STEP Foundation Awards
For the third year, the STEP Foundation continues an initiative to find and reward creative teachers within the Plymouth Public middle schools. The foundation looked to identify
middle school teachers who are inspiring students to achieve. Fellow teachers were asked to nominate these teachers. One teacher from each house at PCIS and one from each floor at PSMS were selected. All nominees will receive a certificate from the STEP Foundation.
From these seven candidates, four teachers were chosen by the STEP Foundation to receive a cash award, based upon an application for financial need to fund a classroom activity. The PCIS home-school association and Plymouth Rotary also contributed funds to make this possible. The seven Creative Teacher Award winners are listed below:

West Elementary School News
Mr. Young and Mrs. Learning's 3rd grade classes kicked off their Reading Workshops this week by providing students with strategies to choose "just right" books. Teachers used the analogy that selecting a book that fits well is just like choosing a shoe that fits well.
When choosing a book, students self-select a text regarding a topic in which they are interested. Students then use guided strategies to decide if they can accurately read most of the words, as well as determine if they can understand the book's meaning.
Mr. Young and Mrs. Learning assisted students in choosing "just right" books by creating and displaying a classroom anchor chart with the following acronym from The Daily 5:
I- I pick a book P- Purpose: Why do I want to read it? I- Interest: Am I interested in what I am reading? C- Comprehension: Am I understanding what I am reading? K- Know: I know most of the words. Both classes had a lot of fun "trying on" the shoes as well as their new books and are well-prepared to make smart book choices the rest of the year.

Plymouth South High School News
Thanks to all students and staff for a great first week of school. While it feels like we never left, we do know our staff has been shopping over the summer. A few teachers even dressed alike on the first day of school!
The fall athletic season is underway with a number of home contests next week. Please check out the South Panthers website for specific details! Come support our teams! Times have been moved of evening contests due to EEE. All athletic events and practices on school grounds need to be completed by 6:30 p.m. Thank you in advance for your patience with our rescheduling. Summer Art Summer at PSHS proved to be a creative time for our students that took part in the Summer Art Workshop taught by Ms. Quinn. This workshop was offered by the VPA Department. Students spent one week painting observational still life compositions, drawing the figure from a model, and experimenting with printmaking techniques to create monoprints. An impressive body of work was created by all. See the following photos of what the students accomplished during just one week:
DECA Inc. held its annual School-Based Enterprise Advisory Council meeting in Reston, Virginia over the summer. Doris Bishop, PSHS's marketing teacher was a member of this 2013-2014 SBE Advisory Council. The council members discussed a variety of topics related to DECA's SBE program including the SBE Certification Program, the 2014 International Career Development Conference SBE Academy, SBE Competitive Events and promotional strategies to increase SBE Certification Program participants. "The knowledge and expertise the council members provide to DECA is essential to leading the SBE program in a positive direction and achieving our goals," said Lori Tran, SBE assistant for DECA Inc. There are also two new projects in the works for DECA's SBE including an online submission system for SBE certification manuals and an individual SBE certification program that will provide recognition to individual students for their knowledge of small business operations. "Our council members will weigh in on these projects and we hope to develop a plan for pushing them out for the 2013-2014 school year," said Tran. DECA would like to thank its SBE Advisory Council members for their service and dedication to improving the SBE program.
Stephanie Molloy - PSHS Math Teacher advised us of the following: "I wanted to inform all of you of some very exciting news! I have been selected as one of 50 participants nationwide in the inaugural year of an Education Policy Fellowship sponsored by the NEA and TeachPlus. The fellowship involves regional meetings, webinar trainings, and 3 visits to Washington DC to meet with politicians and education officials to discuss changes in education policy and their impact on local school districts. The intention is to encourage teachers and administrators to lead change. Some of you may already know how interested I am in education policy and the law; this fellowship will afford me the opportunity to have meaningful conversations on the future of education with the people that are making the decisions. I am very excited! I also hope to bring with me feedback from our school district and really be a voice for Plymouth and Massachusetts." Congratulations to Stephanie !!! Save the Date - Open House October 1st - 7:00 p.m.
