Cold Spring Elementary School News

In Ms. Wells' Full Day Kindergarten the students have been working hard to show they care about one another by following their classroom rules. When the whole class works together to show they care they can earn hearts for their Kindergarten Cares chart. They can earn hearts for things like being good listeners or helping one another clean up. Once they earn 20 hearts they earn a special celebration. The first celebration was a Pajama Day. The students wore their Pajamas to school and watched the stories Stellaluna and Sophie's Masterpiece on the Smartboard.

SES Super Scientists

Fourth graders in Ms. Ramona Almeida's class are thinking like scientists -- asking questions, making hypotheses, reading, researching and observing to try to answer the many questions posed in their Learning Logs. They are observing the SES school mascot -- the monarch butterfly -- seeing first hand as the larvae go through a complete metamorphosis.

As flu season approaches, students are also getting a glimpse at different germs.

"Using the inquiry method, students wrote down what they knew about germs and made a hypothesis about what they would look like," Ms. Almeida notes. "They then swabbed many surfaces and transported the material onto agar dishes donated from Jordan Hospital."

The science curriculum includes lessons on how to record observations using drawings, labeling and adjectives as they watch the behaviors of the male lobster, rock crab and periwinkles in the classroom's salt-water aquarium.

Second graders in Mrs. Sylvia Bunnell's class are also on a scientific mission. They are viewing different kinds of feathers under a strong magnifying lens, and are learning how to group animals by mammal, birds, reptiles, fish, amphibians, insects, spiders.

"The students are either listing or cutting and drawing pictures of the various groups," Mrs. Bunnell says. "Using the Mighty Monarch butterfly mascot, they also drew the life cycle of butterflies."

Plymouth South Middle School's Mr. Henry Brings Students on a Virtual Field Trip to Africa

There are no McDonalds at the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro, or in Tarakea, Tanzania, for that matter, Plymouth South Middle School teacher Michael Henry told seventh grade students last week. Yet, he said, it was worth the trip.

Mr. Henry met with the seventh grade students to share his adventures in Africa last summer where he taught English, math and PE to students in grades 4 through 8, and where he successfully climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain on the continent.

"It was always on my bucket list," he said, but he also explained to students that it took planning and five months of training to prepare. "There were times when my friends were going out on a Friday night and I made myself stay home and do the Stairmaster," he told them, "but it was worth it."

Henry had planned to go with three other Americans on the trek to the summit, but the other three all dropped out. When he wavered about going alone, it was his sister who convinced him. "I knew in my heart that I would do what it took to make it happen," he said.

The students peppered him with questions about the climb, but they were just as interested in the lives of the children at the school. Mr. Henry told them that the students in Tarakea are just as interested in them, and they agreed that they would begin a letter exchange.

Mr. Henry ended the presentation with a slide listing the three "Lessons Learned" from his experience:

GRATITUDE to know people who could be so happy and love to learn, even without all the electronic gadgets we use.

STRONG WORK ETHIC which can help you to achieve your dreams.

STRONG SENSE OF SELF that comes with putting yourself to the test.

STUDENTS CHAT LIVE DURING PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE

Mr. Murphy's 7th grade students had the opportunity to chat live via Edmodo during the first Presidential Debate. This interactive online tool enabled the students to express their views and discuss the debate as it played out in real time. The students and Mr. Murphy should be commended for utilizing this technology to promote critical thinking and enhance student learning in a relevant manner. Students learn in a variety of ways and this is just one way to stimulate their involvement. We encourage teachers to take advantage of this tool by asking for training. Our Technology Integration Specialist, Mrs. Charlene Conway is offering a session on Monday, October 15, 2012 at 3:00 pm in the IMC for any interested teachers.

Lee Denim Day:  Blue and Pink in the Home of the Green and the Gold

This year Lee Denim Day has dedicated funds to breast cancer research through the American Cancer Society. This week Plymouth South Middle School celebrated Lee Denim Day as a 13th annual event. Donation to this cause began when PSMS opened in 1999. This year, students and staff raised a total of $750.00!

On Friday, October 5th, a celebratory cake was enjoyed in the teachers' lunch room. This attractive and yummy pink-ribboned cake was decorated by PSMS alum and South High Culinary arts student Bryan Whyte. This past Tuesday, October 9th, teachers showed their support as they wore their jeans and crossed their fingers to win raffle prizes donated by wonderful local merchants and more distant friends of Plymouth South Middle School. Please consider supporting our kind and generous donators: The Sparrow House Museum, Daisy Riley's Boutique, Pilgrims' Progress, West Marine, Rejuvenations Salon and Day Spa, Susan Perry Salon, The Market at Pinehills, 42 Degrees North.

We also received a beautiful scarf from Kyle Alexander Wardrobe Consultant of Boston, handmade mittens from Mrs. Mary Jane Calhoun, handmade stationary from Mrs. Carl Arponen, pretzels dipped in pink frosting made by our own Mrs. Pat Scott, and several items just off the Badgly Mischka Fall Fashion Show in New York City from Miss Gigi Guerra. We are so grateful to all of these contributors! While the subject can be difficult and sad, everyone has made this a really happy and celebratory event. Each year more students are entering the raffle, and all are seeing that "good begets good"! Thank you for another successful Lee Denim Day at PSMS.

Marching Band  Last Saturday evening, October 6th, the combined Plymouth North and Plymouth South Marching Band competed in a USBands Marching Band Show at King Phillip High School in Wrentham. After a rain delay of more than an hour, the show became a "stand and play" show. This means that the band did not march, but did all other elements of the performance. Plymouth came in second in Division 3A at this show.
This weekend the Band will be performing in a USBands marching band show in Dartmouth on Saturday evening, October 13th. The band will be performing their 2012 field show, entitled "Waves." This is the closest show to home, so please come out and see what a band show is like!!

Plymouth is on at 7pm, followed by some other excellent marching bands.

It will be a great evening!
Other upcoming Shows:
NESBA Show on Saturday, October 20, 2012 at Reading High School.
NESBA Finals, Saturday, October 27, at Lawrence Veterans Stadium, Lawrence, MA

Plymouth South High School News

On Wednesday, October 10th, Plymouth South High School helped celebrate National Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a "Pink Out".  A high percentage of staff and students wore pink on this day in support.  They were treated to coffee, bagels, apple crisp and cookies in the afternoon.  We held a drawing and for a $5.00 donation to the support the cause,  staff could enter their names to win donated gifts such as: a PSHS jacket & hat or gift certificates to culinary and a badge to wear that said "Wearing Pink in Honor of:______ "  where they could fill in the name of someone they wished to honor or support for the day.  It was a huge success raising just over $500.00 that will all go to support Breast Cancer Research.

In the photo above, the young artists of the "Panthers Cub House" here at Plymouth South High School display a painted pumpkin patch.  The young artists painted with Ms. Quinn's art students to create this beautiful pumpkin patch on hollow core doors.  They enjoyed this special time with their 'big friends'.....

We wanted to rerun this story from last week, this time with Sam Cheung's photo.   On Wednesday, Sam Cheung, last year's Harvard Book Award winner attended the Harvard Book Award Breakfast at the Harvard Club in Boston.  Students from throughout New England were honored at this breakfast.

On Thursday, October 11th at 3:00 the Freshman Academy had a cookout on the Freshman Football/Soccer Fields (the top fields). Our freshman football team played Sandwich while Mr. Loranger and teachers from the Freshman Academy cooked and served during the game.  It was great to see so many students supporting their fellow team and classmates.

PLYMOUTH SOUTH'S ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
The G & G/PSHS Male Athlete of the Week is junior Dylan Oxsen.  A running back on South's Football Team, Oxsen ran for 235 yards on 15 carries, scored 4 touchdowns, and 1 interception in an amazing 31-13 win over Falmouth last week.  Congratulations Dillon!   The G & G/PSHS Female Athlete of the Week is junior Bethany Rogers.  Rogers is a goalie on South's Field Hockey Team.  She posted her third shutout of the season in a 1-0 win over Nauset last week, and she was responsible for eight saves in the game.  Rogers also played well against Falmouth and again made some big saves against a top team.  Congratulations Bethany!

Ms. Conroy's Oceanography students focused their day-long field study on the ecology of one of the Atlantic coast's most valuable bird migratory flyway stop over sites, the Eel River estuary and tidal flats.  Students used a variety of field techniques to survey the organisms and test the water chemistry.  Brian Harrington, a senior scientist from Manomet Center for Conservation Sciences joined us to discuss the critical role Plymouth Beach and estuary play in the bird migration from the Arctic to the tip of South America.  Birds depend on the soft tidal flats abundant food to fatten up for their non-stop flight over the ocean to the shores of Argentina.  This field trip complemented class and lab work, emphasized all of our connection to the ocean ecosystem and our need to protect this valuable ecosystem.

Today at Plymouth South the senior class of 2013 celebrated Octoberfest.  They enjoyed a hypnotist - who convinced the students in the photo above that they were riding on a motorcycle and many other funny antics.  After that they played games such as "Minute to Win it", went outside and had a DJ, a bouncy house, photo booth and were served pizza.  Thanks to all the staff and students who put this together!
