Next Saturday, July 30th (the same day as the New York Chapter's launch party, but several hours later and about six hundred miles away), we'll be hosting our summer gathering at the North Carolina home of Frank Slate Brooks, advisory council member, Blue Riband Council supporter, and Southeastern Chapter co-chair. We have it on good authority that one of our favorite four-legged friends of the ship, Rex, will be in attendance.
Send your RSVP to info@ssusc.org with "summer gathering" in the subject line. We'll meet you poolside!
Spots for Our Crew Reunion and Celebration Are Filling Fast!
Only a limited number of seats are available on the Spirit of Philadelphia for our Crew Reunion and Celebration on September 17th, and they're being rapidly filled!

Acclaimed PBS Series Examines Why Artists Are Drawn to the SS United States
|
When Luisa Meshekoff and her partner danced a reverent tango on the long-retired ballroom floor of the SS United States for a video segment created by Emmy-Award winning producer Michael O'Reilly, their tribute highlighted the artistry infused into the very bones of the ship. The SS United States doesn't just inspire art, she is art.
O'Reilly and the Friday Arts team delved into the artistic legacy of the ship for a feature "Art and the SS United States" for Philadelphia's PBS station WHYY-TV. When seeking to tell the story of the ship, they found that people care about it with an intensity that's not often sparked by inanimate objects.

The segment masterfully weaves together an interview with the Conservancy's executive director Susan Gibbs, who speaks about the ship as an enduring source of artistic inspiration; superb dance performances by Luisa Meshekoff, whose father, renowned artist Edward Meshekoff, designed some of the artwork that decorated the ship during its heyday; live accompaniment by the gifted Oscuro Quintet, made up of Shinjoo Cho (bandoneon), Joe Kauffman (violin), Bethany Brooks (piano), Matt Engle (bass), and Judson Griffin (solo violin); an interview with maritime historian Steven Ujifusa, author of A Man and his Ship; and remarkable archival footage shot by filmmaker Caroline Savage's father when her family travelled on the SS United States.

The Backstory of This Famous Photo, Revealed...
|
|
|
Leading up to our crew reunion in September, Call Sign KJEH will be featuring stories from people who worked on the ship. This week's transmission came from Alex Keisch, a former cadet, and the subject of a magnificent photo you may have seen before.
While the photo seems to show Keisch hard at work, that's not the case. "The second mate staged it," Keish told us, "so that we could get the stacks in the background. Anyone familiar with the ship would know that I am shooting the sun into the wheelhouse!"
Keisch served on the SS United States for a voyage from New York to Ireland in 1966 -- they set a speed record on that trip, too. When he looks back over the many ships he sailed on (including ten commands of his own!), he says he's still proudest of his time aboard the Big U.
In this week's transmission, Keisch fills us in on the most important element of the weather maps the cadets drew daily (hint: it's red, white, and blue). Click here to access all the Call Sign KJEH transmissions to date.
