Cold Spring Elementary School News
The students in Miss Rosen's 4th grade class ended their study of folktales with a Stone Soup Festival. Students studied the characteristics of folktales and explore how culture impacts a folktale through reading many versions of Stone Soup. The class will keep a chart to compare the similarities and differences between all the versions and discussed the moral of the story in each version.
After spending some time talking about the meaning of this lesson, each student brought in an ingredient to make stone soup and we cooked our soup in the classroom. The students all agreed by the end of this unit that when everyone pitches and collaborates you can be much more successful (especially when making soup!)

PSMS NewsReferee Certification Received Declan Coffey, a Sixth Grade student, at PSMS recently completed a training course to become a certified Recreational Referee for soccer teams U8-U14. Declan is also an accomplished runner and a member of our Cross Country Team. He recently competed in Plymouth's St. Patrick's Day 5K road race "Pace to the Pint." Declan finished an impressive 4th place in his age group with a time of 22 minutes and 40 seconds. Congratulations! The Tradition Will Continue Last week we incorrectly reported that step dancer extraordinaire, Vanessa Townsend, was an 8th grader and moving on to the high school. Actually, she is a 7th grader who is a mature and responsible young lady and a natural leader. She is active in the Student Council and the Drama Club. We are happy to report that Vanessa will be with us for one more year and we are sure she will perform her annual step dancing routine once again on March 17th!

PCIS NewsPCIS Teacher Wellness For the second time this year PCIS dedicated one of its faculty meetings to teacher self care, and wellness. On March 27th PCIS teachers chose to participate in one activity from a variety offerings. Some of the activities offered were hiking, soccer, short run, long run, Zen Art, cardio sport group exercise class, body flow group exercise, Zumba, weight training with a personal trainer. This initiative is part of the schools educating traumatized students initiative. We feel allowing teachers the opportunity to take care of themselves and do something healthy relaxing and enjoyable will help the education of our children. Great job PCIS teachers. A special thanks goes out to the staff that ran some of the activities, Light House Fitness, Live Life Believe, and Shakin N-Groovin Zumba for donating their time to these activities. The staff at PCIS really appreciates it. John F. Kennedy Make A Difference Awards "President Kennedy believed that each of us can make a difference and all of us should try." Based upon this premise, the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library annually recognizes up to 100 middle school students in the state of Massachusetts for the differences they have made in their communities through service projects. PCIS is again proud to announce that two of our most deserving eighth grade students will be recipients at this year's award ceremony to be held at the Kennedy Library in Boston on Tuesday, April 9, 2013, at 4:00 PM. Apollo House student Isabel Kierstead and Mercury House student Maxwell Tripp were nominated by teachers and Falcon Pride advisors Mrs. Judy Maccaferri and Mrs. Joanne Keizer respectively. Both of these students are integral members of PCIS's eighth grade service learning organization called Falcon Pride and have assumed leadership roles over the course of the year on numerous projects; these include grade level Penny Wars (which the 8th grade won this year!), PCIS's annual Thanksgiving Baskets and the Marine's Toys For Tots drives, and the Jordan Hospital Club's Polar Plunge. Isabel Kierstead was chosen for this prestigious award because she volunteers to participate in every single Falcon Pride service activity and was this year's captain for our school's Polar Plunge Team named PCIS Falcon Power (pronounced POWAH!). This annual event benefits the Jordan Hospital Club Cancer Center, and this is the third year that Isabel has taken the plunge. This year Isabel alone secured pledges from family, neighbors, and friends to fundraise $930.00 for this wonderful cause which contributed significantly to the team's very impressive overall total of $7,500.00! Judy Maccaferri sings her praises by saying, "Isabel can be entrusted with any responsibility, and she works tirelessly for our school community on project after project while maintaining her own high academic standards. She is an excellent role model for her peers. Isabel is an effective communicator and is respected and well liked by her classmates; all of these reasons contribute to the fact that Isabel is a student leader who continues to make a positive difference in and out of school daily." Maxwell Tripp was selected for this honor based upon his positive attitude in school and willingness to volunteer in the community. Mrs. Keizer's nomination stated that "Max has a magical way of spreading enthusiasm amongst his classmates. He has spearheaded and volunteered numerous hours of his time to many service projects." Max successfully led a hats, mittens, and gloves drive in conjunction with Verizon for victims of Hurricane Sandy, and he is currently in the process of organizing PCIS's student team for the Greater Plymouth Relay for Life as the team co-captain. As Mrs. Keizer says, "Max's mature manner in which he gives his time to insure that these projects are successful is commendable. Whatever and wherever there may be a cause in our community, you will find Max Tripp there assisting in one way or another." Congratulations, Max and Isabelle! We are all very proud of your accomplishments and know that you will continue to "make a difference" in your schools and in the world throughout your lives!

Ms. Martin's culinary students in the above photo show their creative side making and decorating Easter Bunny Houses as a part of their class. Each semester, students are given an opportunity to decorate the houses - either Halloween, Christmas, Easter or Summer houses are made. The students are then allowed to bring their houses home. PSHS Technology in the Classroom by Jacqui Frongello, Technology Integration Specialist, PSHS Marketing Related 2 - Mr. Goonan's Marketing Related 2 students were assigned the project of creating a digital print ad advertising themselves as the product to either a college or potential employer. Students had to create their digital advertising proof on the iPad using the app Visualize.
Visualize is a free app that allows one to take visual thinking to a different level with the various image layering/editing, locking, drawing, text editing and other tools to create stunning visual images. Visualize can be used for brainstorming, sketches, business plans, and more! The digital proof had to include a headline to grab the attention of the reader, slogan, signature, image and sellable characteristics of themselves as the product. After the students created their digital print ad they then had to create a screencast using the app Explain Everything to explain the reasons why they chose the visuals and the particular style of elements (wording, fonts, colors, pictures, etc.) Mr. Goonan's Marketing students did a great job with being creative, unique and professional. To see the students digital print ads and screencasts go to the following link: http://marketingprintads2013.blogspot.com/ Senior Madison Braz was the Plymouth South High School winner of the Daughters of the American Revolution award. Each year the DAR awards over $150,000. through more than 25 scholarships to young individuals for their outstanding academic achievements. DAR Scholarships are offered for a wide range of disciplines including: history, law, medical, nursing, music, education and many more. For the first time ever in our school's history, the Plymouth South High School winter dance team came in 4th in the hip hop division giving them a chance to compete in the New England tournament held the following weekend. As a result, we came in last place. However, the dance that they had competed with was made up by the team's seniors in just one week- and was performed with great effort, and showed a lot of determination. We were happy just to be there among the other schools and see what it's like to be at a higher level! They truly did a fantastic job, Their coach, Mrs. Giampietro said she "could not be any prouder of them"!!
L-R: Jesse Parks, Steve Kennedy, Alex Krastanov and Celio DaSilva Freshmen in the marketing program have organized a "Some Bunny Loves You" marketing campaign. For a small fee, students and staff can send someone a Cadbury egg. As part of the campaign, each student posed while wearing bunny ears. The photos were posted in the cafeteria, along with "bunny biographies". The eggs were hand-delivered by one of 70 "bunnies" of their choice. Proceeds from the campaign will benefit the marketing program. Congratulations to Plymouth South Senior Kenneth Fantasia. He was selected by the Atlantic Coast League of the MIAA to receive the 2013 Boston Bruins-MIAA Sportsmanship Award. The award is given annually by the Boston Bruins and the MIAA to one individual from each high school hockey league in the state who best exemplifies the highest standards of fair play and sportsmanship.
