It's Reading Cats and Dogs
Preschoolers in Miss Ellen's class have been participating in a Scholastic Reading challenge. To kick off the challenge, the children did an author study by the amazing Laura Numeroff. After reading, If You Give a Dog a Donut and If you Give a Cat a Cupcake, kids had to decide if they wanted to be on the "dog" team or the "cat" team.
In addition to the fun activities we participated in at school (like painting the characters, sequencing the story, counting out bones to feed to the dogs, sorting cats by colors, rolling dice to see how many cookies the mouse will eat, making whole wheat pancakes, and drawing their favorite stories in their journals), children read every night with their parents and logged the minutes online. For every child that participated, Scholastic donated a book to charity. When the children were finished, they brought their reading logs back to school and received a free book of their own. Their favorite part was re-enacting the story using the stuffed animal characters.

Cold Spring Elementary School News
Mrs. Smith's and Mrs. Terranova's second graders concluded their science unit on "A World of Living Things." All of the students worked diligently as they researched an animal in class. They studied interesting facts regarding their animals, for example life cycle and how their habitat provides for their basic needs. Each student used the information he or she researched to create a way to present their findings, some made tri-folds, posters or dioramas. Students proudly presented their projects to their class.

Creative Craters
Phases of the moon and its orbit around the Earth provided more than scientific learning, as students got out pen and paper to use their imaginations.
"Students learned about the surface of the moon and wrote about whether they would take a trip to the moon to experience space and see how craters were formed on the moon's surface," says Mrs. Jessica Sherman of her fourth grade class. "I enjoyed their creative ideas about taking that kind of vacation!"
As a scientific discovery activity, students filled pans with sand and smoothed out the surfaces that represented the surface of the moon. They used various objects, such as marbles and golf balls, to represent meteorites crashing onto the moon and creating craters. They sought to answer their questions about why the moon's craters are different sizes.
Science groups formed hypotheses and conducted experiments. They carefully observed and recorded their results and named variables that could cause meteorites to form different size craters, such as the speed of impact and size of the meteorite.
"Students came up with some excellent scenarios involving meteorites repeatedly crashing into the same crater," Mrs. Sherman notes. "They tested this with objects and observed their results. This sparked interest and other questions were born."
Among the questions: Why does the moon have more craters than Earth?
After researching further, they came to the conclusion that the atmosphere causes objects to burn up as they enter Earth; because the moon has no atmosphere, more meteorites hit the ground.
Mrs. Sherman says of the lesson: "It was a wonderful unit of discovery, and some of these future astronauts have great hopes to one day leave their own footprints right next to Neil Armstrong's footprints!"

PEARL HARBOR DAY PRESENTATION
United States Congressman William Keating visited Plymouth South Middle School last week and brought a very special guest with him. He was accompanied by Mr. Thomas Ruggiero, one of the local WWII veterans who were featured on a documentary entitled "Bringing History Home".
The 8th grade students viewed the 30-minute video and had the opportunity to ask Mr. Ruggiero questions. The Plymouth native, now 92 years of age, read from a prepared statement about his experiences as a soldier during the D-Day Invasion. The students were captivated by the film, which also featured interviews from several other local veterans, including Mrs. Alba Thompson, a former Plymouth Public School educator who served on General MacArthur's staff in Japan. The students asked insightful questions and were entertained by some of Mr. Ruggiero's stories.
We would like to thank Congressman Keating and his staff, as well as Roxanne Whitbeck, Director of Veterans Services in Plymouth, for helping to arrange this unique opportunity and for bringing WWII to life for our students.
Kyle Courson, Vance Spencer, Mr. Ruggerio and Robert DiMartino Molly Nemes thanking Mr. Ruggerio for all that he did Mr. Ruggerio answering a question from Ryan Beaton FESTIVAL OF TREES Thirteen art students from Plymouth South Middle School went to Plimoth Plantation after school on November 29th to decorate their 8 foot tree for The Festival of Trees run by the Cranberry Area Hospice. Under the direction of Mrs. Mary Jane Calhoun-Donelan and Mrs. Amy Jacobsen-Stec, the students decorated their tree and toured the other displays. They were then treated to a light pizza supper provided by anonymous benefactors. Students were thrilled with the cool T-shirts generously provided by our PTA! The after school club began on October 11th, 2012. We appreciate parental support as our students learn about community service and live the club motto, "Good begets good!" This year our tree honored, in memorium, local dentist Dr. Michael Pincelli. For over twenty years Dr. Pincelli was one of Santa's helpers on many Christmas Eves in downtown Plymouth as well as at the Jordan Hospital Pediatric Ward. Dr. Pincelli also used his antique fire truck to transport Santa to many community events. The tree will be entitled "The Spirit of Santa". Our school has participated in this after school activity since we opened PSMS in 1999. KID'S VOTING BOOKMARK CONTEST Congratulations to Hunter Hasenfus, a 5th grader at Plymouth South Middle School who was one of ten district winners of the Kid's Voting Bookmark Contest. In conjunction with our Literacy Program and this year's Presidential election, students created artistic bookmarks emphasizing the importance of voting. Entries were judged and ten winners were recently announced. The contest was sponsored by the Makepeace Neighborhood Fund. Mrs. Kathleen Babini, Coordinator of Social Studies for the Plymouth Public Schools, recently visited Hunter's classroom and presented him with a certificate and a laminated copy of his winning bookmark. Each 5th grade student at PSMS also received a copy of Hunter's winning bookmark. Well done Hunter! HURRICANE SANDY RELIEF-TAKE 2 A second shipment of new and gently used clothing was sent to our counterparts at Lawrence Middle School on Long Island. Seventy-six bags were delivered this past weekend, which followed a shipment of 46 bags that were delivered during Thanksgiving. We are proud to announce that the 122 bags were filled with clothing of all sizes and types. This clothing is for students and their families who are still recovering from the effects of Hurricane Sandy. Thank you once again to the PSMS community for helping so many others in this time of need. HOLIDAY AUCTION WEEK AT PSMS The Annual Holiday Auction season is underway with three of our teams. Students are encouraged to bring in their used toys, games or other gifts to be auctioned off so their classmates may bid on the items. The 2nd Floor Grade 7 Team raised $2,200, which will be used to purchase gifts for students from less fortunate families. The 3rd Floor Grade 7 Team raised $1,160 and the 3rd Floor Grade 8 Team raised $515. This annual event epitomizes the giving spirit and community service that PSMS students, staff and parents continue to demonstrate year in and year out. Your generosity is truly appreciated.

Holiday Band Concert Students in grades 6 through 8 performed their annual holiday concert, which included a string ensemble, on Thursday, December 13, 2012. The students entertained the audience with music selections such as Jingle Bell Rock, Let it Snow, Hanukkah Dance, African Noel, Dreidel, Jolly Old St. Nick, and musical arrangements from "The Polar Express". This concert definitely put us all in the holiday mood. Congratulations to Mr. Shaw and Mr. Corey for an outstanding concert.
Dance Team Food Drive School psychologist and PCIS dance team instructor, Mrs. Lori Rush, and five members of the dance team ventured to Wal-Mart on a cold and rainy Sunday morning to collect donated food for the annual PCIS December food collection. Food baskets will be delivered to PCIS families in need before the holiday break. This event, like many others at PCIS, teaches students the importance of giving back and making a difference. It is our hope that these skills carry over into adulthood and that we groom a future generation of givers. Thank you to all that supported this program; our families do appreciate it.
Cyber-Safety Assemblies On Thursday, December 13, 2012, Assistant District Attorney Kristen Stone visited PCIS and held three Cyber-Safety Assemblies. Although a powerful tool, the internet can be dangerous when in the wrong hands or when misused. Attorney Stone helped educate our students on the proper use of technology by using real-world, first-hand stories. We hope this assembly will help our students make good decisions online and help to keep them safe. We thank District Attorney Cruz and Assistant District Attorney Stone for their work with the students at PCIS. Falcon Pride Activities Falcon Pride held their annual holiday party on December 6th. This event was to enjoy time together and to promote the Toys for Tots Drive, sponsored by Falcon Pride and the 6th grade Ambassadors. Each student brought in one toy for the drive as his/her ticket to enter the movie/party. The event was enjoyed by all, and gave back as well. Falcon Pride students helped out at the Plymouth Family Network's annual holiday party on December 4th at PCIS. Students assisted parents and their children in decorating gingerbread cookies and making other holiday crafts. The students and their families had a wonderful time celebrating the holiday season.
Babysitting Club On Tuesday, December 4, 2012, sixteen PCIS students celebrated the successful completion of the PCIS 4-H Babysitting Course. The course covers topics such as safety, first aid, CPR, child development, nutrition, entertainment, and the business of babysitting. It takes place after school on Tuesdays and is open to all students. Ms. Carol Roupenian, RN/School Nurse Educator and Ms. Tammy Cruz, Health Office CNA, are the instructors for the course, which is free of charge and runs for 8 weeks. Good luck to all the graduates! The next course is already booked and filled to capacity. For more information call the Health Office at PCIS at 508-830-4450. Grade 6 Ambassadors - Toys for Tots For the last few weeks our 6th grade Ambassadors have been working very hard collecting toys for the United States Marine Corp Toys for Tots program. The culminating activity was a visit from two United States Marines. The students were able to present the Marines with a large amount of toys that also included two bicycles. One marine thanked our students for their work and also shared how he once benefited from the Toys for Tots program. This marine was a foster child and vividly remembers opening up a "Game Boy" that came from the Toys for Tots program.
Holiday Yard Sale For the last two weeks our students have been busy shopping during their lunch time. Every year our staff donates gifts and re-gifts to sell during lunch. These items are for sale at a significantly reduced rate. Most items cost between $.25 and a $1.00. All monies raised are donated to buy gift cards for students in need. |

PNHS Project Growth with the help of Best Buddies will be sponsoring a magic show on January 12, 2013 at The Performing Arts Center. The students will be selling tickets during all lunches beginning Monday, December 17, 2012. Tickets are $5 each and all proceeds will be given to Project Growth in honor of PNHS paraprofessional Donna Johnson who passed away from cancer. The magic show will be on Saturday, January 12th at 2:00pm. Rumble at the Rock PNHS was host to "Rumble At The Rock" Battle Bots event last Saturday, December 8th. There were over 150 guests. Mr. Bastoni's Robotics group was host to several schools around the state. These schools presented their robots for battle in the arena that the students designed and built.
PNHS Purple Team The Purple Team has been working on a cross curricular initiative project for the last few weeks. A little bit about the project: the team has been collecting donations for care packages to send to troops overseas in efforts to reach out to them during the holiday season when they cannot be with their families and friends. Purple Team classes met, where Science classes calculated the volume of the donations we have received, Math classes graphed and plotted the data from donations, History classes looked at the situation in Afghanistan, and English classes wrote letters to the troops. Many famous authors, like Ernest Hemingway for example, spent time writing and finding inspirations in local cafes. We would love to give the students the opportunity to experience a writing and working workshop similar to this- where they may be able to have some snacks and sit individually to write and work. We hope they can find inspiration from the type of writing environment that having food and drinks can spark and create-especially when they sit down to write and reach out to our troops. After consulting with PPS policy and getting approval, we were made aware of an acceptable food list (adapted from http://johnstalkerinstitute.org/alist) that Plymouth North follows in efforts to keep curriculum projects and initiatives like this a healthy experience for students. With that, the team has pursued items according to that list for contribution for tomorrow's activity. Challenge Day - Student Voice Initiative The Plymouth North Math Team hosted the Southeastern Massachusetts Math Team Competition on Thursday, December 6 for Division 6. Schools participating were Carver, Middleboro, Pembroke, Plymouth North, Plymouth South and Silver Lake. Plymouth North placed first with a score of 82 and Plymouth South placed second with a score of 70. High scorers for Plymouth North were seniors: Adam Chapman, Cameron O'Dwyer, and Derek Salvucci; junior: Michael Bambrick and sophomore: Shauna Quinn. Next meet is January 3 at Plymouth South.
Art Students Council on Aging The Art Department was approached to see if PNHS Art Students would be interested in helping to decorate a room that Amedisys was sponsoring for the Council on Aging's opening in December. We thought it would be a great way to start the connection between the COA and the school. Students were asked to submit their photo images of Plymouth and/or Winter Time for consideration, and a photo of downtown Plymouth by senior Billy Sears was decided on for the theme. Ceramics created ornaments to decorate the tree, and Portfolio Prep students worked on individual Holiday themed paintings as well as a large collaborative painted mural inspired by Bill's photo. The mural was so well received by staff and visitors to the center that it was decided it would become a permanent part of the COA, who generously contributed to the Art Students Activity Fund in acknowledgment. Also present at the celebration for the Grand Opening of the Council on Aging were students from the NHS, Band and DECA Program. These students volunteered their services and helped to make the event a success. PNHS Winter Concert Plymouth North's Music Department presented its Winter Concert on Wednesday, December 5th, at 7:00 PM in the PNHS Performing Arts Center. Over 300 guests were entertained with performances from the PNHS Band, Chorus, Jazz Band and Northern Lights (A Cappella)! Northern Lights A Cappella PNHS Chorus PNHS Orchestra
