Manomet Elementary School News
Students in Grades 3 through 5 had some special visitors come to speak with them this past week. Representatives from Jordan Hospital came to talk about a special project that they run. The "Jordan Cares Closet" has been established to provide necessary clothing to individuals who might arrive at the emergency room wearing the only clothes they own. By stocking the shelves of their "closet", individuals are able to leave the hospital in clean clothes, rather than ones that are bloody, dirty, or ripped. Children at Manomet will be spreading the word to help stock these shelves and do their part.

Winter Wonderland
When school resumes for Sandy Hook students, it will be in a new building. PTA volunteers there are working to ensure that the students are welcomed back by a winter wonderland with the entire school decorated with as many unique snowflakes as possible. Mrs. DeCoste's 7th and 8th grade Health Education students have contributed over one hundred snowflakes to the effort. What a wonderful way to show support for the students of Sandy Hook Elementary!

News from Falcon Pride
Falcon Pride's second annual Penny Wars ran through the month of December and ended right before winter recess; students contributed to the grade level jars during their lunchtimes in the cafeteria. The grand total of money collected was $518.81 and the eighth grade won the war!!! All proceeds will be used for community service projects.
The 8th grade class brought in the most money, $203.31, and raised the most money as well even with their deductions of $42.15; this brought their winning Penny Wars total to $161.16! CONGRATULATIONS!!!
The 7th graders brought in the next largest amount of money, $170.79. They had the most pennies but also had the most deductions, $56.62, which consequently brought their overall total down to $114.17.
The 6th graders trailed a little behind the other two grades in terms of the total amount of money raised, $144.71, but they also had the least amount of deductions, $29.35. As a result, the sixth grade managed to bring their overall total to $115.36 and beat out the seventh grade by a little more than a dollar!!!
The next Falcon Pride meeting will be held on Thursday, January 10, and it will be an organizational meeting for the PCIS Polar Plunge team. Newly designed Falcon Pride t-shirts will be distributed to all members in good standing at the last meeting of the month - just in time for PCIS's 40th birthday celebration!
Upcoming events for January and February include a hat, gloves, and mittens drive for the victims of Hurricane Sandy. This drive is in the process of being organized and will continue through Valentine's Day. Falcon Pride will also be making a trip in February to area nursing homes to bring Valentine's Day cheer by presenting flowers and cards, singing, playing instruments, and chatting with the residents.

Paper Hearts Across America
There is a picture attached of Grace Baler (left) with classmate Madi Antonetti (right). Grace presented a Current Event to her Geography class about the Paper Hearts Across America Facebook page. Grace and her classmates expressed an interest in creating hearts to send to the family in Billings, MT that started this movement. The kids have been making hearts at home and bringing them in to show their support for the people of Newtown, CT. We have a bulletin board of hearts in our hallway. The remaining hearts will be mailed out at the end of the week.
Here is a link to the Facebook page:

Snowflakes for Sandy Hook As students completed their assigned work for various art classes December 20th and 21st, paper and instruction were available for creation of "Snowflakes for Sandy Hook". The Connecticut PTA headquarters called for snowflakes to be mailed to their office to be hung by volunteers in the windows of the temporary replacement elementary school provided in Monroe, CT. About 200 of our PSMS art students chose to contribute to this effort. The beautiful delicate flake displayed was created by sixth grader Jacob De Francesco. Thank You and Goodbye The Christmas break marked the end of our student teacher, Mrs. Amy Jacobsen-Stec's, 15 week practice teaching experience. She will be missed by staff and students! Mrs. Stec's efforts were invaluable in regard to so many projects at Plymouth South Middle School some of which included helping with the Festival of Trees, the holiday concert, the Halloween decorations, and creating wonderful bulletin board displays all after school. Mrs. Stec also brought in a new energy with some wonderful assignments she developed for all four grades. We all wish her the best of luck going forward as a licensed art teacher. Students will be lucky to have her!

Plymouth South High School News
The G & G/PSHS Female Athlete of the week is senior Alyson Messina. During the Winter Track Holiday Qualifier, Messina's win dominated the 55m hurdles. In addition to that she was part of the 4x400 relay team that set a school record, taking 1st Place at last weekend's Holiday challenge. Nice work, Aly! The G & G/PSHS Male Athlete of the week is junior Michael Mele. Thanks to Mele, South's Basketball team finished the week with a 2-1 record. Mele led the Panther's, scoring in all three games. Monday against Sandwich, he finished with a high of 30 points in the loss. Thursday, he finished with a high of 18 points. Saturday against crosstown rival PNHS, he finished with a game high of 29 points. Mele ended the week averaging 25.6 points per game helping South improve its record to 3-1. Terrific work, Mike! PSHS Technology in the Classroom by Jacqui Frongello, Technology Integration Specialist, PSHS
Mrs. Hall's Geometry CP1 classes did great things with eBooks when they were presented with the opportunity to create an eBook on the iPads using the app Creative Book Builder. The eBook had to focus on the various types of triangles that the students learned in class. Students had to find the triangles themselves in everyday real life. Once the students found their triangles they then had to justify and prove that what they found was a true triangle with accurate calculations. The students then took their pictures/videos and findings and put it in a book either telling a story or teaching about the various triangles. The collaborative, hands on learning and math discussions going on as the eBooks were being created were just as a powerful learning tool as the eBooks that were being created! As you may know, Plymouth South started a new recognition program at PSHS - a Perfect Attendance Award. Each month students receive a certificate in the mail. They will also have their name entered into a drawing for a gift certificate to lunch in culinary. Every month, one male and one female name are drawn. The winners for September through October are: Madison Braz and Noah Smith. The September through November winners are: Morgan Sacco and Sean Swanton and for September through December winners are: Jared Rooney and Katelin Gellar. Don't forget that attendance does matter!!
e PLYMOUTH SOUTH'S ATHLETES OF THE WEEK For week ending 1/11/13 The G & G/PSHS Female Athlete of the week is freshman Madison Norris. In the recent win against defending ACL League Champs, Falmouth, Norris excelled on offense. During the game she hit six 3-pointers on her way to scoring a high of 26 points - the majority of points coming in the third quarter, when Falmouth sat back in a zone. All the while her teammates did a great job finding the open Norris who drained the 3's helping Panthers increase the lead of their 1 half-time point. The Lady Panthers won the game 61-47! Nice work, Maddie! The G & G/PSHS Male Athlete of the Week is Shane Mulligan. Mulligan, a senior, is currently 13 and 1 on the year in wrestling. In a shining victory last week he pinned his St. John's Prep opponent with only 5 seconds left to win the match. Mulligan has helped the wrestling team achieve their current record of 14-0. Congratulations, Shane! POSTER FOR SANDY HOOK With the help of the art department our students at PSHS have designed a beautiful banner to send to Sandy Hook Elementary school. Students and staff signed the banner this week during lunches! TOY DRIVE Thanks to our hockey and wrestling team who hosted yet another toy drive for the children of Plymouth.
NHS INDUCTION Last night at Plymouth South High School, juniors and seniors were inducted into the William Bradford Chapter of the National Honor Society.
