Disney Loves the SS United States!
|
If you don't follow us on Facebook, you may have missed this photo of Walt Disney posing on board the SS United States.
The photo was taken during the filming of Bon Voyage!, a 1962 film directed by James Neilson and based on a novel by Joseph and Marrijane Hayes.
The film stars Fred MacMurray, Jane Wyman, Deborah Walley, Tommy Kirk and Kevin Corcoran as the Willard family who sail across the Atlantic on SS United States. The character actor James Millhollin also appears in the film as the ship's librarian. Bon Voyage! was the tenth most popular film of 1962, and grossed $11,000,000.
Thanks, Disney Avenue, for showing your love for the SS United States!

A Once-in-a-Lifetime Chance
|
We're nearing the conclusion of our $50,000 Challenge Grant: we have now raised $46,175 which means we have only $3,825 to go! To encourage supporters to help push us over the finish line, we're offering a special incentive: a tour of the SS United States!
Typically this once-in-a-lifetime experience is only available to members at the "Captain's Quarters" level and above (more information about our membership tiers can be found here), but as a special thank you for participating in this final stretch of our challenge grant campaign, one lucky donor will be be granted special access. We will randomly select one donor who gives $100 or more to receive two spots on a tour of the ship on April 9 or April 23, 2016. Don't miss out on this incredible chance!
Without your generous donations, we would be unable to continue to preserve the SS United States' legacy, sustain the ship for future generations, and build our permanent collections. Every donation is crucial to our ongoing curatorial and educational efforts, and remember, an incredibly generous donor is matching challenge donations dollar for dollar. If you have any questions about this unique opportunity, please feel free to contact us at info@ssusc.org or by phone at 888.488.7787. |
60 Minutes Australia Tours the "Big U"
|
This Sunday, April 3, Channel 9 in Australia will air a segment that features the SS United States as part of a report on the growth of the cruise industry in Australia. For the piece, producer Phil Goyen and reporter Michael Usher from 60 Minutes Australia toured the ship and spoke with Conservancy Executive Director Susan Gibbs about what's in store for America's Flagship and how that relates to the global cruise industry.

As a complement to the 60 Minutes piece, we wanted to share with you this brochure for the "Grand Pacific Cruise," which would have departed on January 21, 1970 and included a stop in Australia, had the ship not been pulled from service in 1969.
Although the cruise never took place, the images from the brochure immortalize that enticing possibility. Those living outside Australia won't be able to watch 60 Minutes' live broadcast, but everyone can follow ongoing updates regarding the story on our Facebook and Twitter pages! |
