South Elementary School NewsCatapult launches hands-on learning Science and Social Studies came together for a "moving" lesson in Mrs. Christine DeSantis' fourth grade class. Students were studying the ancient civilizations of Greece and Rome in Social Studies, and simple machines in science. Mrs. DeSantis challenged the students to integrate what they learned about these subjects by creating posters that showed how simple machines were used in ancient times. "They illustrated and labeled ancient buildings, irrigation, transportation, and warfare concepts, and then they explained which simple machines were used for each invention," Mrs. DeSantis notes. The lesson moved forward as students experimented with a model catapult - a Greek invention - to discover how it uses several simple machines to launch projectiles of varying sizes and weight. Lifesavers, paperclips, pennies and cubes were among the flying objects that the children observed, noting the distance that objects were launched compared to their weight and density.

Andy Warhol Inspired Halloween Art Installation Students in Mrs. Calhoun-Donelan's art classes created life-sized candy as part of the PSMS Annual Halloween Costume Contest. The Any Warhol inspired creations are colorful renditions of our most popular candy brands and are displayed on the stage in the cafeteria for all to see. Grade 6 students from Mrs. Goding's homeroom Jenny Wedge, Taylor Rouse and Keegan Savage enjoyed learning about Andy Warhol, pop art and creating their projects. Here is what they had to say. "Creating the Pop Art candy was really fun! We always wanted to hurry back to the art room to work on it and finish it. Before we were born, Andy Warhol did art like this. Andy Warhol called his studio "the Factory", so we worked in teams like factory workers. You have to cut in the edges of paint for a clean line. This is part of craftsmanship and we have been learning about craftsmanship. Tonight is Halloween and we are so excited! This project is exciting too, and related to Halloween! When we go home our parents are going to be very proud of us for doing a good job!" Thank you to all of Mrs. Calhoun-Donelan's students for helping to decorate the cafeteria and making Halloween a special day at PSMS.
8th Graders Visit BSU For the fourth consecutive year, 8th graders from PSMS recently visited Bridgewater State University. Prior to leaving, students engaged in activities designed to stimulate interest in preparing for the college experience. They learned new vocabulary related to college and careers. They viewed a Powerpoint presentation by our guidance staff, which highlighted information about Bridgewater State and various course offerings and career possibilities. Upon their arrival, the students were greeted by their guides and toured the campus in five small groups. In this intimate and personalized setting, the students were able to ask questions and interact with a BSU undergraduate student, learning about campus life. The groups received a first-hand view of a typical dorm room as well as the Adrian Tinsley Athletic Center, the Maxwell Library, the Rondileau Campus Center and the brand new Marshall Conant Science Building. The students concluded their tour among the undergraduate students with lunch in the Maxwell Dining Hall in Tillinghast Hall. The purpose of this program is to promote an early awareness about the importance and possibilities of college and careers. Our intention is to provide our students with an exposure that typically occurs much later in high school. It is our belief that this experience will inspire the students and get them thinking about their futures. Upon return, students participated in debriefing discussions with their teachers and completed a feedback survey. Hopefully, the students enjoyed the experience and realized the relationship between effort, motivation and academic and long-term success.
Halloween at PSMS On Wednesday, October 31st, students and staff got into the Halloween spirit and participated in the Student Council Halloween Costume Contest. The cost to participate was either $1.00 or a donated canned food item for the local food bank. The Student Council generated over $200.00 and donated 2 large recycle bins of food. The winners of the 2012 Halloween Costume Contest are pictured below. Congratulations to the winners and thank you to everyone who participated. Malekani is a junior defender on the Field Hockey Team. Although she played strong defense all season, this past week Malekani really stepped up when, with less than three minutes left in the game against Nauset, she stopped a rival's breakaway preventing a tie. Thanks to Malekani's determination, Plymouth South held on for the win with a score of 2-1. Not only has Malekani displayed outstanding efforts as a team player and a student athlete, she motivates her team everyday with unsurpassed team spirit. Congratulations! The G & G/PSHS Male Athlete of the week is senior Jason McCue. McCue played a major role in the success of Boys' Cross Country this season by aiding greatly in the Panthers defeats over Nauset, Dennis-Yarmouth, and Falmouth in the Atlantic Coast League Championship. This is the best finish by the Panthers in over 10 years. With his impressive 9th place overall and his personal best time, McCue has been awarded All Star status as well. McCue can always be counted on for his leadership qualities and his 100 percent participation in practice and in meets. Congrats Jason! The Plymouth Vocational Technical Education Program Advisory Committee Dinner was held Tuesday, Oct. 23rd at South High School. Over 160 business leaders, community members, college and union representatives along with students and parents serve on the Advisory Committee. The mission of the committee is to provide guidance to all of our Career and Vocational Technical programs at both South and North High Schools. Members met within each of the programs to discuss new initiatives, curriculum and employment outlook. In addition, members of the committee make suggestions for new equipment and materials that will assist our CVTE students as they prepare for high skill labor opportunities or enrollment into post-secondary colleges or technical institutes. The dinner was highlighted by Senior Kaila O'Farrell who serves as a SkillsUSA National Officer. Kaila is enrolled in the Electrical Program at PSHS and served as a Massachusetts State Officer last year. SkillsUSA is the largest student organization in the country. The organization prepares our CVTE students to be leaders in industry and develop professional and community service goals. Kaila recently traveled to Washington DC to meet with Senator Brown to discuss support for Career and Vocational Education in Massachusetts. We have started a new recognition program at PSHS...a Perfect Attendance Award!! Students who had PERFECT attendance the month of September have received a certificate in the mail. In addition, all names were entered into a drawing. Each month one male and one female will each receive a gift certificate to lunch with a friend in culinary. Blue Team: Female - Valerie Tarr/Male - Dillon Slattery. Yellow Team: Female - Marissa Monroy/Male - Michael Armenio. Technology in the Classroom: by Jacqui Frongello We would like to share with you all some of the great things that are going on around Plymouth South with technology in the classroom. · Mr. North's World History CP2 class put together some very creative iMovie trailers on World Religion where each group showcased a different religion from around the World. Students used pictures and videos to tell a story about the religion they were studying. · Mrs. Weston's ELA Honors class has also been working very hard on creating iMovie trailers based on the book The Pearl that they are reading in class. Students had to take the story in the book and make modern connections to today's society and express that through pictures and video to tell a story in iMovie. · Miss Shaver's Psychology class also used iMovie to introduce and teach the class about the part of the brain that they were assigned. Miss Shaver's students were very creative with acting out and explaining the different parts of the brain with video and pictures. · Mr. Colley and his carpentry students have been working on setting up student blogs to keep track of the skills they learn on the job. Students will be blogging about the skills they have learned on the job with pictures taken by them with descriptions of what the skill is showcasing in the picture. · Miss Kennett has also been doing some very exciting things in World Literature where the students are battling for the gold in the Macbeth Olympics! Miss Kennett has recorded the opening ceremonies and has Ustreamed and Tweeted for all to cheer on their favorite team! Patrick Chapin Randlett in the photo above won first place for his "50 Shades of Grey" costume. Plymouth South High students were allowed to come to school in costume on Halloween, October 31st. During lunch, students who wished to participate went up on stage to be voted on by their peers. The creativity and imagination the students showed was amazing! On Thursday, October 25th the 41 students involved in Senior Project held a breakfast as a welcome to their mentors. Mentors and parents were invited to the Orientation Breakfast as a way to thank them for taking time out of their busy schedules to work with our students. Thanks to the community members who have volunteered to mentor our students in their field.
