Attention Grade 8 Students Enrolled in Honors Integrated Science

As outlined in the Program of Studies, freshmen who are enrolled in Integrated Science Honors for the 2013-2014 academic year are required "To complete an INDIVIDUAL science project demonstrating the application of the scientific method over a period of time."  This is a very challenging project that is especially demanding during the first semester of high school.  Included in this project are in-depth research assignments, experimental design, and the analysis of data. Students are required to complete a research paper, tri-fold board display, and oral presentation, in addition to completing an original experiment or investigation carried out over a period of time, extending into the first half of the third term. However, none of this is possible, unless students first have a well-developed topic.

For more information read the letter received from Grade 8 Science Teachers that went home with students this week.  You may access it here.

Cold Spring Elementary School News

The 5th grade students at Cold Spring School held their Invention Convention on Tuesday, June 11th. All the students had identified a problem to solve and designed their own invention to solve it.  As part of the process, the students maintained an Inventor's Log to document their progress and designed a prototype to present to their fellow inventors in order to get feedback on their project. Their final invention was presented to all the Cold Spring students and their family and friends.

Manomet Elementary School News

Manomet Elementary students enjoyed a visit from some new local celebrities, players of the Plymouth Pilgrims Baseball Team. The ballplayers read stories to classes throughout the day last Friday.

Second graders at Manomet Elementary published their very own poetry books.  Family members came to their classes to listen to the students read from their books. Wonderful illustrations accompanied their poems. Afterwards, more poetry was enjoyed as a group when several family members shared their own creative poems.

A small group from Mrs. Furman's class shares their poetry.

Bettencourt/Firth End of the Year Celebration

On Tuesday, June 18th, the Fifth grade students in Mrs. Bettencourt and Mrs. Firth's classrooms performed an "End of the Year" celebration for parents and peers. Kids displayed a variety of talents as they performed three different plays and a comical paired poetry reading.

The morning began with eight students dressed as Native Americans performing on clarinets and recorders as an introduction for the first play called, "A Native American Cinderella". The audience then watched two more plays titled, "A Baker's Dozen" and "Haste Makes Waste", both stemming from classroom lessons on working hard and the value of sharing. The performance concluded with pairs of students reading and acting out poetry written by their favorite authors.

After completion of the performance, family and friends were invited to the classroom where students shared their portfolios of classroom work they had accumulated throughout their year. It was a wonderful celebration of the individual student's growth and success as they bring the year to completion. Fun was had by all!

Plymouth South Middle School Relay Recess

Sixth grade students from the team of Lybarger, McCartin, Brigida and Flanagan recently completed a Community Service project in support of the American Cancer Society's mission to create a world with less cancer and more birthdays. This project began with the students presenting their project to the Superintendent and School Committee on May 20, 2013. Students created a commercial and speech inviting everyone to participate in this day long walking event, ending with the question, "Who will you walk for?"

The students worked diligently requesting donations from local businesses, creating commercials, designing t-shirts and planning all the events for the walking relay that was held at PSMS on June 13th from 8:30am to 2:30pm .

Throughout this project, students have been learning the importance of community service and working together for a common cause while incorporating all aspects of the curriculum. The students are very proud of the benefits and impact on our school and our community. At the end of the day, over $5500 was raised and our students and staff walked over 2,100 miles in their effort to support cancer research and healthy life choices.

Is That Frida Kahlo?

Senora Valerie McKay, substitute teacher, portrays the famous Mexican painter, Frida Kahlo, for the Spanish students at Plymouth South Middle School. Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) is one of the best-known Mexican painters. In spite of contracting polio at the age of six, a disabling traffic accident, and countless hospital stays throughout her life, Kahlo was an accomplished painter. Frida used her painting as an outlet for her physical and emotional pain.

North High Band Students Perform at Golden Living Center

On Wednesday, June 19th, North High School band students performed at the Golden Living Center in Plymouth.

The school band is part of a pilot program of the "Harmony Bridge" project founded by Michael Levine, leader of the world-renown music
ensemble, Dallas Brass.  Levine's intention behind the project is to connect generations through music and to help students learn about community service by having school band students perform at nursing
homes and senior living facilities across the country on a regular basis.

The woodwind, brass and percussion students performed in small ensembles and played arrangements of classic American folksongs
created especially for the Harmony Bridge Project by the Dallas Brass.

Though guided by their band director, Bonnie Holmes, the students worked on their own to learn and rehearse these songs and to make musical choices for the performances. The Band students and the residents of Golden Living Center enjoyed this performance!

Plymouth South High Student Kaeleigh Ellis was awarded a check from the Veteran's Services of the Town of Plymouth along with a letter of thanks.  Kaeleigh recreated the scrolling names of Honor Roll members.  It took her 5 months to finish the video - which was started by typing in 12,739 names.   She then placed the names into a video editing software program, adding pictures and music.  This will allow corrections as necessary and also give them the ability to start the Honor Roll at various wars so the public will not have to wait through the entire video to view their loved one's name.  The video will be continually played at Memorial Hall and Kaeleigh will continue to work on the video as long as she is a student here at Plymouth South High School.
