Executive Director's Update

Dear Conservancy Supporters:

As we announced earlier this month, we've never been closer to saving America's Flagship, nor have we ever been closer to losing her. Despite continued progress on the redevelopment front, the ship's ongoing expenses had become unsustainable, and the Conservancy's board was compelled to explore the unthinkable.  However, the sale of the vessel for scrap is by no means inevitable.  We are absolutely determined to do everything possible to save the SS United States.

The SS United States is a big ship, and she needs a big following to survive and thrive.  We have worked hard over the last two weeks to spread the word about her plight and potential.  Beginning with Jesse Pesta's important story in the New York Times, the ship has received national coverage on CBS News and in stories around the nation via the Associated Press, the History Channel, and Yahoo News (AFP).

Redevelopment negotiations in New York have achieved real traction, and the SS United States has achieved strong media coverage in New York, with an editorial in the New York Observer, a story in the New York Daily News, and great print and television coverage by Valarie D'Elia on Time Warner Cable News New York 1.

The story of America's Flagship has gone global, with television and print coverage in dozens of countries and in hundreds of outlets, including ITV and the Daily Mail in the United Kingdom, Der Speigel in Germany, Le Matin (France), and Periodico Digital in Mexico.

And we're not done yet: We expect the SS United States to be featured tonight on NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt and tomorrow on Fox News.

Our October 31 deadline looms large, and we are working around the clock to secure a significant and sustainable revenue stream for America's Flagship and the Conservancy's vital curatorial programs.  We hope you will join us at our "Star-Spangled Fundraiser"  in Philadelphia next week: Read about how this exciting event is taking shape below. We've truly reached an "all hands on deck" moment, and we can't thank you enough for your continued support.

In gratitude,

Get an SS United States replica aluminum key tag!

Duck Suite key tag replicas
SS United States Duck Suite key tag replicas

You've seen them on the Conservancy's Shop page, now get yours before they're gone!

Commissioned by two of the Conservancy's fervent supporters and bearing the room number for the ship's famous Duck Suite, these key tags are exact replicas of the passenger stateroom tags used on the SS United States. Made in the USA to the same exacting standards as the original fobs, these are solid aluminum measuring 3 1/4 inches long (excluding the ring) and 1/8 inch thick, with laser-etched text injected with durable ink.

Due to the popular demand for the key tag of the suite always used by the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, these are no longer available for purchase. However, Carl and Mario are offering the last of the 50 key tags to anyone making a donation of exactly $152.52  between now and October 31st WHILE SUPPLIES LAST.

Make your donation of $152.52 by clicking the PayPal link in the left-hand column of this newsletter, or by visiting our donation page at http://www.ssusc.org/give-and-join/donate/.
