Introducing Voyager Express
Greetings!
Over the past 5 years, the Plymouth Public Schools has sent out a weekly newsletter. We've also released the first edition (Spring/ Summer) of the Plymouth Voyager, a magazine intended to highlight in-depth news from around the district. I have decided to integrate the Friday newsletter, formerly known as Friday Notes, as a sister publication of the Plymouth Voyager and reintroduce it as the - Voyager Express. Please Enjoy.

Constitution Day
Tuesday, September 17th marked the 226th anniversary of the signing of the Constitution. In 2004, Congress passed a bill designating that day as Constitution Day. In honor of Constitution Day, fifth grade students from Cold Spring School read the poem In 1787 by Jacqueline Jules at the Selectmen's Meeting and presented each one with a small booklet about the Constitution.
Cold Spring Students present at Selectmen's Meeting Ms. Shaughnessy, Kiarrai Rather, Chloe Cronin, Caitlin Hales, Andrew Melville and Zachary Cole. On Wednesday September 11th in memory of those lost on 9/11 and to the heroes of that day, the Social Studies Department at the secondary schools promoted a Red, White & Blue Day and collected items for our troops. The goods were donated to the Plymouth VFW through Mr. Bob Davidson to be sent to soldiers serving overseas. Donations for students and staff at PNHS

School Spirit Days
In the interest of promoting school spirit , students and staff are invited to participate in various school spirit days each month throughout the year. Everyone is encouraged to dress according to the theme for the day, or contribute to the theme in some way. Our September spirit day was "Cold Spring Day." Students and staff were invited to wear school colors (blue and yellow) or wear a field day tee shirt from a previous year. As you can see, Miss Rosen's fourth grade has a lot of school spirit. Our other spirit days include twins day, geography day, hat day (students and staff can wear a hat or donate a hat for those less fortunate), number day, mismatch day, book character day to celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday, career day and tropical day. These special events often include a curriculum connection or students bringing items from home to share. They help to make our days even more special at Cold Spring School!

Fifth Grader Isabella Getz displaying the horse shoe crab used in Mrs. Pisano's science class.
Students were asked to observe, draw and record observations of their individual horse shoe crab as part of a classification activity.
Students in Mrs. Albert's first grade class challenged themselves to read independently for 15 minutes during a Daily 5 lesson.
"Observation is the key to success" was the statement made by this outlandish character that surprised fourth grade students in Miss Tinnerella and Miss Tessotore's classes. After the surprise visit from this gentleman, who was really Mr. Smith, students were asked to list what they noticed about their visitor and sketch a picture which they used to practice writing narratives. It was a true test of paying attention to details in a non-traditional way.

West Elementary School News
|
Third graders at West Elementary School have begun to travel the world! Using the much-loved character Flat Stanley for inspiration, the students have created Flats that look like themselves to be sent around the globe. Just as Flat Stanley travels in his books, the students' Flats will travel to relatives and friends in various locations to explore the world. The recipient of the Flat is asked to provide information about where they live in a journal and mail/email any postcards or pictures to the classes. Any items received in the classrooms are then tied into the social studies and geography curriculum. The stories and pictures sent to the three classrooms will help make world study authentic. We are so excited to see where our Flats will go!

Over twelve boxes filled with baby wipes, aspirin, paper, pens, socks, towels, candy, coffee and batteries were donated. Students from Mr. Herbert's world geography class helped Bob Davidson of the Plymouth VFW load the supplies, which will be sent to local soldiers serving overseas.

The 6th grade math and science teachers in Ranger House created a lab safety skit to help their students learn about the science lab safety rules. The students were told that they were attending a lab safety demonstration by three local high school students in the PCIS Little Theater on Monday, September 23rd. The presentation began with a boring safety video, which was interrupted by the late arrival of three bumbling, unorganized, and interestingly dressed teachers disguised as high school students. The 15-minute skit included a variety of lab safety violations, which students listed and later shared in the classroom.
