An Interview with Blue Riband Donor Richard O'Leary: SS
United States
Navigator
Richard O'Leary, one of the key Blue Riband Council donors who helped save the SS United States from the scrapyard, has a wonderful backstory behind why he has long supported the Conservancy's efforts. His service on the Conservancy's Advisory Council and his generous financial contributions have helped keep America's Flagship afloat, and we are incredibly grateful for his continued support.
Mr. O'Leary studied at Maine Maritime Academy and had the opportunity to study at sea for three months every year. Eventually, Richard was hired as a naval officer for United States Lines. The first time Richard saw the SS United States, he said "it looked like a city in the middle of the night."

Thomas Gaskins, one of our youngest supporters and Jr. Shipster, is "rocking" his new t-shirt featuring the SS United States' funnels and former cadet, Captain Alex Keisch. A huge thank you to Thomas for his continued support! The New York Times shared our enthusiasm and published Thomas's fantastic picture of the SS United States last month. SS United States Continues to Garner Worldwide Media Coverage
Media outlets throughout the nation and overseas reported the news that the Conservancy's SOS sparked a groundswell of support leading to donations totaling over $600,000. As a result, last month the Conservancy's Board of Directors rejected all scrap bids, and redevelopment efforts have gained renewed momentum. We are very grateful for all of the media outlets that have been covering the plight and potential of America's Flagship!
Fox News' story, "Donations Save Iconic American Ship from the Scrapyard", quoted one of the Conservancy's most generous donors: "Letting the SS United States go to the breakers would be like letting the Statue of Liberty be melted down and turned into pennies - Unthinkable."
Roz Liston, editor of the TimesLedger in Queens, New York, wrote about her journey aboard the SS United States. Roz sailed from Southampton, England, to New York, embracing "breathtaking interiors - a magnificent ballroom, expansive staterooms, and inviting bars tucked into corners." She also did something rather surreptitious! Check out her story at The Brooklyn Paper.
The Daily Mail picked up the ship's story from "across the pond": "Donations Save the Iconic SS United States from the Scrapyard" explores the ship's magnificent past through vintage footage and photographs accompanied by historic highlights - a must read!
Rice University Classroom Welcomes SS United States
Undergraduate business students at Rice University in Houston, Texas, were given an exciting assignment this fall: They were charged with planning for the SS United States' redevelopment! Professor Lawrence Hampton, lecturer in Management, selected the SS United States Conservancy as a case study to teach his students about the components of a management consulting proposal. The class laid out a range of future scenarios for America's Flagship, from hotel and event space in Miami, to a stationary, mixed-use property housing tech, retail, and restaurants in New York, to a return to seagoing service.
"I wanted you to know that there is a group of 20-year-olds out there who have become instantly mesmerized by the history and lore of this wondrous ship," said Professor Hampton, who first fell in love with ships in 1964. "I always go back to that instant when I first laid eyes on a picture of the SS United States as the trigger for my unending fascination with oceanliners."
We are all impressed with the insights and creativity demonstrated by Professor Hampton's students, and they have an open invitation to visit the Conservancy if their travels ever take them to Philadelphia!
Help spread awareness of America's Flagship.
