District news and information for k-12 educators from the Elementary Library Media Specialists

Teachthought.com is an incredible resource for educators that focuses on many areas of teaching including, but not limited to learning, technology, mobile learning, ipads, and social media.

http://teachthought.com/trends/elearning/15-free-learning-tools-youve-probably-never-heard-of/

The above site speaks for itself. According to site explanation: " It can be hard to keep up with the ever-growing list of free educational sites out there, much less distinguish which ones will best meet your needs and help you learn skills you really need without shelling out big bucks. New sites are always being launched and even those that have been on the scene for a while sometimes don't garner enough attention to make it onto your radar, often getting overshadowed by more high-profile sites. As a result, even those who are in the ed tech loop can miss out on some seriously helpful free learning sites. Here we highlight just a few of these under-the-radar free learning sites, that run the gamut from providing full degree programs to simple job-skill training tools, offering a little something for every kind of learner."

Take a few minutes to see what it has to offer.

Federal Furnace Elementary School News

In honor of the anniversary of September 11th, Lisa Peterson's third grade class spent a lot of time discussing what makes a person a hero.  Students brainstormed heroic character traits, read biographies, and listed local people in Plymouth who were heroes.  State Trooper Bates then paid a visit to enthusiastically answer all sorts of questions about how he helps people in our community.

PSMS News

 Successful Start

We are off to a successful start at PSMS. The students have figured out their schedules, how to navigate the halls, open their lockers, and are now settling into the serious work of learning. The teachers have enjoyed getting to know the new students and hearing all about their summer reading.

This week, each student presented their reading reviews to peers in their home rooms, promoting our efforts to enhance literacy across the curriculum. We would like to thank the parents who supported this important initiative, both at home and at school.

Aspen System

One of our goals for the year is to empower the students as learners. Part of that process involves helping the students be more aware of the grades they earn on homework assignments, assessments, and classroom activities, allowing them to monitor their own progress and set goals for future performance. To support this endeavor, students in grades 6-8 will be receiving a log-on and password for a student portal to the Aspen Grade Book system that all teachers will be using this year. Parents are encouraged to speak with their children about the system, and can visit the school's web site to learn how to set up their own parent account.

 Fall Sports  Clubs and Activities

Next week, the fall sports teams kick into action. Students will be competing in soccer, field hockey, cross country, and volleyball. In addition, we will soon be announcing our lineup of after school clubs and performing arts programs. More information about these activities will be available on the school web site as it becomes available.

Open House Dates

Parents are invited to join us for the upcoming Open House Nights. (Grades 5 and 6 on Tuesday, 9/17 and Grades 7 and 8 on 9/24.)

On Wednesday, forty-eight PSHS visual art and music students embarked on an arts intensive, sixteen hour excursion to Boston! Students were able to do college visits at either Berklee College of Music or MassArt (College of Art and Design), meet students, ask questions about college and about careers in the arts, and tour the studios, galleries, and performance spaces. Following was a trip to the Museum of Fine Arts for the beginning of the "living sketchbook" project and for exploring the world of visual art, including their current exhibits of "Hippie Chic," "Women Photographers from the Arab World," and "Contemporary Art." Following this, students dined at Fire + Ice, which was much more of a performance than expected with the chefs cooking while everyone watched. The evening concluded with a performance of the hit musical Wicked at the Boston Opera House that was a musical, visual, and dramatic spectacular! This excursion was a great way to start the year and has the students pumped to integrate it into their artistry! Stay tuned for many more exciting visual and performing arts events this year from PSHS!
