Introducing Voyager Express
Greetings!
Over the past 5 years, the Plymouth Public Schools has sent out a weekly newsletter. We've also released the first edition (Spring/ Summer) of the Plymouth Voyager, a magazine intended to highlight in-depth news from around the district. I have decided to integrate the Friday newsletter, formerly known as Friday Notes, as a sister publication of the Plymouth Voyager and reintroduce it as the - Voyager Express. Please Enjoy.

Sharon Cumiskey, GR8 STE Teacher at PSMS, has published an article in this month's edition of Science Scope.
Science Scope is the middle levels publication of the National Science Teacher's Association. The October issue is filled with the misconceptions about waves and electromagnetic radiation that students have. The issue is dedicated to making sure teachers and students are on the same wavelength when confronting these concepts.
Sharon's article is titled "Color: The Eyes Have It". It describes multiple activities that Sharon did with her students after having attended a summer workshop at UMASS Amherst, STEM Digital Images in Geoscience Investigations: Teaching Analysis With Light. The activities incorporate ADI software, a useful tool for sixth grade through college level classrooms.
Great work Sharon! Plymouth is proud of you!

West Rolls Out the Red Carpet
On Thursday, West Elementary celebrated their first WESTie Awards of the year. Hosted by Miss Learning and Mr. Young and occurring each month, students are nominated by any staff member for exemplifying the W.E.S.T. character traits (Wondering, Exploring, Searching, Thinking.) Over 50 students received WESTie certificates for the positive example they set at West for September.
Before they are handed those awards from their teachers students are able to walk down a red carpet in front of the entire school. In addition to students being recognized, three staff members, Mrs. Crociati, Mrs. Wescott, and Mrs. Rothberg also each received awards for going "above and beyond" this month in helping Grades 3-5 launch their MCAS Bootcamp. The assembly ended with an entertaining slideshow that captured many of the special moments that occurred at West in September. Students and staff are already anticipating what to expect at the October WESTies.

Little Buddies Meet & Greet
Oct. 2, 2013, Ms. Tinerella's fourth grade class meet their little buddies for the year from Mrs. Cotti's first grade class for the very first time! As big buddies, the fourth graders are expected to behave as role models and "Hedge School Kids" for their younger peers to look up to. They are asked to display qualities like kindness, respect, patience, and politeness. For the rest of the year big and little buddies will continue to spend time together and get to know one another.
For their first meeting the big buddies asked 'getting to know you' questions to their little buddies and then read aloud to them a book of their choosing, practicing and modeling good fluency and active reading.
Great job fourth graders. We are very proud of you all! |

South Elementary School News

This week, Mrs. Costa's Full Day Kindergarten class completed an interdisciplinary unit about apples. Students participated in several different activities as part of the unit. The class began the unit by reading Apples by Gail Gibbons. Using this text, students sequenced the life cycle of an apple and created a class diagram of the parts of an apple. Next, students conducted two experiments: one in which students predicted whether water, vinegar, or lemon juice would keep a cut apple from turning brown and the other in which students predicted whether apples would float in water. In math, students measured the circumference of apples using string and unifix cubes. Then, students weighed apples with pan balances by seeing how many counting bears equaled the weight of an apple. Finally, students created colorful apple patterns using apples as stamps.

Fun Fridays at South Elementary School

Students have shown that they are really meeting that expectation of helping others and doing good deeds without being asked. There were 76 students who earned a bucket filler award during the month of September.
