From Luxury Liner to Troop Transport: The Secret Plan for the SS United States
Courtesy of Lori Ridington.

Although the SS United States was never called into service, a large part of her cost had been subsidized by the U.S. government with the understanding that she could be requisitioned for military purposes if need be. Had she been requisitioned, it would have taken a mere 48 hours to transform her from a luxury liner into a troop ship capable of carrying 15,000 servicemen for 10,000 miles without refueling.

The Pentagon worked with United States Lines to design the SS United States as a "super ship" - part Cold War weapon, part luxury ocean liner. This resulted in the fastest, safest, and most advanced vessel ever created.

In an article for the Asbury Park Press, the docents of the
New Jersey Maritime Museum examine the crucial role ocean liners played as troop transports during World War II, and analyze the specifics of what would have been required to convert the SS United States to a troop ship.
