typical foods and popular sports there. Gabriela and Jorge also shared photos of their hometown, family and friends. Students then had the chance to ask the visitors questions in Spanish. It was exciting to see students interact with native speakers, using the language for authentic purposes.

PLYMOUTH SOUTH'S ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

The G & G/PSHS Female Athlete of the Week is Bethany Rogers.  Rogers is a senior goalie.  She was solid in net all week with a tie game against Nauset and a hard-fought 3-1 loss to Falmouth.  During the second half with Nauset, Plymouth South was down 3-1 but Rogers was able to shut down the offense in the second half.  Later in the week with Falmouth, Rogers came up with some big saves against a strong offense turning away 20 shots.  She has been working hard, both during games and at practice.  Congratulations!  Good work Bethany!

The G & G/PSHS Male Athlete of the Week is senior Ryan Reid.  Reid exhibits great leadership on the field, as well as off. His conduct on the field is always exemplary, and he successfully organized and recently ran a fundraiser for the team.  Although Reid did not record any points, he was extremely successful in motivating his teammates into two great performances. Great job! Congratulations Ryan!
