Do You Have a Question for the SSUSC?

We love hearing from our supporters! The fascination many have with even the minutest details of the ship never ceases to amaze us. For instance, a supporter from Brazil recently contacted us to ask whether any expansion joints were used to construct the SS United States

The answer? No! Building the SS United States' superstructure out of lightweight aluminum eliminated the need for expansion joints, which had proved to be a dangerous nuisance on earlier vessels.

Happy Birthday, Lady Liberty!

From one American icon to another -- happy birthday, Lady Liberty! The Statue of Liberty was dedicated on October 28th in 1886, making yesterday her 130th birthday.

The SS United States sailed past the Statue of Liberty many times on her way to and from her berth at Pier 86. We especially love this photo of the two All-American Ladies which highlights both Lady Liberty's glistening torch and the bright funnels of America's Flagship.
SS United States Talk at the Herreshoff Drew Record Crowds

Conservancy Executive Director Susan Gibbs and Advisory Council Member and acclaimed author-illustrator David Macaulay's joint presentation atthe Herreshoff Marine Museum drew record crowds!

Two of the attendees of the sold-out presentation brought remarkable donations that we're delighted to add to our archival collections.

Stephanie Ewen and her sister Deborah Ewen donated a print of painting titled "Moonlight on the North Atlantic" that their father, Theodore C. Ewen, created for Gibbs & Cox. "My sister and I grew up hearing wonderful stories related to our father's work there," Stephanie Ewen said.

Elizabeth Topping Mainiero and her husband Vincent Mainiero also donated a print, one that showed the SS United States pulling out of New York Harbor, as well as a passenger list from 1961, a sea trial booklet, some letters related to the SS United States, several photos taken aboard the SS United States, some information on the Colgate Comedy Hour filmed aboard the ship, and a 1951 copy of Marine News featuring a number of articles about the SS United States

Susan Gibbs and Elizabeth Topping Mainiero pose with the print, part of the collection of objects donated in honor of Elizabeth's father, Captain Solomon Topping.
The Mainieros made the donation in honor of Elizabeth's father, Captain Solomon Topping, who was Marine Superintendent of United States Lines during the construction of the SS United States.

"He worked closely with William Francis Gibbs to ensure that that ship met the necessary requirements from the United States Lines point of view regarding passengers, seamen, and officers," Elizabeth Topping Mainiero recalled.

We always relish the opportunity to learn about the Big U's presence in the lives of so many individuals. Thank you to all who attended the talk, and special thanks to Stephanie and Deborah Ewen, and to Elizabeth Topping Mainiero and Vincent Mainiero! A huge thank you, too, to the Herrshoff for hosting the talk, and thanks in particular to Maia Farish, Conservancy supporter and Herreshoff Board Trustee, and to Herreshoff President and Executive Director William Lynn.
The Big U Makes a Guest Appearance for the Philly Flyers
A still from the 2016-17 Philadelphia Flyers hype video.

The SS United States made a guest appearance in a hype video released by the Philadelphia Flyers prior to their first game of the 2016-17 season, which marks their 50th anniversary in the NHL. According to an NHL press release, the Flyers hoped the video would "capture the city's passion and excitement."

America's Flagship has been a proud Philadelphian for two decades now, and we're delighted that the Flyers choose to include her in their homage to the city. You can watch the video here  -- look for the Big U at 00:30, and again at 1:34!

Former NFL head coach Dick Vermeil addresses viewers about the enduring importance of the SS United States.
This isn't the first time a Philly sports legend has showed love for America's Flagship. In 2012, former Eagles Coach and SS United States fan Dick Vermeil starred in a public service announcement distributed to television stations in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the launch of the SS United States.

Vermeil deems the SS United States to be a true American champion, embodying "all that it meant to be an American at a time when made in the USA meant simply the best."

Then, in 2013, Billie Jean King, Tennis Hall of Fame legend and owner of the Philadelphia Freedoms of Mylan World TeamTennis, pledged her support to our cause and became an honorary member of the Conservancy's Advisory Council.

"The SS United States is a part of the history of this great nation and the more you know about history, the more you know about yourself," King said, when speaking about her commitment to saving the ship. "I hope we can join together in this important initiative and help the SS United States transition into a new and important phase of her life."

No matter what the next phase of the SS United States' life brings, we know her connection to Philadelphia, the city that has been her home since 1996, will remain strong.
Help spread awareness of America's Flagship.
