Nathaniel Morton Elementary School Celebrates 100th Day and 100th Year

On February 15th, the students and staff at Nathaniel Morton took part in an afternoon of activities to celebrate both the 100th day of school and the 100th year of the school. Students rotated throughout the school with 100-based activities like building with 100 cups, rolling dice 100 times, exercise moves for 100 seconds, designing with 100 pattern blocks, and putting together picture puzzles from 1913. Students also brought in items via a food drive that they used to create a "Can-struction" and were able to donate over 1,000 food items to the Plymouth Food Pantry.

Students celebrated the school's birthday by singing and creating an expressive Happy Birthday poster with each child's finger print represented. Finally, all the students joined together to form a large 100 in the gymnasium to kick off the day!

A Wedding Fit for a Queen

Kindergartners in Ms. Erin Shirley's class have been learning how the letters "Q" and "U" go together in words that begin with "Q," and what sound those two letters make together. The lesson concluded with a wedding on February 15.

"What better way to remember this spelling rule than to have the letters get married?" asks Ms. Shirley.

Along with the wedding came preparation in the days before: a "how to bake a cake" book, and a Q and U wedding shower. The book was created by students as they prepared ingredients and wrote down step-by-step instructions.

"Collaboratively, each student had a turn to mix the ingredients and write words in our class book, which directly relates to our ELA curriculum," Ms. Shirley notes. "The cake that we made was the one used on the wedding day."

For the wedding shower, students wrapped gifts that started with the letters "Qu" and "U," and the only item that starts with just a "Q": Q-tips. In show-and-tell fashion, each student unwrapped their item and the class sorted them by the beginning letters. The activity helped teach that the letter "U" can be alone in words, but "Q" almost always has "U" with it in words that start like /qu/.

On the big day, the boys helped the letter "Q" up to the altar, wearing Q bow ties decorated with quarter stamps, and the girls helped the letter "U" while they wore U veils. Many families of students were on hand for the celebration.

Making a Mark in Art

Ms. Anna Jorgensen and Mrs. Sarah Cristani, SES librarian and art teacher, submitted original artwork from eight students between second and fourth grade to the Massachusetts School Library Association annual bookmark contest. This year's theme was "School Libraries: Books and Beyond." There were hundreds of submissions and students were judged on interpretation of the theme and their art ability.

This is the second time that Ms. Anna Jorgensen and Mrs. Cristani have had school submissions, and they plan to continue the program to compete for an SES win.

"We are very proud of the artwork and time that each student put into their bookmarks," Ms. Jorgensen says.

PCIS News

On Saturday, March 2nd, PCIS's Falcon Pride Polar Plunge Team named Falcon POWAH joined hundreds of other brave swimmers at Plymouth Beach to take place in the Jordan Hospital Club's 11th annual Polar Plunge. Appropriately dressed as superheroes complete with purple capes and a superhero logo, thanks to the artwork of eighth grade teacher Rebecca Sykes and the assistance of IMC lab aide Marjie Cote, this team of forty students raised $7,500.00 to benefit the Jordan Hospital Club Cancer Center and took the prize for the most money raised in the middle school category!

One of the highlights of the day was undoubtedly doing the Harlem Shake in/on/around/behind/in front of Mr. Stande's Jeep...the plungers only wished the judges had been around to award their enthusiasm!!! Another highlight was accepting their trophy at the Plymouth Yacht Club afterwards.

While Falcon Pride advisors Joanne Keizer, Judy Maccaferri, and Kim Sims organized the team on the beach, advisors Mark Kelleher and Shane Stande actually accompanied them into the water. PCIS sixth grade teacher Kellianne Campbell also plunged with the Falcons..brrr!

Whether dressed as Batman, Captain America, Spiderman, Superman, the Green Lantern, or a Ninja Turtle, the following eighth graders truly are PCIS's heroes: James Addison, Andrew Armenio, Joe Aveni, Lillian Backlund, Emily Burke, Shannon Burns, Charlotte Clark, Brooke Coleman, Mary Delos-Reyes, Jared Downie, Sophia Fosdick, Leanne Galaneck, Camryn Gilmore, Jeremy Harold, Matt Hickey, Isabel Kierstead, Anna Kiley, Maddy Lapsley, Emily Lee, Emily Mayer, Sarah McAskill, Molly McKenna, Adrianna McNeely, Bianca Pagnini, Ariana Panzer, Natalie Paul, Bridgette Ruuska, Samantha Salvas, Abigail Salvucci, Alexxia Shortall, Hannah Strohschneider, Grace Sullivan, Savannah Texiera-Silva, Allyson Tolles, Maxwell Tripp, Heather Ward, Savannah Winship-Cody, and Schae Wilson. (Bobby Colbert and Melissa Burke also contributed to the fundraising but were unable to attend Saturday's Polar Plunge.)

Plymouth South High School News

Julianna Mori recently passed her U.S. Figure Skating Senior Moves in the Field test on February 20, 2013.  Julianna is extremely proud of this accomplishment.  She is a sophomore high honors student at Plymouth South High School.

Julianna is a member of The Bourne Skating Club in Bourne, MA and has been skating since the age of 3.  In the 26 year history of the Bourne Skating Club, Julianna is only the 6th skater to achieve Gold Medalist status.  Julianna is also a synchronized skater and is a member of Team Excel Senior team representing The Skating Club of Boston.

The U.S. Figure Skating test structure is the backbone of participation in figure skating.  Each U.S. Figure Skating test that she has passed is a permanent achievement that goes on her U.S. Figure Skating record. Passing the senior test means that a skater has achieved the highest accomplishment in testing, and has now earned the title "U.S. Figure Skating Gold Medalist". Julianna will carry this title forever. She will be able to put it on a coaching resume, college application, and even job resumes.

Fewer than 1,000 members of U.S. Figure Skating pass the Senior Moves in the Field test each year, representing about 1% of U.S. Figure Skating full membership.

She has worked very hard and dedicated many hours both on and off the ice to achieve this title.

Congratulations Julianna!
Gary E. Maestas, Ed.D Superintendent
